Miss Universe Plus One

miss philippines (ariella arida); 3rd runner up in the miss universe 2013

Congratulations to Miss Philippines for being in the top 5 again in the recently concluded Miss Universe Pageant.  This is the 4th consecutive year a beautiful and smart Filipina placed the Top Five.  This definitely sealed the concept that Philippines is a first-rate powerhouse in the world of international beauty pageants.

I am not complaining that it has been four consecutive years that the Philippines almost took the coveted title.  It has been said that our country’s major movers on international pageants already has the correct formula for winning.  But I beg to disagree because there is one ingredient missing in their formula.  And that would be a Pageant Interpreter.

May our candidate possess a sharp and perfect command of the English language or not, we should still have the component called Pageant Interpreter.  It’s the missing element for geeze sakes!  And these brilliant movers must give in to the enduring clamor of the Filipino people that Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago be our candidate’s Pageant Interpreter.

As for this year’s winner, let me extend my warm congratulations!  As for the owner of the Miss Universe Organization, Mr. Donald Trump, let me remind you that would have to shell out more than just what Miss Venezuela has won.  You would now have to add an additional pax in the budget of Miss Universe 2013 for her every trip, meeting, function or social engagement that she would have to attend.  It would be additional expenses for plane tickets, meals, clothing, room accommodations and the likes.  This would obviously be for the essential and necessary Mr. or Ms. Interpreter.

last year, venezuela missed the "translator" element that is why they lose

last year’s venezuela candidate was more stunning than this year’s winner, but they missed the “translator” element that is why she lose

I always believe that a Pageant Interpreter can actually make a beauty contestant sound intelligent.  It has been an accepted fact that a translator’s skill and proficiency in integrating the idea of another person’s thought spoken in a different language through the usage of flowery expressions, momentous terms and big words can make a lot of difference.  Hence, let me also congratulate Mr. Interpreter for also winning the coveted crown!

Si Miriam talaga ang kulang. Pag hindi pa din tayo nanalo papagalitan nun si Donald Trump.

No Need My Dear HK Legislators

a photo from discoverhongkong.com

a photo from discoverhongkong.com

Legislators in Hong Kong need not put into law their impeding plans of withdrawing the visa-free access of Filipinos in their territory.  It is because I no longer intend to go there anymore.  Yeah, I have been to Hong Kong a couple of times but there seem to be no reason anymore to visit again.

With all the news of HK government being so “asar” (pissed off) with the Manila City government, the Manila police and the Philippine government as a whole due to the unfortunate Luneta shooting incident that killed a number of HK citizens, no Filipino in his right set of mind would want to tour HK.  People would have to slip me in a straight jacket, place me in a box and send me through door to door courier if you would want me to go there.

Last year, I actually declined an offer to go there for free, as in an all expenses-paid travel.  From airline ticket, to land transfers, to food, to hotel accommodation.  I chose to stay in lively Manila, be busy with my job and do something more productive instead.

I do not have the eloquence of an angel when I speak so let me be blunt when I say that Hong Kong lawmakers can keep their Pinoy-visa-free access to themselves.  To prove this further, even my nieces who will be gifted by my elder sister next year with a trip abroad after they have finished their respective college degrees will instead go to Singapore.  They initially planned to go to HK, but upon learning those distressing news, they themselves decided that it would no longer be smart for a Pinoy to go there.  This is apart from the fact that my elder sister no longer wants to spend her hard earned money to any business in HK.  That’s three less tourists for you next year…

People reading this may suppose that I am insensitive to the more than 160,000 Filipino workers in HK.  I guess, they need not worry because if their respective employers truly need them because of their efficiency, diligence, politeness and reliability at work (the typical Overseas Filipino Workers’ traits), these HK employers themselves would of course process and shoulder the expense in the application for Filipino workers’ visa. Besides, initial news points out that the visa-free access withdrawal plans would only be applied to Filipino visitors, meaning tourists (like me), not overseas Filipino workers.  Because if they would include our laudable overseas workers, their houses would turn filthy, their kids would have difficulty learning English and Disney in HK won’t be as lively and fun as it is.

I just hope that lawmakers in the Philippines would not reciprocate by requiring Hong Kong citizens to secure their respective visas prior to enter the Philippines.  That would be such an undiplomatic and childish move.  HK legislators can sulk in hatred and abhorrence all they want but we should let HK citizens enter and be made to realize that Philippines is actually a safe haven for them.  They need to understand that the people of the Philippines have not done wrong to the people of Hong Kong.  What they need is a paradigm shift and that the Luneta incident is a mishap that even Filipinos themselves would not want to happen.

Finally, I’d rather process a visa application going to other more interesting state or country than spend the same precious time, effort and money applying for a visa going to irate and fuming Hong Kong.

Inyo na. As in.

Donating to Bohol the Easy and Dyahe-Free Way

Hey! Have you done your share of donating to the victims of Bohol 7.2 magnitude earthquake?  I did.

With the unprecedented level of realistic gore and massive destructions in the beautiful province of Bohol, I suppose your prayers and sympathy won’t be enough.  This catastrophe needs some damn concrete action like giving donation.

A lot of people wonder how they could lodge in their cash donations.  Others feel its “dyahe” (awkward) that they would have to deposit their cash donations to a bank account of trustworthy foundations when they deem that the amount they are donating is quite trivial.  This is aside from the fact that it would take you some trouble knowing the account numbers of those foundations and effort to proceed and transact to a bank.

Read!

Read! While waiting for the cashier to process my donation, i got the chance to take a photo of this signage located right in front of their cash register

I did my donating the easier way.  Its hassle free!   I simply proceeded to the nearest 7-Eleven store and hand over my cash donation while at the same time purchase myself a large “asado siopao” for my dinner.  This new 7-Eleven facility is so new cashiers won’t mind how much you donate.  Thus, it’s never “dyahe”.

Yeah, 7-Eleven accepts cash donations which will directly be issued to DSWD (Department of Social Welfare & development).  After handing over your cash, your name will be asked to be registered.  And yes, don’t forget to get your donation receipt…

Be a blessing everyone!

Psst! Reydi? Sing!!! Walang sinuman ang nabubuhay para sa sarili lamang…

Donya Ina

donya ina, photo grabbed from the facebook page

Donya Ina is the newest anti-social media monster – at least here in the Philippines – whom ironically everybody loves.  According to her Facebook fan page which was conceived only 11 days ago, she has already generated 277,209 likes (including me).

Everybody loves Donya Ina because her opinions and advises about the ills of putting ridiculous posts on social media is in a form of satirical lampoon that leads to the highest form of laughter.  Her intelligent insults and offensive yet clever attacks about stupid acts people do on social media is something to be pondered about.

The way a potter would center the clay on his wheel, Donya Ina is sharp and straightforward yet funny about the painful truth. She would not hesitate in making you realize that you made a complete and utter ass of yourself.

Think about it, how much do you really gain from going on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram?  I’m pretty sure it’s not much.  But Donya Ina doesn’t say that we should stop using Facebook, Twitter or Instagram since these has become vital parts of our day to “connect” with other people.  However, she is the virtual life form who intellectualizes in a hilarious mode about how pathetic we look by trying to make ourselves cooler than we really are on the internet.

And what is so good about Donya Ina is that even though she is cantankerously grumpy she just wants to impart her astuteness and her maternal love to all her “anak” (children) in the internet world, because at the end of her every clever and analytical oration she would ask you to explain what you just did yet need not want an answer.  And would rather end up your conversation by saying… Labyu (love you).

Labyu tu Donya Ina…

Megan Young BBC Interview

miss world 2013

miss world 2013

Upon knowing that we were Filipinos, the local Starbucks crew inside Siam Discovery Center in Bangkok told us that Ms. Philippines who won the Ms World 2013 pageant was indeed beautiful.  We left that coffee shop proud and with a smile on our respective faces.

I have seen a couple of YouTube clips of the pageant and saw how stunning Megan Young strut her stuff.  She was undeniably elegant and was no doubt a standout among all the candidates.  It seems that all stars and heavenly bodies connived and has preordained that Miss Philippines will be crowned as this year’s Miss World.

This pageant’s question and answer portion though was a bit floppy.  It is because all the finalists had ample time to think of the best philosophical answer that they could give on why they should be the next Ms. World.   They were even given the opportunity to listen to the answer of other candidates, thus, a lot of cerebral reckoning and calculations can be done before you are given the chance to answer the same question.  It was therefore not surprising that all the finalists gave superlative answers.

Miss Philippines winning the crown absolutely made all Filipinos proud.  But what made me more impressed about Megan Young was not her performance during the pageant per se but the interview she had with a BBC correspondent.  Her being level headed, articulate and impressive bearing during the whole interview reaffirmed, showed and validated that she unquestionably deserves the title. Also, the interview makes you glad and appreciate that we Filipinos knows without effort the powers of speaking the universal language, that is, English.

It was an effortless eloquence from this year’s Queen Of The World.

Respect

Respect pinned on noticeboard

The word for today is RESPECT.  And I would like to dedicate this word to the big bad wolves of today’s Philippine society, namely:

  • The mother of all scams, Janet Napoles
  • Best buddies in thievery Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla
  • Shameful Nur Misuari and the dim-witted MNLF gang
  • Crooked star-crossed lovers Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile and Atty. Gigi Reyes

You may have not heard the word respect, so let Elmo and Henry Cavill teach you a little something about it…

Mayaman nga kayo, wala naman kayong respeto… haler…

Morisette a Phillie and Dami an Aussie

The ladies that I am rooting for in their respective singing battles…  Dami Im of X Factor Austalia and Morisette Amon of The Voice Philippines.  Both are gems.  Their passions are incredible.  And are definitely show stoppers…

These girls are on fire!!!  Their performances every week are stunning!!!

Dami army is in full force!

The future is set for Morisette!

Why Nigh Tagaytay?

It’s an easeful short voyage out of jungle Manila.  I don’t have to purchase plane tickets.  And most of all I love the snuggly weather.

i love their buffet

i love their lunch buffet

I and a few members of my family did a short getaway to cool breezy Tagaytay.  We were supposed to stay overnight but after a sumptuous buffet lunch at Bags of Beans Café & Restaurant that filled us to our respective alimentary rims… everybody agreed that the money to be spent in a luxurious hotel would be more appropriate to buy miscellany of foodstuffs that can be brought back to Manila.

That is the beauty of charming Tagaytay.  Being so near Manila, you can actually return anytime that you may want or back out from it if your nutty erratic and eclectic judgment wished so.

After lunch we stepped into the coffee shop portion of Bag Of Beans and purchase us bag loads of freshly baked (and still hot) loaves of raisin bread, a box of their special and very popular blueberry cheesecake and packs of buttered biscochos.

negkoy and the raisin breads

nengkoy and her loots!!!

Of course our family’s usual trip to Tagaytay will not be complete without going to Mahogany Market to purchase the most famous and freshest local beef of the province.  The purchases done by Nengkoy is sooo plenty it felt like she bought one whole cow in that meat market!

???????????????????????????????

is it just me??? but there seem some eerie atmosphere inside this church…

Before proceeding with more purchases, my elder sister demanded that we pass by Tierra De Maria Heaven of Meditation and Enrichment.  Though very small for a church, it homes the majestic 50-foot image of Mother Mary.  Surprisingly the small room with low ceiling is filled with devotees and the walls with statues and statuettes of various saints as well as testimonies of Mother Mary’s holy intercessions.  Before I start melting and devotees start exorcism upon me, I demanded that we leave the holy place.

We then head to Rowena’s, one of those famous pasalubong-stop-over-stores in Tagaytay.  I can hardly determine the single English translation for the Filipino word “pasalubong”.  It is because this Filipino norm and convention of buying take home presents and giveaways is so Filipino.

pasalubong overload!!! inside rowena's store...

pasalubong overload!!! inside rowena’s store…

Will definitely be back to scenic Tagaytay…

The Word of the Day is UMAY

Living in a scorching and humid tropical country, I love it when it rains.  Rain is like a sweet dessert after a damn hot meal.  But being subjected to constant raining for the past five days is too much.  It’s no longer sweet and pleasurable.  It’s already like the horrible sickening feeling you get after a nasty food binge.

Thus, my word of the day is “UMAY” pronounced as “ooh-mai” meaning cloy or cloying.  After raining for almost a week this has been my general feeling.  No thanks to typoon Maring and the monsoon wind for being so stupefying.

It’s already nakakaumay, umay-peg and umayness.  But for the sosyal, classy and ostentatiously wealthy the feeling is nakaka-cloy, cloying-peg and cloyingness.

stuck and stumped inside my unit due endless raining for the past 5 days

I definitely miss looking at the moon and at the stars.  And I hope the dark clouds would give us a break and the great sunshine would finally show up tomorrow.

Sana bukas umulan… Umulan ng pera…

Epic Pornographic Fail

porno

porno

When the movie suddenly stopped and reeled on the credits, I felt blunt.  The people in front of me were already standing up and leading their way out of – CCP’s Tangahalang Huseng Batute – theatre, but I was still seating there trying to absorb and figure out what I just saw.

That is what I exactly felt when I saw the Cinemalaya 2013 Directors Showcase category entry entitled Porno.  I don’t know who or what was blunt.  I don’t know if I was the one who was so stupid I did not get what the movie wish to impart or if it was the movie that was simply dull and dreary it should be considered an epic fail.

I guess the director’s failure to string together the engaging tales of the three main characters was deliberate.  The failure to interconnect the key characters with each other in the film is typical of a real porn movie.  And I hate porn movies because of this usual and seemingly incoherent plot.  I can therefore say that I similarly hate this movie because of this.

With the excellent actors in Porno, the movie had its greatest potential to be one excellent film.  Rosanna Roces, Yul Servo, Angel Aquino and even the short stint of Bembol Rocco were effectively compelling.  Carlo Aquino only confirms that he is one great actor of his generation.  When his tale being a porn dubber by profession ended in the movie, I was still yearning that his character would pop out in the end.  If the writer and director effectively interlocked and inter-related the stories of the 3 characters, I would definitely have raves about the film.

But the movie as it is was like watching three slurring short films that were not connected with each other at all.  For me I’d rather watch the corny and clichéd yet entertaining Shake, Rattle & Roll franchise trilogies of Regal Films than watching an incoherent movie like Porno.

Epic peyl…
