My 28th Day Hurdle of Breaking the Smoking Habit

superfriends

my super friends

It is believed that it takes 28 days to form or break a habit.  Last Saturday, January 26 was actually my 28th day of being cigarette free.  Ironically, it was the toughest test of my being a smoke-free mortal.  This was the day I caught-up with my super friends who knows that I am a notorious smoker every time we would go out.

We convened at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel I did not smoke.  We had dinner at a Filipino restaurant in Resorts World I did not smoke.  And the hurdle of all hurdles, we went to a smoke-filled dance club along Julia Vargas Avenue in Pasig later that same night and  I surprisingly did not lit a cigarette.  I’m even proud to say that I never psychopathically craved for it the whole time I was with my great buddies.  No drooling, no chills, no big cold sweats.  I was normal and simply had pure fun.

With this, I can superciliously announce that I passed the test, emerged triumphant and totally broke the noxious smoking habit.

Aym pretty shur gradweyt na ko sa yosi.

Toot toot! Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year!!!

Cheers to another year of awesomeness!

me blowing a 5-year old trumpet

One interesting anecdote that can be derived from the photo above is the torotot (party horn).  It’s a five-year-old bugle which Nengkoy brings out annually from her precious storage chest.  It’s the same bunch of paper trumpets that me and my relatives would use to welcome the New Year.  These hooters are only replaced when it is deemed damaged, pauperized or no longer toots and tootles when blown.

As I’ve observed from the malls recently, today’s party horns are modernized.  It’s made of hard colorful plastic and need not be blown using the strength of your breath.  It is simply pumped by both hands to produce a honking sound.  Also, modern horns seem to have a different sound.  It sounds more like the vuvuzela of South Africa used during the 2010 World Cup.

But Nengkoy’s horns still sounds the classic New Year paper-made trumpets.  Because the mouthpiece that produce the tooting sound (attached inside the nozzle) when I checked is still made of a piece of small hallow bamboo.  Last night, when I sampled the horns, the first thing I uttered was, “Tunog sinauna” (It sounds old and ancient).

Me and my family do not light up fire crackers (like what others would habitually do) to drive away the bad chi of the coming year.  Maybe my family is too clever to play with the dangers of lighting fire crackers and rather smartly chose to be in the safe zone.  Instead, we would usher the welcoming of the New Year by blasting confetti cannons and of course by blowing Nengkoy’s carton-made party horns.

After the New Year revelry, Nengkoy would simply collect all these trumpets, test each if it is still working and store it again in her storage box for next year’s celebration.  Next year for sure I will be blowing the same old yet reliable party horns.

Tut tut! Hapi Nyu Yir!!!

Rizal’s Mona Lisa Smile

Today is Rizal Day.  Let me then post my personal favorite among the numerous photos of the ultimate Pinoy henyo and hero, Jose Rizal.

This is one unusual photo of Rizal which bears his Mona Lisa smile.  It is unlike the usual photo of Rizal which is mostly serious, tensed, unsmiling and oftentimes nondescript.  In this photo he looks happy and seems to have done something naughty.  I specially adore the hoity-toity vibe on his pretty face in this photo.  He looks cool and definitely hip!

what's on his mind...?

what’s on his mind…?

Another remarkable about this photo is that you can actually generate and formulate various thoughts and ideas (similar to the Mona Lisa) on what is on his mind while the shot is being carried out.  It’s a simple yet mysterious smile that can conceive millions of interpretations.

or is it

Fail lala lala lalalala!

You need not worry that on the night before Christmas there will be no big bearded fat  man who will jump in at your window, grab you and puts you in a red sack. Though I told Santa I wanted you for Christmas…  He refused!  He told me I have been so naughty this year.  Nevertheless…

Joyful holiday wishes and warm greetings to all of you!

Here’s a Christmas song/video of my favorite band this year…  I hope you rock the Christmas night away…

Maligayang Pasko…

Thank You Lou & Greg

the oreo-cookie-look-alike mayan calendar

I would like to personally thank two people who were responsible for the calendar that the world is now using.  Aloysius Lilius, the Italian astronomer and physicist who invented the solar-cycle-based Gregorian calendar and Pope Gregory XIII who approved on this calendar that bears his name.

It’s been all around the news for the past months that according to the Mayan calendar, tomorrow will be the end of the world.  Can you just imagine what we are now doing in case the Mayan calendar is the one that proliferated around this planet and the one we earthlings are using?  Today must probably be nothing but chaos.

Thanks Lou and Greg.  Because of you two, I’m not packing my bags and ready to go to either Venus or Mars since the world will not end tomorrow.  Nevertheless, December 21, 2012 will be dubbed as the most widely-disseminated doomsday tale of human history.

Tuloy ang buhay. May pasok bukas!

Gifts Received On My Birthday

I had a blast when I celebrated my birthday.  As a gift for myself, I slept the whole morning, purchased a couple of books to read for the next few nights and had a relaxing massage.  Later in the day I had dinner buffet with my family at Yanagi Japanese Restaurant at Midas Hotel.

While having our dinner, I received the best gifts for my birthday.  One came from my younger sister and zany nephews, i.e. a Sponge Bob printed boxer briefs in which the box where it is contained seems more expensive than the actual gift.  Another is the sumptuous blowout dinner buffet paid for by my elder sister in which I was surprised because the waiters of the Japanese restaurant gave me a candle-lit cake and sang me a birthday song in the tune of One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful.

Lastly of course was the gift given by Nengkoy.  A personalized printed shirt that bears the usual question I would often utter to my nieces and nephews whenever they would show me something that they have done – “Is That Your Best?”  Let me post some other time why I got to terms with this line of questioning.

By the way let me thank all the beautiful souls who greeted me on my birthday.  Let me post in this blog the jokey note I have written on my Facebook page as my expression of gratitude…

Let me express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who greeted me a Happy Birthday today.  Each greeting really meant a lot to me and absolutely made my day.  How thoughtful, how Goldilocks!

Because of your greetings, I feel like Purefoods Fiesta Ham, the Star of the Noche Buena Feast!  Because you remembered I’m like KFC, finger lickin’ good!  Para kayong Vick’s Vapo Rub, may haplos ng pagmamahal.

Now that my birthday is ending, my personal mood is like Lactum, 100% Panatag.  Tomorrow for sure would be like Meralco… May Liwanag Ang Buhay… xoxo

Salamasss!

Feeling Kafkaesque

Feeling kafkaesque.  This is exactly how I felt because the severe and cruel Cyber Crime Law of the Philippines takes effect today.  Without the implementing rules and regulations of this newly implemented law, it evokes nightmarish feelings of disorientation and helplessness.  A lot of mixed-up thoughts would sneak into my mind on what shall be a specific idea that can be posted, shared or “liked” on my social network account that will not make me a cyber criminal.  I feel so disoriented with this law that it even came to a point of thinking that “liking” a photo of a freshly cooked medium well steak posted by a friend on Facebook would be so offensive to the vegetarians these vegetarians can file a case against me.

Feeling kafkaesque.  This is exactly how I felt after watching the multi-awarded movie entitled Give Up Tomorrow which has a limited run in few movie houses in the metro.  It is a docu-film about Paco Larranaga who was convicted of a crime which the movie claims he clearly did not commit yet struggles for the elusive justice and vindication.  His life and his family have been overpowered by the bizarre and cruel Philippine bureaucracies.  I felt so baffled and perplexed about the incomprehensibly complex and illogical circumstances he was faced with regarding the embarrassing Philippine justice system. His struggles as well as the events that transpired and still transpiring sent me chills, I was squirming on my seat while watching.  I have nothing but remorse for this man and his family.

Grabe, ang sakit sa anit! Ikaw? Nakakapkaisk ka ba?

Filipino Language In A Hit Hollywood Movie During The Language Month

August is the Philippines’ Language Month.  It is but so fitting that in this month the movie Bourne Legacy was shown in cinemas worldwide.  It is so apt because there were a lot of times when the Filipino-Tagalog language was uttered in the said movie.

In one scene female lead star Rachel Weisz was being advised by a Tagalog-speaking pharmacist-vendor about the medicines she is buying.  Rachel responded and looks as if she understood. And since a lot of scenes were depicted and shot in Manila it is but inevitable to hear Tagalog spoken from the background.  There was one scene that I laughed out hard since the cursing in Filipino was smacking solid!

And of course, aside from enjoying a witty yet action-packed movie, I was delighted at the end part of the film when the lead star Jeremy Renner spoke one Tagalog word.  He uttered “salamat” when he thanked the son of a boatman who helped them escape from their foes by sailing away from Manila and heads for Palawan.

Hearing the Filipino-Tagalog language spoken in an international hit Hollywood movie during the Language Month is quite refreshing.  Because in the last Hollywood film which I saw where Tagalog language was spoken, my native tongue is being uttered by the devil.

constantine starring keanu reeves

It was in the movie entitled Constantine starring Keanu Reeves.  In the first scene of the movie, a lady was being possessed by the devil and while being on a mad trace she threats and curses in Tagalog.  I can still clearly recall the young kid watching in front of me seated with his dad inside the cinema became so upset and distressed telling his father in a very dreary tone that the devil is a Filipino.

He said, “Ay Papa, ba’t ganun? Ang demonyo pala ay Filipino.” (Translation: “Hey Papa, why is it like that?  The devil is a Filipino.)  He cried, hugged his dad and turned traumatized because I guess he realized that the spoken language in hell is Tagalog.  Hahaha! Good thing though, Constantine was not shown in the month of August, otherwise, I would be insulted.

Salamat Jeremy, salamat Rachel pero no tenks kay Keyanu at sa demonyu.

My Lunch Today Is About Dolphy

Today the whole Philippines observe the National Day of Remembrance in honor of Dolphy, The Comedy King of Philippine cinema.

In today’s national observance, my lunch is Munggo Bean Soup (a thick green mung bean bisque with smoked fish flakes topped with pork cracklings); Sinuteng Baby Pusit (young squids sauted in olive oil with chunks of sliced garlic); and, a cup of jasmine rice as ordered from Bistro Remedios in Malate, which happens to be one of Dolphy’s favorite restaurants in the metro.

Press this LINK, a news article in Manila Bulletin to support such claim. If you will try the dishes in Bistro Remedios, you will never wonder why the late Philippines’ King of Comedy often dined there.  It’s yummy! What about you, what’s the tiny yet trivial thing you did today to commemorate the day’s national observance?

Nengkoy Blog: 6th Year Anniversary

According to my dubious computation based on the mathematical formula of space-time distortion combined with quantum mechanics, the total number of posts in this blog since the time it started is actually equivalent to a very short period of time as compared to an average yet more popular blog.

Putting it in simple words, the number of posts in this blog is too few.  Reason? The only time I post a piece of writing is when my leisure time has a leisure time.

Still and all, I am proud that this blog managed to reach considerable years of existence.  Today, June 20, 2012 Nengkoy (blog) is six years old!
