TED Talk about a New York Style Pork Adobo

I don’t cook but if I am to give a TED talk, one possible topic that I would discuss would be the event when I cooked Adobo.  A pork adobo for that matter.  It is because this is the first time ever that I cooked such a Filipino dish and this happened not in the Philippines but no less than the high-end, well-heeled and sophisticated New York.

I would talk about the feelings of anxiety on how such ingredients would end up being edible and be fit for human consumption.  I would talk about the various moods I felt when I was being instructed to the point of being obligated by my friend (Jhong) on what to do as well as the tips on how a perfect adobo would be like.

I would talk about the joys of learning how supportive another friend (Sid) became and gave a cooking-adjustment-advise during the duration of my cooking when the dish is turning to become salty and tough to the bite.  I would talk about the pleasures of slow cooking and low-fire culinary technique as well as the innuendos of having to wash the dishes while waiting for this amazing dish to cook. I would talk about the thrill of discovering the secret ingredients that I learned so that the dish would be considered the best adobo ever.

I would talk about the ecstasies, the bliss and the delight when friends considered my first time Adobo to be such a great adobo dish!  We all finished it!  Jhong even brought some to his office as a “baon” (packed lunch).

And by the way, I’ve tagged this adobo as the New York Style Pork Adobo.  I’m pretty sure, I would gain standing ovations and be invited to various TED talk events and venues if I would talk about it.  Even Mr. TED of TED talk, whoever he may be, for sure would love my pork adobo.

A Failed Ambition to See Jimmy Fallon

One of the few failures I had when I was in New York was my unable to be part of the studio audience at NBC’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.  The awesome show has consistently and continuously been a source of viral videos.  The show which usually features fun celebrity games, hilarious yet witty comedic monologues, fantastic musical renditions and interview of A-list guests is taped and recorded in an NBC studio at the Rockefeller Center in New York City.

felt like an nbc celebrity...

feeling like an nbc celebrity…

It was a long shot of an aim to succeed anyway because I failed to reserve even a single ticket months before my New York arrival.  And I do not have the audacity to queue in line so early in the morning so as to be chosen as a standby audience hoping for the reserved ticket holders to die or meet an accident or catch some communicable disease so that they would not show up.

The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon is not shown in the Philippines, but due to the magic of the internet I got to see lots of clips and episodes of the show via Youtube.  My favorite thing about the show aside from Jimmy Fallon himself is that he gets the celebrities do fun things.  It lets you see celebrities being out of their element and in ways you’ve never usually see them.

And from what I have seen, Jimmy Fallon for me is the coolest breathing human being in America.  His hilarious jokes are spot-on.  He sings well, he acts well, he laughs at his feebleness and is indeed very adorable.    It actually doesn’t hurt that he looks way way better as compared to his late night show host predecessors.  In fact, if I am to marry a dude in America, I want that person to be just like Jimmy Fallon.

And since I obviously am a fan, during my New York journey, the nearest ways for me to get close to the endearing Fallon was this…

1.  I bought myself lots of Jimmy Fallon merchandise…

Shake Shack: A Kick Ass New York Burger

Feeling famished, I used up all my remaining patience on waiting in line so as to experience and savor the taste of New York’s most popular burger.  Though the line moved pretty quickly, it was actually the longest 30 minutes of my New York adventure.

When I picked up the tray that contained two savory-looking burgers and a salver of freshly cooked French fries with gooey cheese on top from the dispatching counter and placed it in front of me and my friend Amiel, I swear I thought I was about to shed a tear.  The aroma of grilled meat filled my lungs, making me question whether exhaling has to be necessary.

This is what I experienced when I and Amiel (a New Yorker sweetie and the niece of my super friend Jhong) dined at Shake Shack at 8th Street in New York. Shake Shack has been touted as the holy grail of burgers in New York and their burgers have had lining up customers for an hour or more at their New York City branches.  It’s the counter part of west coast’s yummy In ‘N Out which I equally enjoyed when I stayed in Los Angeles last year.

As for the taste, Shake Shack’s Shack Burger can easily be considered one of the best burgers I had in my life. The meat was enchantingly juicy and tasty while the potato buns were like little soft clouds to the palate.  The full glory of the burger was all over it, from the first bite up to the last.

Aside from the crinkle cuts of the fries, there’s nothing fancy and complicated about it.  Shake Shack fries are simply freshly cooked that is crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.  The simplicity of the fries somehow works well because it compliment the complex phenomenal taste and flavor of the burger.

Shake Shack burger was one dreamy encounter.  I loved every nano second of it!

Kinky Boots: A High-Heeled Surprise of My New York Adventure

surprise! surprise!

surprise! surprise!

According to Dalai Lama, “the purpose of our lives is to be happy”.  And this is exactly what I thought o after I watched the amazing Kinky Boots, the third Broadway musical show I saw in New York.

Prior to watching this Broadway musical, the only thing I know about the show is that it is a Tony award-winning musical.  I don’t know what the story is about, I haven’t heard about the music and neither do I know anything about the cast.  Blame this to my being an inhabitant living a simple life at the other end of the world.

the view from my seat…

Kinky Boots is not a popular Broadway musical in Manila, unlike the classic Les Miz, Phantom, Miss Saigon or even Wicked.  But after seeing the show it actually became one of my favorites.  The story is simple and uncomplicated yet it opened a whole new perspective about prejudice, intolerance and acceptance.

There are lots of heartfelt wisdom that can be extracted from the show.  It tackles about the struggles of trying to fit in.  It is about the blossoming of life as soon as acceptance has kicked in.  It even tackled the life’s various phases: childhood, adulthood, friendship, career, life’s ambition, secret admiration and even death.  The story seem to have something for everyone.  This is without eliminating the basics of a fun, fab and highly entertaining musical: excellent music, spectacular production, gifted singing talent and hip dance moves.

Kinky Boots got a big heart!  That is why it has become one of my favorites.  And I would not mind watching it again in case I visit New York again.  If not, Kinky Boots I hope would reach the shores of Manila.  This musical would definitely be something to watch.  Charlie, Lola (the main characters) and the rest of the cast are of course welcome to perform in my city.

I’m pretty sure in case the Dalai Lama would have the opportunity to watch this musical, he himself would say “watching Kinky Boots is a must so as to live a happy life”.

Swept Away by the Statue of Liberty

It took me some sweet days in New York before I was able to go to the Liberty Island, no thanks to the cold, punitive and prolonged winter.  I literally pushed myself on seeing the statue because I agree with every organism’s principle living on this breathing planet that you have actually never been to New York (or the United States for that matter) if you haven’t seen the Statue of Liberty.

"welcome to new york"

“welcome to new york”

On the day of my visit, I was actually already feeling jittery when I reached the Battery Park and got hold of my ferry ticket that will bring me to Liberty Island.  Such jitters were of reasons I don’t know.  It took less than ten minutes for the ferry boat to reach the island.  And even before the ferry has docked, all of us passengers were already taking photos of the stupendous statue of the unsmiling expressionless green lady holding a torch.

After taking a photo, I was experiencing some strange visual mirage.  I was seeing the green lady to be smiling and seem to be uttering some words while waving its arms towards us.  And then, all of a sudden I was suffering from acoustic illusion and could actually hear the most iconic American representation of freedom and democracy singing the song of Taylor Swift entitled “Welcome to New York”.

After a short walk of the island and while taking the next ferry to bring me to Ellis Island did I realize that the experience was so breathtaking it made me hallucinate.  But further contemplation made me conclude that such irrational visions and hearing was actually due to extreme envy.

swept away by the grandeur of this lady

I was green-eyed and jealous of the fact that the United States is so free, democratic and unregimented.  I was so envious of the massive opportunities and social services provided to its citizens for them to live descent lives.  I was so envious of the fact that their country is such a superpower it can actually control and influence world affairs.  And lastly, which is actually the most essential, is that citizens has the right to wear leather jackets, trench coats and fashionable layers of clothing without bursting a single sweat gland.

the “now-iconic-apartment” address

66 Perry Street, Manhattan is my most desired apartment destination on my on-going New York adventure.  This is because this is the very address where an open-minded and independent New Yorker with unique fashion sense lives.  Her name is Carrie Bradshaw.

66 Perry Street, Manhattan is the very apartment where Carrie would write the various relationship spectrums she would deal with in life.  These relationships would focus on herself, her colleagues, the people of New York and of course her friends.  Their names are Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha.

66 Perry Street, Manhattan is the very apartment where deep contemplations were carried out.  It is also were the moments Carrie’s happiness as well as loneliness were assessed.  This is where the complicated and entangled situations with the love of her life are pondered upon.  His name is Mr. Big.

66 Perry Street, Manhattan is the now-iconic-apartment where I and a young friend Amiel (sweet kikay niece of Jhong) went to so as to take a photo of ourselves to prove that we indeed were big fans of the movie and tv sitcom series Sex And The City.  Other apartments were equally gorgeous (if not more than gorgeous) and were without the restrictions to step on the stairs.  Channeling our inner Sex And The City vibe,  we of course took the chance to pose and take some photos…

Les Miserables, The Musical: A Goosebumps Overload Experience

The main purpose of my visiting New York is to see at least one musical Broadway show.  I told myself that as soon as I have seen one, the rest of my New York adventure would utterly be but awesome add-ons.  Ever since the time I have been aware about the existence of Broadway musicals, I have always set into the deepest travails of my mind that someday I would be blessed and be able to watch one.

This mindset actually came true last March 29, 2015.  That day, I did not settled for less popular musicals but instead went on to watch the world’s most epic, Les Miserables.  I actually got chills when I was handed my ticket at the box office.

I am so glad to have chosen Les Miserables as my first Broadway musical experience.  What I know is that this epic tale has started to be considered a “classic” of modern musical theater.  It is a beautiful story about compassion and forgiveness all set against the backdrop of the French Revolution.

got my playbill and the ticket...

And when the show started my goosebumps were exploding.  It was so profuse and persistent, I thought my goosebumps already grew goosebumps of its own.  I was a bit nervous because I thought my fingernails were even growing it.  And every time a highlight song has been sang, my goosebumps would cheer with bellowing sounds and clap along with me.

My happiness was further intensified when I noticed it is the magnificent Ramin Karimloo is the one who was acting/singing the role of Jean Valjean.

When the show’s finale song was sung and Jean Valjean, Fantine and Eponine sang the lyrics “to love another person is to see the face of God!”, I was sobbing.  I was crying because of such a sad sad story (imagine almost all of the main characters died).  And during curtain call while the audience were on a standing ovation,  I was still crying for joy because I was given the exceptional opportunity to see such a spectacular show.

And when I stepped out of the theater, I can hear my goosebumps were shouting at me saying “Thank you! Thank you!”

Speechless at the World Trade Center Memorial

Feeling the vibrant charge of New York, I navigated my way to the World Trade Center located in Greenwich Street.  The first thing I had in mind was to immediately have a selfie to prove, seal and record that I have actually been to the 9/11 Memorial thirteen years after the extremely tragic and deadly attack.

powerful!

But as soon as I stepped into the memorial plaza, my effervescent bubbly feeling vanished.  I was suddenly charged with gloom-ness and melancholy.  The place was beautiful but it seems that grief and misery still fills the air.  It was just too powerful not to feel it.  Maybe it is because of the amount of tears that has been shed and intensity of sadness that has been vented out in the area that made me shut up, pause and contemplate.

I realized that smiling at a camera and shooting a selfie in the area seem disrespectful to the victims as well as the families affected by the tragedy.  What I simply did was took a couple of photos and say a little prayer.

Like any other normal human being, I prayed that there would not be another World Trade Center Memorial…

Making Use of My Train Trainings at New York Trains

I can’t believe that I am now in New York.  All the tiring 20 hours of travelling by air I guess is all worth it.  My first day in New York was basically an orientation with my super friend Jhong on how to use the complicated subway.

smile... no worries...

smile… no worries…

But with my practical background of experience, I can proudly say that going around New York by myself via intricate subway would be an easy stroll in a park.  I attribute this easy learnings from two tenets.

First is my exposure to the equally complicated subways of Tokyo and Osaka.  I think navigating Japan trains is more challenging because the names of the stations are written in Japanese kanji, and if written in the English alphabet the names of these Japanese stations are really very hard to remember.  Japanese train station names looks and sounds like they are from another planet.

I was so channeling my Japanese-subway learnings  that it became so apparent because a couple times Japanese tourists thought I was Japanese and asked me in Nipponggo on how to go to certain points of New York.

Second, I am all but well trained and exposed to the Metro Manila congestion.  I am proud to say that I am ready to face the New York crowdedness because of my exposure to the Manila congested trains.  Nothing beats the crammed people-congested trains of Manila.  It’s hot, humid, jam-packed,smelly, hazardous and least to say, inefficient.

cheers...

cheers…

That is why on my second day in the State of New York, no thanks to the allergy attacks of my super friend (I guess this is due to stress upon realizing that I would be staying in his apartment for 2 weeks, hahaha!) I went on my own and easily navigated the New York subway from Woodside in Queens to the glorious Time Square in Manhattan and back.  It was supposed to be very easy but things got challenging when there were a couple of stations that were unpassable and were under maintenance, thus, the need to change lines and platforms.  But all went well, thanks to my Japanese and Manila train trainings.

Next adventure tomorrow would be the World Trade Center Memorial and the bucolic-like Chelsea Market…

Brewing Excitement on the Next 2015 Adventure

One of the philosophies that I have long been observing is to maximize my existence and celebrate the gift of life no matter how simple life’s circumstances are.  I call it my “glorious ordinary”.

But this maximization and celebration of a simple life should not in any way impede on achieving my big dreams and ambitious aspirations.  No way would I “kick the bucket” and stop realizing my dreams or cease the fulfillment of my bucket list.

In the next couple of weeks, my “glorious ordinary” would have to temporarily be placed on halt because something big is about to happen to my life.  My next adventure would definitely be a fulfillment of one item in my very long and very ambitious bucket list… .

I am actually now excited and is already looking forward to my next adventure… Expect lots of posts about this journey.  For the meantime, here’s an Instagram post to announce where my next big adventure is going to be.
