Ate Gay: From Basilica to SM Arena

The first comedy bar that I have been to was more than 2 decades ago.  It was in (the now defunct) Basilica, an old house turned into a comedy bar located in Malate.  I can clearly recall that one of the night’s hosts during that time was Ate Gay who was wearing Darna costume introducing herself as the Nora Aunor’s version of Darna (though Nora never was a Darna character).

Ate Gay (Gil Morales in real life) was a total riot during that night.  He sings, acts and speaks sounding truly like Nora Aunor. He sang Laura Branigan’s upbeat “Name Game” song in a slow ballad-ic way ala Nora Aunor style. I and my friends so enjoyed that night, it paved the way for us to often visit comedy bars which starts to flourish within the Malate area during that era.

But last night, after more than 2 decades, Ate Gay has moved to a much bigger venue.  I guess ten thousand times bigger than Basilica.  He packed the humongous SM Arena!  And as anticipated, Ate Gay’s repertoires continue to be riotously hilarious.  The gut-busting short film at the start of the show and when she entered the stage harnessed across the end of the venue, I knew the concert would be a blast.

His adorable Darna monologue is still there and it remains exceptionally humorous.  His skill at mixing up various tunes and lyrics received hysterical uproars from the audience.  He is one great genius on extemporaneous mash-ups.  His incomparable declamation entitled “The Door” was also featured which when delivered by others would for sure not be as funny as that of Ate Gay.  Of course, his camp impersonation of Philippine showbiz icon, Nora Aunor, has always been a side-splitting classic.

What I like most about Ate Gay is that he does not need to mock and deride other people to make people laugh.  He actually ridicules himself (his wardrobe, his looks, his voice, his English and even his mole) to elicit laughter from the audience.  He is unassuming, self-effacing and was never “boastful”.  Being able to laugh at one self without conceit and pretensions makes Ate Gay an excellent comedian.

What I Will Bring At Les Miserables Movie-Musical

When watching a well anticipated movie, people would usually bring either a bag of popcorn or chips with a super-sized tumbler of soda.  Some would make sure to bring a hankie especially when they expect to cry over a tragic story. While others would bring or don themselves with costumes of their favorite cartoon character or action hero of the movie they are to watch.

But when the Cameron Mackintosh movie-musical Les Miserables will be shown here in the Philippines, I won’t bring a bag of popcorn, a can of soda, a handkerchief neither would I wear a 19th century inspired French hat or dress up to look like Jean Valjean.  Instead, I would bring a duct tape.

I would bring a duct tape to fasten it on my mouth to keep me from singing on the top of my lungs the lines of the popular songs of this global musical sensation.

Too bad the movie can only be shown in the Philippines after the Christmas Season.  No thanks to the Metro Manila Filmfest.

A Message From Paula Cole

I own two CD albums of Paula Cole.  Until now the resonating range of her voice and magical lyrics in these CDs is a common sound inside my house.  From time to time, I would search for Paula Cole music on Youtube and without missing a single line of the songs, I would sing along.

Dawson’s Creek hit soundtrack I Don’t’ Wanna Wait, three-time Grammy nominated song entitled Where Have All The Cowboys Gone, the upbeat I Believe In Love and the sexy Feelin’ Love are some of her hits.  But my two most favorite Paula Cole songs would be the chilling Nietzsche’s Eyes (which I have written about more than a year ago, press this link – Wailing Woman In My Room) and of course the excruciating I’m So Ordinary.

Today, I received a personal message from Paula Cole through my e-mail account.  It is a thank you note from Paula after I have pledged in helping her produce her next indie-album entitled Raven via kickstarter.com.

Dear Neil,

Thank you very much for your pledge! So appreciated.

Your contribution makes Raven possible and makes our team a success. Please continue to share the link, the word, the enthusiasm so that friends will know too.

 Warm wishes,

Paula.

I pledged because I miss the Paula Cole music and I would definitely be looking forward to listening to her next album.  Peace out!

Pararampam! Pararampam!

According to Simon Cowell a contestant’s choice of song in a singing competition is one humongous factor for the judges and the viewing public to consider the contestant as a good contender.  Have you ever wondered what song are you gonna sing if you are to audition in a talent-reality show?

I do.  Here’s my chosen song…

O ‘di ba… pang standing obeyshon…

Neil Patrick Harris of Planet Earth

neil patrick harris

Can you imagine this planet without Neil Patrick Harris?

Earthlings in their 40s and above know Neil Patrick Harris not as Neil Patrick Harris but as Doogie Howser, MD, the teenage doctor whose life’s lessons are encoded in his computer diary.

Those between their 20s and 30s know him as Barney Stinson, a high functioning metrosexual who never fails to air out his often hypocritical opinions.

But for the budding generation from the newly born to teenagers, they would know Neil Patrick Harris as the most awesome and most amazing host ever of an awards night.  He is so legendary viewers don’t care who wins during the awards night but are more excited listening to him singing and hosting the program.

His works encompasses all generations.  He is one hell of a likable earthling.  I can consider him to be one of the most influential beings of this planet.

Therefore, if this planet is without Neil Patrick Harris, this planet would have sucked so much!

Brilyant dud!

The Pressures Faced Yet Outshined By Jessica Sanchez

If you are a contestant in a singing competition and you are to follow a stratospheric vocal delivery of a contender dubbed by the judges as the greatest live performance in the history of any singing contest, what would you do?

If you are the next contestant to perform in a singing competition and you heard for sure the rendition of your opponent who just sang which was truly amazing and one of the judges announced that he wanted to go home already like announcing to the whole world that the contest is already finished, what would you do?

If you are the person who will sing next in a singing competition and you heard the judges giving the most superlative accolades that a judge could say about a contestant and this contestant was the person who just sang before you, what would you do?

If you are the contestant who was told by the stage director that you should just stand don’t walk around the stage nor go near the live audience and do nothing but sing and you knew that the competitor before you received the most number of standing ovations bestowed by the judges during the elimination process of the contest, what would you do?

Could you still sing with all these chock-full of pressures at hand? This is what Jessica Sanchez was faced with during the top 4 elimination round of American Idol Season 11.  If I am in the shoes of Jessica Sanchez at that very moment, I for sure would just be compelled to step back, shut my mouth, pack my bags, go home and never sing a single song ever in my life.

Before Jessica Sanchez sang, I wondered what song was she gonna sing to topple down the performance of Joshua Ledet to prove to the judges and the viewing public that they were wrong.  I even thought to myself that I would totally understand with full compassion if the host Ryan Seacrest will announce that Jessica Sanchez has decided not to sing and just backed out from the contest.

But that is not what Jessica Sanchez did.  She actually sang one of the most difficult songs on the planet and simply gave her all!  After seeing and hearing Jessica Sanchez sang her second song entitled And I Am Telling You, I hated her.  I hated her because I wanted to smack her down, rip her throat open and put her vocal chords into my body and use them!

Jessica Sanchez seemed not shaken by the pressure for she was fabulous and was flawless.  I don’t know where she came from!  It’s absolutely insane!  She is so great! I don’t even think she’s from planet earth!

What she just did and overcame was simply a mark and testimony of a true IDOL!

Galing mo neng!

Bongga! Mama Mia!

Every night since January 24 of this year, every time I would step out of my veranda buckets of drool would come out of my mouth.  This is because from my veranda I could see the Cultural Center of the Philippines lighted up in its full glory welcoming the excited spectators of the fun and global smash hit musical Mama Mia.

But tonight, I stopped drooling because just this afternoon during its matinee run, I, Nengkoy, my elder sister Gaying and nephew Luis had the awesome opportunity to see and watch the spectacular show. Performed no less by the international touring U.K. cast and production.

The show features more than 20 songs of ABBA that is intricately lined-up and positioned together to create a cohesive musical storyline. ABBA is a popular Swedish pop group which I and my siblings grew up listening to during the ‘70s.  Because of this, I was literally singing along in every song in the repertoire. “Take A Chance On Me”, “The Winner Takes It All”, “SOS”, “Money, Money, Money”, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”, “Super Trouper” and “I Have A Dream” to name a few.

thanks Ate for the treat : )

When ABBA smashed global hits in the ‘70s Nengkoy was basically of the same age I am now.  Thus, Nengkoy no doubt was also enjoying the pure fun musical.  For me, that’s what mattered most, me and Nengkoy enjoying the musical together.  Nengkoy was literally dancing on her seat when ala-concert style performance was done on the last 3 songs of the show – “Mama Mia”, “Dancing Queen”, and “Waterloo”.

Add to the popular music are the marvelous ‘70s inspired costumes, excellent stage lighting as well as the impressive revolving stage which makes the musical even more incredibly amazing.

I was swept away at the finale when the female lead character shouted “Thank You Manila!” and asked the audience in Tagalog, “Gusto nyo pa?!!” (You want more?!) in thick British accent.  The audience certainly shouted, “Yeah!” in heavy Tagalog accent.  She then shouted “Bongga!!!” – a ‘70s Filipino slang meaning fab, groovy and marvelous  – and started singing and gyrating along with the rest of the cast to the tune of “Waterloo”.

Mama Mia is no doubt a fun-perfect musical!  I love it.

Bongga!!!
