Fenesta Ca Lucive: A Touching Lullaby

Have you ever been introduced to a poignant and beautiful lullaby while reading a novel?  And have you ever tried searching and listening to that music inscribed in such book?  I was and I did.

Thanks to young Elio, the main character in the book Call Me By Your Name, for he introduced me to Fenesta Ca Lucive, an old, sad and touching Neapolitan song.  As soon as I finished reading the pages where Fenesta Ca Lucive was penned, I dropped the book and took my Ipad.  I searched the song and this is what it was…

Chiagneva sempe ca durmeva sola
Mo dorme co’ li muorte accompagnata
She always wept because she slept alone,
Now she sleeps among the dead

While listening to this beautiful lullaby, I took the book and re-read the portion where it was portrayed.  The music gave a different sensation.  It suddenly gave the novel I was reading a brighter color.  Though, I don’t understand a single word of the song, the music is so haunting, it felt like I was in the streets of Rome witnessing the tenderness, passion and the imminent despair of the main character.

Take On Me Acoustic Version

I was a little upset when two Facebook friends posted the viral video of A-ha singing a new and acoustic version of Take On Me during their recent gig on MTV Unplugged.  Both FB friends by the way (though they don’t know each other) are like me.  Both were teenagers and grew up in the ‘80s.

I was a little upset because for me an excellent song that has turned into a classic, Take On Me, must never be moved.  As the saying goes, don’t fix it if ain’t broke.  And since I have the twisted tendency of letting myself indulge into my being a distressed, I tried watching the video.

But to my surprise, I actually loved the rebooted form of the song.  Take On Me in its acoustic version seem to have been stripped naked and the genuine beautiful colors of the song has been exposed.  The song suddenly became more sincere and the exquisiteness of the lyrics embedded beneath the upbeat electronic synthesizers seem to have finally been uncovered.

I have never been so moved the way I am now moved by the acoustic form of A-Ha’s Take On Me.  Only now was I able to digest and appreciate the beauty of the song’s lyrics.  If the original version goes with the saying don’t fix it if ain’t broke, the acoustic version lives by the saying perfect is the enemy of good.

The new version does not just deserve to be shared only by two of my Facebook friends it is worthy of being imparted and listened to by all folks which ever era that they may have been born.

A Last-Minute Villa Escudero Visit

According to Kurt Vonnegut, “bizarre travel plans are dancing lessons from God”.

villa escudero.

This is exactly what I, JB and MJ underwent.  We initially planned and agreed to go hiking on a mountain and a nature reserve east of Metro Manila.  But when all plans has been ironed out and only a couple of days left prior to leaving, we suddenly changed our mind.  We simply agreed to scratch the plan and instead proceed at the heavenly Villa Escudero, some 2 hours travel south of Metro Manila.

And unlike the previous 2-hour travel adventures that we had in the past in which we would either rent a private van or drive our own car, we used the public transport.  We simply commuted from Manila to Quezon via passenger bus and the ever reliable tricycle.  One bizarre mode of travel for us yet surprisingly comfortable!

I am glad to have changed our plans.  Villa Escudero has remained an amazing Filipino destination!  In summary, this is how fun we had in this beautiful place…

you can never go wrong with this beautiful philippine destination

Kapag biglaan talaga… Natutuloy!!

Wow Morisette!

The Filipino translation for the word “beast” is halimaw.  And halimaw is how I would describe the strength, depth and power of the singing voice of Morisette Amon during her participation in the recent Asian Song Festival held somewhere in South Korea.

This kind of a Filipina beast simply slayed it!  This was such a phenomenal performance.  Her pure talent is out of this world! And she looks absolutely gorgeous in that video!

What is so surprising with this number is that I was less impressed by her whistling capability.  Maybe it’s because a number of good singers can do the whistle.  I was more impressed and surprised by the unique squeaking sound that her voice makes.  That is so rare and exclusively Morisette.  That squeak would most probably be the most beautiful squeaking sound that I’ve ever heard.

Fun Queer Kids & the Leader of Chechen Republic

The Pride Month is over yet rainbow flags will never be folded and kept inside treasure trunks of the LGBT community.  The waving of these colorful flags will continue to signify the unremitting fight for rights and equality.

This is of course except for the Chechen Republic which is the worst place to live for the members of the LGBT community.  In that part of the globe, rainbow flags are kept in the innermost trunks and queer thoughts will forever be suppressed in the deepest annals of their soul.

mr. razman kadyrov

Last weekend, I happen to bumped into an old YouTube video.  After watching this fun and funny video, I wonder what the leader of Chechen Republic would feel after viewing it.  Will he be beaming with smile and even laugh while watching such an innocent and harmless kids who happen to be gay? Or will he get so furious he will order his military troupes to fly nuclear missiles to the Philippines so as to eradicate these naïve and blameless kiddos?  And if these kids were living in Chechnya, would he order that these happy minors be abducted and held captive in a gay concentration camps?

Aside from wondering what the Chechen Republic leader would feel, I am curious how the “free” kids of Chechnya enjoy being kids. Are they as unregimented and as diverse like the kids here in my country?  Are they able to strut spontaneous moves the way kids here strut their stuff?

With all these incomprehensible questions, all I could think of is being glad that these kids are happy living in a free country like the Philippines! These cute kids may not be rich and powerful but they sashay away with happiness…

Cutest Kid In The Solar System

I can no longer count the number of times I clicked the symbol in Instagram account of mikeybot.  It is because this account features the cutest kid in the solar system!  And every time my mobile phone is notified about a new YouTube video on HiHo Kids channel, I would get so excited hoping Ernie would be part of the new feature.

From among the cute HiHo Kids channels, here’s my personal favorite video of Ernie.  It’s unadulterated-ly cute, funny and heart-melting…

Watching the infectious smile, the wondrous cackle, the playful tease and even the frivolous nose picking of Ernie makes me miss the feelings on what it is to be a simple happy kid.  I guess I will never get tired clicking the  symbol in mikeybot’s Instagram page.

For Forever by Ben Platt

The songs and music of Dear Evan Hansen (the musical) is giving me reasons to want to fly and spend another beautiful adventure in the city of New York.  And while I try to find a window on y very busy schedules on the possibility of flying to NYC, I let myself be satisfied on playing and replaying the musical’s soundtracks in my Spotify account.

And when I saw this performance in The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, it further my wanting to fly to NYC.  This I guess is the best performance that this song can possibly be sang!  From the faultless singing to infectious involuntary facial twitches and from the impeccable lyrics to the seamless exhibited raw emotion, his rendition in this video can simply be spelled as P-E-R-F-E-C-T!

I will really be upset in case Ben Platt, nominated for Best Actor in a Musical, will not be awarded the Tony this year!

Kaiyak… Perpek!
