Shut Up! That’s How Nengkoy Loves Me!

nengkoy & me at rustic morningsMy mother loves me.  Case in point is what just has happened.

I was too lazy to answer my phone.  But after ringing like a million times, I knew that it’s my mother who’s calling.  She’s the only one whom I know who has the patience and tolerance to wait that much amount of time of allowing numerous ringing of a telephone before finally giving up.  But this time, I was starting to feel a headache out from the unstoppable ringing, I did not have the choice but to answer it.

And when I answer “hello”, Nengkoy’s first utterance over the phone was a question of what time will I be going to her house.  I did not answer her question but instead greeted her warmly by saying “Happy Mother’s Day!”  She answered back by saying an annoyed and sarcastic “Tse!” (English translation: Shut Up!)

She started telling me stories over the phone, who were already in her house at that moment and what food she has prepared.  We concluded our conversation by assuring her that I will be in her house later in the afternoon.   That’s how Nengkoy loves me!

Happy Mother’s Day Nengkoy!

Diwata Made Me Smile

Last night, to ease down my post holiday blues, which I think was caused by an awe-inspiring trip to Israel, I opted to switch on my Spotify and searched for a Filipino-Tagalog song.  I supposed a local-flavored tune would in some way ease my sudden drop of mind-set from a consistently exhilarating euphoria during my trip to significantly low levels of despondency upon my return.

While trying to search for some upbeat happy Tagalog tune which would hopefully try to bring me back to my senses, I happen to bump into a very charming and engaging song.  The song is entitled Diwata sung by Chito Miranda (lead singer of Parokya Ni Edgar band) and sizeable portions of the song was rapped by Abra. diwata by abra

I don’t remember when the last time I wrote or reviewed a Tagalog song.  But Diwata (English translation: Fairy) is totally something fresh and easy to the ear.  The message is not too sweet neither too tragic.   The lyrics may be profound and arduous yet the tune and jingle is adoringly unfussy and uncomplicated.

Diwata did not only make me smile.  It actually made me want to listen to it again and write about it!

The Rare Remarkability of Old Jaffa

zodiac sign fountain inside old jaffa square

Old Jaffa is a very old port town situated in the south of Tel Aviv.  It is believed that this town was built by the son of Noah (Japheth) after the great flood.  Thus, this town is considered one of the oldest inhabited towns on the planet.

With the more than 3,000 years old history of this town, there is so much to see, hear, feel and smell in Old Jaffa.  This place is actually my most photographed place in my recent trip to Israel with my sister.  That is why this old town would definitely be one place in Israel that I will be back in case I will again be blessed to visit Israel.

Walking through the narrow streets and alleyways of Old Jaffa, it is very evident that the place is now a haven for artists and craftsmen.  The artistry of the people who presently inhabits the place are truly mind-blowing!

With the rich and remarkable history of Old Jaffa, there is indeed so much to write about this ancient place.  Yet, I could not seem to focus on what to say and write about this beautiful town.  I guess I was too mesmerized by the special remarkability, rich exceptionality and the rareness of the magic of Old Jaffa.

The Saddest Eyes of Eli Lieb

the heart-pricking stare of eli lieb

the heart-pricking stare of eli lieb

This is the very heartbreak ballad that I don’t want to sing ever!  But since the exhibited emotions of the singer (Eli Lieb that is) is so raw, this video then deserves to be in my blog.

Those eyes are the saddest.  You can actually see and feel that this guy is going through with something.  Try to notice his subtle sigh at the end of the video.  It happened in a split a second yet you can actually feel the intensity of sadness and sorrow when he blew air out from his mouth.  Such a glum and doleful moment.

I have seen a number of videos of Eli Lieb in the past but I haven’t seen how sad his eyes looks like like the way this beautiful video did.  If indeed his going through with something, I hope him well…

Overwhelmed & Wordless for the River Jordan & the Sea of Galilee

Two connected bodies of water that the Lord Jesus Christ has a significant involvement with when he was physically on earth are the Sea of Galilee (which is actually a lake) and the River of Jordan.  I have been so blessed and fortunate enough to actually have seen, felt and experience these two sanctified bodies of water.

I must have done something beautiful in my past that I was so blessed with the opportunity to be in these divine places.  And since I am so overwhelmed and bowled over with this blessing and could not seem to describe in words how I actually felt, let me just post a number of photos during this divine trip and experience.

Xoho Café: A Funky Treasure in Tel Aviv

One of the many beauties of travelling in a foreign land without a set and pre-arranged tour package is that you got to explore and discover treasures of the city that you visit.

Case in point was the first breakfast me and my sister had here in Tel Aviv.  Armed only with a google map, a dash of courage and heaps of appetite, we walked through the city streets of Tel Aviv to get to Xoho Café, the ranked number one recommended breakfast café in Tel Aviv by Tripadvisor.

Discovering Xoho Café was a bliss.  As soon as we entered the café we were barged with a laid back yet cool and hip ambiance and deco. And from the funky interiors itself, it looks like the owner is someone who is so young, vibrant and creative I stopped wondering why this establishment was ranked number one by Tripadvisor.

My beautiful first impression of Xoho Café was even substantiated by the divine dishes that me and my sister ordered.  When I asked the young server what to recommend, she simply stated that the Juanito Burrito was something not to miss in their café.  My sister on the other hand settled for the delectable Sunny Side Up served with a bunch of toast, labaneh, olive oil and zaatar.  The food was fantastic!

Upon stepping out of Xoho Café with the smile on my face, I can simply say that this café is a perfect combination of good food and funky design.  Thank goodness to Tripadvisor, google map and our heaps of appetite, we discovered a treasure called Xoho Café.

The Rustic Mornings in Marikina

During my childhood, my perception of Marikina is that of a faraway place from metropolitan Manila.  One of our neighbors in Pasay, Tita Linda and her family, were actually from this bucolic county.  And every time our family is invited by Tita Linda (one Nengkoy’s ‘mejor amiga’) to go to their place in Marikina for some party or gathering, the travel and journey seem so arduous and tiring.  I can still remember the exhausting hours it took for us to reach this green and tree-filled but faraway suburb.

During adulthood, the only time I got to Marikina (now a city and part of metropolitan Manila) was after the deadly flooding and wreckage brought about by the most devastating storm to hit Metro Manila known as tropical storm Ondoy in 2009.  I got the chance to go to Marikina then because the company I am working for did some charitable activity.  Our company prepared and distributed away hundreds of boxes of hot cooked food to the affected residents of Marikina, which was the most hardly hit area of that year’s deadly typhoon.  That memory was not a good one because Marikina that time was all mud, sludge and debris.

But just last Wednesday, I had a beautiful morning in rustic Marikina.  I was actually at awe because my childhood perception that it takes ages to get there has been erased.  It only took us 45 minutes to get there (from Malate in Manila).   And the ugly clutter brought about by the deadly Ondoy of course are all gone.  What’s present is a highly urbanized zone with remarkably clean roads and civilized communities.

The reason this time why I was able to get to Marikina is because of breakfast.  I and my colleagues decided to have breakfast at Rustic Mornings.

This restaurant can be considered one precious gem of Marikina.  The ambience is one-of-a-kind.  It makes you feel like you are not in crazy, hectic and stressful metropolitan Manila.  Once you entered their gate you’ll feel a sudden change in impression.  It’s quiet, calm and relaxed.  The restaurant is actually decorated with beautiful pieces of art and décor.  You would actually feel like being in a vicinity full of stunning and charming clutter.

But what is most important for me that morning was the food.  Rustic Mornings serve heartwarming and mouthwatering breakfast dishes in a suburban-like setting.  And from among the breakfast dishes that we ordered, I had two personal favorites.  The Crispy Waffle Churros and the Banana-flavored Pancakes.  These dishes are simply bliss!  The waffle churros was crispy outside yet heavenly soft inside!  While the pancakes I would say would be one hell of a pancake!  It was insanely delicious!

An Easy Answer to a Psychiatrist’s Question

One usual and inevitable question you’ll receive in case you would have a session with a psychiatrist is, “When growing up, who do you think loved you unconditionally?

I would have an easy answer to this question.  That would simply be the person whose birthday is today!  Happy Birthday Nengkoy!

Thanks for always being a part of my colorful circus.  I wish that you would continue to bring sunshine and delight to all the people around you… Love you so much!

Queen Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour: A Wish Granted

It was all exclamation points in my thought bubble from the start to finish!  This is how I would describe my general feelings when I watched the Manila leg of Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour.  It was like a super blessing granted to me by the Supreme Being!

singing “La Vie En Rose”

I have been a Madonna fan since the day I first heard the song “Everybody”.  All my classmates, all my friends, my colleagues, my relatives and of course Nengkoy knows this.  And ever since that day, I have been wishing from the heavens to grant me the royal opportunity to see even at least one of her spectacular shows.  I actually thought that this would never be accorded but I guess the Book of Secret is correct all along when it says “Nothing can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts.”

The Rebel Heart tour and finally seeing Madonna performing live would be the apex, the apogee and the culmination of my being diehard fan.

Long live the Queen!!!

V-A-L-E-N-T-I-N-E-S

Remembering.  That is one task I can’t seem to recall on when was the last time I celebrate what should be celebrated today.  But for this year, let me hug, assent and celebrate Valentines.  Actually, the mere fact that I am posting something on Valentines is already a rare and huge celebration on my part.  Typing the letters V-A-L-E-N-T-I-N-E-S actually took some toll on me.  I needed few minutes of some peaceful rest after typing it.

Excited.  But putting myself on some positive note, this is basically my general feeling for the past weeks.  It is because I feel that very soon the one who would sweep me away from my being solo, by myself and alone would finally arrive.  I’m excited to meet the person whom I would simply sit down with enjoying freshly brewed coffee mornings after mornings.

Congratulations.  This would be my heartfelt greetings to all those who were blessed and successful in finding their significant other.  I hope your Valentines this year would be a celebration that would be remembered for a long period of time.  I also hope that your partner would not leave as swiftly as how he/she arrived.

And since I profess of celebrating Valentines today, here’s an old yet emotive song dedicated to those whose feelings were swept away by their significant other.  I’m hoping to feel and sing the same… soon…

O ayan ha.  ‘Di ako ampalaya!
