Health, Happiness & Power

A Facebook friend posted this on her timeline.  She indicated that the first three words you will see among those random letters inside the black box will be yours next year.  I was ecstatic and excited because the first three words I found were Health, Happiness and Power.

Now you start looking… (I will highly appreciate if you type in your first 3 words in the comments below)

health, happiness & power

It is indeed amazing!  This exercise is so awesome it creates an upbeat hope to the coming New Year.  Too bad though, it has been four hours already and still I have yet to locate the three ultimate words that I wish to find.  The words, “Extremely Delicious Body”.

But seriously, I’m definitely looking forward to a healthy, happy and powerful year ahead!

Cool Cello Sound: Start A War Cover By Dom La Nena

Aside from learning how to ride a bicycle, my other childhood frustration was learning to play a musical instrument.  If I be given a choice the two musical instruments that I would love to learn would be the piano and the cello.

Though it’s impossible to carry around, I chose the piano, because of its versatility.  For me it’s the all around instrument.  There have been a lot of magnificent songs and great musical masterpieces that were composed using the piano.

On the other hand, I chose the cello not for anything else but its aesthetics.  Since I am more of a visual person, I like the cello because it looks so classy and sophisticated.  However, I actually have yet to know a hit song or music that originated from exclusively using the sound of the cello.

If I know how to play the cello, I would definitely be playing this song…

Kick Cancer’s Ass

Cancer (not the horoscope but the ailment) in which ever form, type, category or origin it is has gained the reputation of being a deadly and dreaded disease.  It has claimed a considerable percentage of the human population.  This disease is so deadly, it does not only attack the physical being, it also plagues the human emotion as well as drain a family’s bank account.  Cancer nowadays is so prevalent everybody seem to know someone who had or have it.

Because of this, people in groups – may it be a foundation, an organization or a company – has come up with noble and novel ideas on how to help those affected.  Case in point are the two ongoing projects situated at two ends of the planet.  Their strategies may vary but their aim is the same.  To kick cancer’s ass.

One is located in Manila, particularly the LJC Restaurants’ ‘Good to Dine’ promo.  It is a strategy that lets you donate to the needy yet at the same time let you enjoy a penchant palatal experience.  It is because for every ordered special dish included in the campaign, the patron gets to donate ten (10) pesos of his payment to the Philippine General Hospital’s Cancer Institute.

The campaign will run until the end of the year (2014) and the accumulated fund will be used to finance treatments of cancer patients.  So when you plan to dine in a restaurant, might as well settle for these restaurants and order for these items…

The other is located in New York.  That is Hoda Kotb’s (host of The Today Show) direct-to-the-point fundraising and donation campaign. Usually quirky Hoda and her group tickle viewers’ sentiments and emotion by letting them watch and listen to a beautiful mashed up songs of two of pop superstars Sara Bareilles’ ‘Brave‘ and Cindy Lauper’s ‘True Colors‘.

Indeed, the song and the music video touches the heart.  It will make you realize that you haven’t seen what a true character of ‘brave’ is until you’ve seen kids kick cancer’s ass.

All proceeds of Hoda’s campaign will go to grants for pediatric cancer research via the American Cancer Society.  Click HERE if you wish to donate.

Lighting Candles

Not regularly going to church to attend the Holy Mass is something that I am not definitely proud of.  But aside from dipping my index and middle finger in a bowl of Holy Water upon entry and exit, the other thing I love doing when inside a Catholic Church is lighting up candles.

candles i lit in baclaran church in the middle of the night

That is why every time I have the sweet opportunity to light candles inside a church, I always light five of it.  One for me, one for Nengkoy and Joe, one for my beautiful family, another for my friends and colleagues while the last one is for the one whom I have patiently been waiting for.

For me, lighting up candles is like toting up an interactive medium towards one’s prayer.  One does not simply say a prayer instead such request, petition, gratitude, supplication or wish are conveyed to the heavens with a cool and funky symbolism.

Whipped By A One-Eyed Monster

One of the luxuries which I would really like to do is travel.  It simply brings a different level of joy and happiness.  The experience is definitely an intangible that no one can rob or steal away from you.   That is why when I saw this video via Stumbleupon.com, it felt like my body was being smashed and my spirit was being whipped by a one-eyed monster called ‘envy’.

How I wish I have the loads of opportunity and the luxury of time to do all those stuff that this guy has done and experienced. I’m pretty sure his soul is so full to the brim.

And since travelling entails plump amount of dough, as a retaliation to this one-eyed monster, I simply settled with the thought that ‘if the grass is greener at the other side of the fence, you can bet their water bill is higher’

Goto on Father’s Day

yum yum!

yum yum!

Some would sneak out of the bedroom to have a bar of chocolate or a decent pint of ice cream.  Others would have a bag of cookies or even prepare themselves a hearty sandwich.  These are some of the common food chows people eat if they would have a midnight snack.

I never have cravings for a midnight snack, and if I would have one, I would go for a super bowl of “goto”.  I don’t know the English word for goto.  But it’s a hot rice porridge with meat innards (usually ox tripe and intestines) topped with chopped leeks, toasted garlic and a squeeze of the ever versatile calamansi fruit.

Psychology reveals that patterns for adult food choices is based on childhood influences, socio-economic life course and obviously the physiological state of hunger.  I believe on all these three factors.  But my choosing goto as a midnight snack is based on the first.  My childhood influence.  This is basically because of my father.

happy father's day tatay!

a true dad knows how to and not ashamed to do the laundry… happy father’s day tatay!

During my days living in Pasay, my father religiously fetched Nengkoy from work when she would render overtime reaching until the wee hours of night.  Before my parents would head home, they would drop by a goto store to purchase this superb rice soup.

And when they would arrive home, both would wake up all of us (their children, including the maid) so as to enjoy the tasty goto.  Heavy-eyed, lethargic and drowsy, I would slurp a mouthful which would definitely wake me up.  This has become a very long habit of my family in Pasay until my father has gone sick and Nengkoy retired from work.

Now that I am an adult, has lived independently from my family and my father has gone to heaven, today’s Father’s Day I guess would be so nice to have a midnight snack.  Definitely, that would be some big bowl of hot delicious goto.

Happy Father’s Day to everyone…

Lawiswis Kawayan at Sagano Bamboo Forest

Since Japan has such an excellent train and subway system, it is always such a breeze to go around. That is why while staying in Osaka, I and my family decided to go to nearby Kyoto for a third visit.

Many bloggers and world travel enthusiasts voted this place as one of the fifty places that a person should go to before dying.  I could not agree more!  I am actually honored and humbled and slightly freaked out when I was given this beautiful opportunity to be in such a breathtaking place.

The Sagano Bamboo Forest in Arashimaya, Kyoto is one breathtaking spot in this planet.  A sense of serene tranquility permeates from this lush bamboo scenery.   While traversing the narrow path, it felt like Mother Nature was giving my whole delicious body a warm comfortable hug.

The enchanting sound of the bamboos swaying back and forth against the light wind is something to behold.  It was like listening to an angel singing while feeding someone else’s soul. I was not surprised to know that as per amazingplaceonearth.com, this enchanting music-like-resonance is a must-be-preserved sound in Japan as declared by the Japanese government.

It was such a wonder to behold!

Chasing the Hollywood Sign

I guess a first time tourist in Los Angeles would only consider his visit complete if he has the most sought-after photo of the world famous Hollywood Sign as his background. When in L.A., I believe there is no more desired photo than that!

I and my super friends stayed in Los Angeles for more than a week.  We actually stayed in an apartment along Bronson Avenue (booked via AirBnB) in which there is a good sight of the Sign.  Every day when we would get out of the apartment to proceed to our agreed sightseeing expedition, super friend Denton, our appointed driver (because he’s the only one who got the license among us), would point out especially to me – being the L.A. first timer – that the Sign is incredibly visible. He always suggests that I might as well take the opportunity to take the coveted photo while it’s near and massive.

His loving wife Karen however raised that a good site where I can be taken of a good souvenir photo with the Sign as my background would be at the Griffith Observatory located atop a mountain.  She expressed that it’s known to be one of the best sites for the-Sign-photo-opp and that we would have one afternoon to do the Griffith Observatory.

The day we decided to go to the Griffith Observatory was also our “cultural day”, the day of our visit to the J. Paul Getty Museum.  The Getty was actually quite a far ride from our place of stay and touring even a portion of the vast museum campus took us some time.  That is why when we were driving up the mountain leading to the Griffith Observatory the sun is already starting to bid goodbye for the day.

What is so wicked that day is that there were a lot of (most probably) tourists driving up to the Griffith Observatory.  That is when we realized that I might not be able to get my photo taken with the Sign because it’s super traffic and it’s starting to get dark.  What added to the devious circumstance is that security officers on the road are diverting motorists so as not to enter and proceed to the parkland of the observatory since parking slots atop are already full.  That was the time Denton without delay told us that we might as well alight the car and should rather walk up fast the road going to the observatory so that I can be taken with the photo while the sun is still up.

Though it was rather cold, that was the moment that I, Karen and Joesel rushed ourselves up on our feet to the Observatory.  Going up the road felt like we were in a race chasing for an available beaming sunlight on top of Mount Hollywood.

When we reached the courtyard of the Griffith Observatory, pumped up and still trying to catch our breath Karen instantly determined the spot where I could be taken a photo.  I immediately handed Joesel my phone-camera and flashed my natural sweet smile.  With instantaneous focusing, Joesel straightaway clicked on the phone-camera.  Here is what I got…

The following morning, my super friends along with me walking on the street after some hearty breakfast metamorphosed into some fairy god and goddesses.  They simply granted my wish or the wish of any other first-time L.A. tourist.  Noticing a clearer view of the Sign as seen from afar, they stopped.  They told me that I might as well be taken a photo with the Hollywood sign as my background right at that very moment.  Here is what I got…

Change For The Better

It’s January 1, the day considered to be the first page of this year’s first chapter.  A fresh new year could mean a fresh new start to a lot of us.  May it be a healthier new you, a more mature disposition, saving lots of money or a total make over for an amiable personality, changing for the better has always been a good preliminary and starting point for a day like this.

Change for the BetterAn effective change for the better will not take just a day, it would I guess be more effective if it be done one day at a time.  Little by little.  Can you just imagine what we would be at the end of the year if in each day of it there are some positive changes in us?  That would be 365 little changes and improvements that we could have.

I have to have these changes because I feel that I owe my own life the very best that I could personally offer.  Also, I believe that these changes can eventually lead to positive prospects and possibilities.  I don’t intend to be a perfect person since that would literally be impossible.  But looking at each day as a new chance at being the best that I could possibly can would be my ultimate agenda.

May it be about the changes in my body, improvements in my pocket, enhancement in my personality, progress of my brain or the upgrading and rebooting of my soul, “Change for the Better” would be my 2014 aspiration, target and intention.
