Rizal’s Mona Lisa Smile

Today is Rizal Day.  Let me then post my personal favorite among the numerous photos of the ultimate Pinoy henyo and hero, Jose Rizal.

This is one unusual photo of Rizal which bears his Mona Lisa smile.  It is unlike the usual photo of Rizal which is mostly serious, tensed, unsmiling and oftentimes nondescript.  In this photo he looks happy and seems to have done something naughty.  I specially adore the hoity-toity vibe on his pretty face in this photo.  He looks cool and definitely hip!

what's on his mind...?

what’s on his mind…?

Another remarkable about this photo is that you can actually generate and formulate various thoughts and ideas (similar to the Mona Lisa) on what is on his mind while the shot is being carried out.  It’s a simple yet mysterious smile that can conceive millions of interpretations.

Best YouTube Video Reaction On This Year’s Ms. Universe Pageant

YouTube again is now flooded with clips that demonstrates Filipinos euphoric reaction while watching the Ms. Universe pageant.  Common in all these jubilant and ecstatic emotional bursts is especially evident when Ms. Philippines is announced as part of the cut of top 16, top 10 or top 5.

This serves to confirm that beauty pageants no matter what it brings to the country’s economic or cultural growth is a big deal in this part of the globe.  In the Philippines, Ms. Universe pageant can be equated as the Superbowl of America, the Mardi Gras of Brazil, the crowning of a monarch in Great Britain or the TV appearance of Kim Jong-un in North Korea.

People around the world would again wonder how come it takes some time before it is uploaded on YouTube.  The answer is simple, the Philippines has to slowest internet web loading in the planet.

These usually funny video clips loaded on YouTube is now a staple in the Philippines since the country’s representatives for the past 3 years has landed on the top 5 of the pageant.

But for this year’s version of video clips some were not the usual rapturous reaction but nevertheless remains hilarious.  This is especially true when on the final spot of the competition, the Filipina beauty whom everybody expected to win because of a grand performance during the night and supposedly sealing the crown on her head with a very intelligent answer was not announced the winner.

For me this year’s epic funny video comes from these two hopeful yet surprised earthlings (uploaded by Alma Gloriana) who evidently are not living in the Philippines (the Philippines have yet to have a winter season).  Look at how this two drop their jaws on a very simultaneous manner.  It’s an epic of a clip!

“Uhhhg!” Hahaha! Napa-NGA-NGA si Ate’t Kuya!

Ate Gay: From Basilica to SM Arena

super funny ate gay

super funny ate gay

The first comedy bar that I have been to was more than 2 decades ago.  It was in (the now defunct) Basilica, an old house turned into a comedy bar located in Malate.  I can clearly recall that one of the night’s hosts during that time was Ate Gay who was wearing Darna costume introducing herself as the Nora Aunor’s version of Darna (though Nora never was a Darna character).

Ate Gay (Gil Morales in real life) was a total riot during that night.  He sings, acts and speaks sounding truly like Nora Aunor. He sang Laura Branigan’s upbeat “Name Game” song in a slow ballad-ic way ala Nora Aunor style. I and my friends so enjoyed that night, it paved the way for us to often visit comedy bars which starts to flourish within the Malate area during that era.

But last night, after more than 2 decades, Ate Gay has moved to a much bigger venue.  I guess ten thousand times bigger than Basilica.  He packed the humongous SM Arena!  And as anticipated, Ate Gay’s repertoires continue to be riotously hilarious.  The gut-busting short film at the start of the show and when she entered the stage harnessed across the end of the venue, I knew the concert would be a blast.

His adorable Darna monologue is still there and it remains exceptionally humorous.  His skill at mixing up various tunes and lyrics received hysterical uproars from the audience.  He is one great genius on extemporaneous mash-ups.  His incomparable declamation entitled “The Door” was also featured which when delivered by others would for sure not be as funny as that of Ate Gay.  Of course, his camp impersonation of Philippine showbiz icon, Nora Aunor, has always been a side-splitting classic.

What I like most about Ate Gay is that he does not need to mock and deride other people to make people laugh.  He actually ridicules himself (his wardrobe, his looks, his voice, his English and even his mole) to elicit laughter from the audience.  He is unassuming, self-effacing and was never “boastful”.  Being able to laugh at one self without conceit and pretensions makes Ate Gay an excellent comedian.

Grabe ang sakit sa panga sa katatawa!

Penshoppe Had A Jackpot With Zac

zac efron

There have been a considerable number of A-List Hollywood celebrities who has been commissioned to endorse and be an image model of a Filipino branded clothing line.  This marketing approach in away establishes Filipino-made apparel in the global fashion trend.

Nicole Scherzinger of Pussy Cat Dolls, Bruno Mars, Joe Jonas and Chris Hemsworth has done it for Bench.  Ed Westwick, Ian Somerhalder and Leight Meester has been commissioned by Penshoppe.  Beautiful and talented international superstars Alicia Silverstone and Natalie Portman were featured by Kamiseta.

But among the most flourishing and effectual among this approach was the one recently carried out by Penshoppe.  Zac Efron.  His Penshoppe endorsement which resulted to his visiting the country created such big fuzz.  His visit caught the attention of all media mediums both local and international.

Penshoppe had a jackpot for choosing with Zac!  I wonder what Bench – Penshoppe’s stiffest competitor is gonna do.  Will Bench bring back Steven Seagal to the Philippines who happen to have endorsed Tanduay Rum in the past?  Hahaha! It’s your move Ben Chan.

I guess the reason behind this is because Zac has been so sincere and genuine in expressing his long-time desire to come over to the Philippines to experience the place, the people and the culture.  Thanks to his dad who had colorful stories and experiences about the country in the past (when Zac was still growing up and was still a non-showbiz personality).

Zac was so effective in kindling the interest about the Philippines he even discussed his short yet notable stay and experience here during his guestings at Ellen and  Jimmy Kimmel Shows.  He was so encouraging, I myself wanted to go the Philippines even though I am already living here.

Panalo ang Penshap sa’yo Zac!

A book usually contains photos of famous landmarks, historical events and noteworthy human beings.  That is why I’m so proud to announce that for the first time ever, a photo of my face has been included in a very good and remarkable book.

Larry Can’t Cook is a collection of essays, vignettes and notable episodes about the colorful life of the late restaurant czar of the Philippines, Mr. Larry J. Cruz.  The book also contains recipes of popular Filipino dishes served in the restaurants of Mr. Cruz.  It is published by Anvil and is now available at National Bookstore and Powerbooks.

Sarah G is such a Turn-Off

geronimo & anderson

Entertainment TV host Ogie Diaz and the rest of Pinoy showbiz-landia attributes actor/celebrity Gerald Anderson’s surrender of pursuing actress/singer/superstar Sarah Geronimo to be his girlfriend to the latter’s wicked mother. Considering that Anderson is one of the most eligible bachelors of this country, only stupid ladies, I guess would say NO to him. Even devoted caring mothers would pray to the heavens that their daughter be the girlfriend of this gentleman.

Though Anderson’s acting skills can be compared to a guy suffering from indigestion, Gerald is famous, single, childless, young, handsome and filthy rich.  A lot of people would agree with me – and I apologize to the multitudes of Sarah fanatics – that he is even more beautiful than Sarah Geronimo.  He could therefore be considered “one rare find”.

I just hope Sarah Geronimo (who at 24 years old has yet to develop her inner backbone) would not end up marrying an old, adulterous, ugly and atrocious beer-bellied worthless bum in the future.  Her inability to stand up for what she wants and how she feels as well as her allowing to be controlled by people whom she actually feeds is just absurd.  She for me in this case is a whopping turn-off.

Madonna’s Masterpiece

A couple of days from now, all earthlings will get to enjoy and listen to Give Me All Your Love, the title of the soon to be released first single of my favorite artist Madonna.  This dancey song’s release-highlight will be the much anticipated ala-Cirque-Du-Soleil Madonna’s performance at the Super Bowl Halftime show slated early next month.  Too bad Super Bowl is not gonna be held in this “more fun” assuming country.

But before everyone start dancing to this soon to be released single that will mark the start of this year’s worldwide invasion of The Queen, let us first listen and fell in love to the gorgeous song of Madonna entitled Masterpiece.  It’s so gorgeous it is nominated (and amply predicted to win) for Best Original Song in the 2012 Golden Globe Awards.

I actually have yet to hear this song being played on local radio.  This splendid ballad was never officially released but was instead used as one of the official soundtracks of the movie W.E. which Madonna herself directed. Give a spin to Madonna’s “Masterpiece” …

In Between Slam Book and Facebook

After the advent and fame of Slam Book, a notebook bearing questions to be filled out by the keeper’s selected friends that is later to be passed around for other invited contributors to write down their respective intimate answers.  And before the genesis of Slam Book’s virtually formatted type – i.e. social networking sites like Friendster, Multiply and Facebook – a conspicuous hype came into being in the pop culture of young Filipinos in the late ‘80s until early ‘90s.  A lot of people think that after Slam Book has depleted its popularity among the youth it was right away replaced by the web-based social networking sites.  Let me insert, inject and connect what transpired in between these two Herculean cultural revolutions.

What happened in between was the young populace’s visit to a photo studio.  During those years, if my memory serves me right, the most popular photo studio for the youth in Pasay and its nearby cities was “Dimension or Dimensione”.  Young people would schedule an afternoon wearing their most bewitching casual attire, sit on a high chair with a background or lighting of his or her choice and flash their sweetest smile in front of a camera.

The picture is not a group photo but a personal/individual close-up that is ordered to be printed on a wallet size photo-paper in abundant number of reproductions. When the photo in immense copies are already picked-up from the studio, he or she will then write a sweet dedication at the back which will be later given away and distributed to his or her friends and classmates.

Recipients then will collect all these photos and bundle it as part of their cherished possessions.  During those times they will not insert it inside a photo album since they enjoy reading the dedications written at the back from time to time.  They would not leave the thick collected close-ups in their respective houses but to be bizarrely brought along with them wherever they go.  The thickness of their photo collection would signify the degree of their social friendliness and congeniality.

Here are 2 of the amazing samples of my collection which up until now is in my possession…

Sikatchupoy

translation: Its okay not to be famous at least my prominence won't corrode!

Stardom is defined as a status of an individual acknowledged as a star.  One gospel truth is that everybody aspires to be sikat (popular) and be a star.  It is synonymous to fame and fortune!.  Due to life’s surprises and enigmatic circumstances people just suddenly find themselves in the status of stardom.  It could be in-born, a fascinating fate and destiny or simply caused by melodramatic blood, sweat and tears.

I envy those ungifted and undeservinng stars who did nothing but suddenly found themselves filthy rich and fiercely famous (the likes of Kim Kardashian, Zanjoe Marudo, Willie Revillame, Gerard Anderson and Kate Gosselin to name a few).  Some have not yet even finished their studies but owns heaps of money and monstrous properties.  The only factor why they ended up being wickedly famous is because of their so called x-factor – the unexplainable element that enables these individuals to portray kick-in-the-butt social and cultural values in the lives of others.  They are the existing testament of “life being unfair”.

Saan ba makakabili ng letcheng x-factor na yan?! Bibili ako ng lima. Grrr!
