Filipino is the Language of the Advantaged

After reading the full text and while we are in the midst of all rants and negative reactions from the recent article written by James Soriano (entitled Language, Leaning, Identity, Privilege) published in Manila Bulletin website, the first thought that entered my mind is that childish Soriano has yet to experience the advantage of speaking a unique language.

I think Soriano will only appreciate the Filipino language not by just reading the classic and one of the masterpieces of Philippine literature entitled Florante at Laura or by merely listening to the Filipino language calisthenics of Fliptop (the modern day Balagtasan in rap form) but by going out to tour another country with a fellow Filipino.

Filipino language can be a great tool for safety if you are out of the country.  One specific case in point is when I and a fellow Pinoy went to Morocco.  We planned to walk and tour the labyrinthine medina in Fez but when we arrived at the gate of the walled city, we felt a sense of danger of being mobbed.  I and my friend spoke in Filipino so that no Morrocan can understand what would be our immediate plan so as to be safe.  Still in Morocco, when we ride a jampacked train we would speak in Filipino to remind each other to mind our belongings from pick pockets.  In this way, we can continuously enjoy our journey by staying safe and cautious without the locals ever knowing that we are suspicious of some of the locals behind or in front of us.

When you are on tour out of the country, Filipino language can be a mode to blurt out over the top emotions of anger when the situation calls for it just to steam out your feelings without offending a local.  When me and my family went to Guangzhou China (as part of our Hong Kong tour package), the tourist guide led us to one of the bargain shopping malls.  In one of the electronic stores, I tried to haggle with a store attendant to lower down the price of a memory card.  The sales representative was a pain in the neck with his demeanor.  I did not buy the memory card and before I stepped out of his store, I shook his hand, smiled at him and told him “Gago Ka!”  The sales attendant was smiling at me when I left his store.

At the other end of the spectrum, Filipino language can be a mode to steam out your uncontrollable infatuation without embarrassing yourself towards a local without this people ever knowing that you are ablaze with their looks.  When I and a friend went to Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia we need to take a bus ride from the town of Katoomba.  As we get up the bus, my friend noticed that the Caucasian bus driver was strikingly good looking.  We sat on the available seats just behind the driver.  While the bus is running, my friend could no longer contain her scrutiny about the bus driver and told me, “Grabe HR and gwapo ng nagmamaneho.”  With her usual comical and mischievous nature she told me in her normal sounding voice, “Siguro pinkish ang titi nyan!”  We laugh out loud throughout the bus ride without the driver and other passengers knowing what we were talking about.

Now for Mr. Soriano, one piece of advice, get out of the country with a Filipino fellow and enjoy, realize and appreciate the advantages of speaking Filipino.  You will surely use your pandiwa, pang-uri, pang-abay, pantangi and panghalip.

Narnia is in Pasay

Though considered as the major gateway of the Philippines to the world, Pasay is one of the oldest cities in Metro Manila that has yet to turn around its bad image and reputation.  Mind-boggling traffic… squallid slums and squatters… horrible roads… ambulant vendors with unsanitary eateries… dirty politics… and of course garbage… Name it, my beloved Pasay has it.  This terribly polluted city has yet to change its impression to the public.

But boyoboyoboy, Pasay is where the magical world of Narnia is!  It is specifically located at Newport City Complex right across NAIA Terminal 3.

When you reach this highly urbanized city complex, it feels like walking into the magical wardrobe from a grim surroundings and then whoosh, you stepped into a portal to end up at a totally different spectrum!  It suddenly becomes a fairyland dimension of luxury, of high-end fashion and of lavishly-furnished space.

Me and Karen (my usual tour buddy) just had a delightful experience of a totally different Pasay.  We stayed overnight at the impeccable suite room of Maxims Tower; had sumptuous breakfast buffet at Impressions; had splendid Cantonese dimsum buffet for lunch at Passion; dipped into their elegantly styled infinity pool; drooled over the dazzling array of high-fashioned boutiques; and, won a couple of bucks at the grandiose casino.

Blown Away by The Lion King

me & nengkoy inside the sands theatre

I will no longer wonder why The Lion King (Musical) won seven Tony Awards in 1998 including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.  I, Nengkoy and a few of my relatives were able to catch and watch it in Sands Theatre inside the stunning Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.

It was actually the event that gave me the reason to journey back and revisit Singapore.  True enough the spectacular theatrical experience never disappointed us.  For a moment a sense of guilt came over me that the other members of my family weren’t there to enjoy the amazing and awe inspiring performance.  How I really wish that I can bring everyone there to see the glorious colors, breathtaking effects and enchanting music.

Aside from the spellbinding music and unbelievable visual stimuli of the set design and costumes, what I particularly like about The Lion King is the simple story line.  It is lighthearted and never preachy.  It does not attempt to move you to tears nor be subjected to an emotional roller coaster ride.  But ironically, the show nearly moved me to tears and gave me a delightful emotional roller coaster ride.  I was happy!  It is nothing but pure fun, genuine giggle and overwhelming enjoyment that would be best felt and experienced with the members of your family.

When the ensemble waved goodbye and the curtain went down right after the show, the uncontrolled words I uttered were… “I’m blown away!”

The Boy From Pasay Met The Boy From Oz

I along with Nengkoy and a few members of our family are excited to see the spectacular Lion King – The Musical in Singapore this coming weekend.  But before I write, praise or critique this tuneful show, let me reminisce the experience I had watching an enjoyable musical which, I fortunately saw when I was in Sydney a couple of months ago.

Australia’s iconic stage musical The Boy From Oz had a limited run at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney.  I and my friends were auspicious enough to have caught it.  The two-week run featured the amazing Todd McKenney who reprised his role as the legendary Peter Allen.  It was like watching Lea Salonga reprising her original role of Kim in Miss Saigon.

I did not expect too much from this musical but the spectacular show and the main character’s perfect high-kicks with poise and precision captured the bright spirit in me.  I was actually silently singing along while the show was running because almost all popular mainstream Peter Allen compositions were featured – Don’t Cry Out Loud; I Honestly Love You; Everything Old Is New Again; and, I’d Rather Leave While I’m In Love.

But personally the song I enjoyed most was not sung by McKenney but instead sung by the young Peter Allen played by Blake O’Leary entitled When I Get My Name In Lights.  While hearing the young thespian brilliantly sang and impressively struts his feet on the stage, it made me realize that I would definitely enjoy watching the rest of show as it progress.

The three Aussie friends I was with – Jesse, Jericho and Joesel – turned amazed and felt the ultimate Australian pride when the song I Still Call Australia Home was performed.  I could actually feel rare goose bumps were swelling out from their goose bumps.  While the same song was being sung by the ensemble and the high-spirited audiences were singing along, I on the other hand went so vulnerable for I wanted to rush to the nearest embassy to process the immediate conversion of my citizenship from gorgeous Pinoy to audacious Australian.  Good thing I did not have the time since I wanted to see how the story would end.

In a nutshell, the show was great, fantastic and very enjoyable.  I, the boy from Pasay had a pleasant experience seeing and meeting the Boy From Oz.

Italy is Two Hours Away from Manila

Being an urban dweller who presently works for a group of restaurants in Metro Manila, I never intended to look for it.  But I think I found the best Italian restaurant in the Philippines.  It is not located in Manila but can be found in Angeles, Pampanga.  Yes, the Pinoy palate capital of the Philippines is where the best Italian restaurant is located.

It’s simply called C’ Italian Dining.  They have the best and most unique pizza ever which they call Panizza.  A thin-crusted square hybrid pizza sliced in long rectangular cuts that would be best enjoyed if topped and rolled with fresh arugula and alfalfa sprouts.  The perfect harmony of flavors and textures of the dish was just like experiencing a great opera.  While eating my share of Panizza my bones were shouting “Bravo! Benissimo!!!” It’s no wonder we finished three whole pizzas in a matter of minutes!

It seems that the servers actually saved the best for last for they served us the best spinach ravioli and the unforgettable penne in chicken and parmesan cream sauce.  Both dishes were simply phenomenal.  The tastes were no longer mere flavors, but more of a lingering voice forever engraved in my mind.

Fattening, yes! But a small price to pay for such a delightful pleasure.  A bit of caution to all those who plan to drive all the way up to Pampanga and dine in this restaurant.  Be careful for you might get hooked, all your senses and even your soul will never forget the rich taste of C’ Italian Dining perfection.

Grabe! Kasing sarap ko ang pagkain doon!

Friends from the Land of Rainbows and Unicorns

surry hills, new south wales, aus

Almost on the last leg of our journey in Australia, we were inside a moving van heading back to Melbourne from the spectacular views of the Twelve Apostles in Victoria, me and Karen were asked by Jesse on which among the sights and adventures was the highlight of our 2011 Australian trip.

Everybody suspected that my stay in Gold Coast, Queensland would be my answer for I specifically broadcast how beautiful the people are and how amazing the place was in that part of the continent.  I even wanted everyone in the group to rather proceed in Surfers Paradise to spend the rest of the trip and drop the plans of going to Melbourne.

Everyone was surprised when I announced that my Gold Coast stay was just a runner-up.  I revealed that the highlight and most focal point of the whole trip was that actual moment.  The fun moment I was having inside that van with the complete people whom I consider to be very close friends – Joesel, Karen, Denton, Jerico, Charles, Gareth and Jesse.

The whole trip gave way for me to develop beautiful friendship with these beautiful people.  The geographical landscape and cosmopolitan setting of Australia may change, but the fact will remain that these people are true friends in every sense of the word.  My bonding with these people are definitely incomparable to the sights and adventures of The Land Down Under.  They made me feel that Australia is like a land of rainbows and unicorns…

Because of this, let me dedicate this short photo slide show that enumerates some of the various spectacular Aussie places that I have been to…

Pebbles of Poseidon

the twelve apostles

pa-cute!

While journeying the three-hour ride from Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles along the Great Ocean Road, I and my friends witnessed the country-side beauty of Victoria.  Prior to reaching the coastal highway of the Great Ocean Road, we witnessed the massive lush green fields with breathtaking views and sceneries of mountain ranges. I suddenly felt how the Von Trapp Family felt that I wanted to sing, all together now, The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Music…

While passing through the hills and mountainous green fields, we saw great quantities of hale and hearty Australian cows grazing through the hills.  Jesse yarned that the brown colored ungulates when extracted will produce chocolate flavored milk and asked us to spot for the pink colored ones since they ooze the strawberry flavored variety.

Upon reaching the arch that indicates that we have just entered the Great Ocean Road, everybody were ecstatic and could not wait to witness the world’s most scenic road.  True enough the coastline road covers the most incredible scenery that I have ever seen in my entire life.

And when we saw the Twelve Apostles limestone stack formations from afar, we were again literally shouting and giggling from excitement (kahit ihing-ihi na ang lahat).  When we reached our final destination (Port Campbell National Park), Charles – the impressive driver of the group – parked the van and we immediately headed to the board-walk tracks and viewing areas.

"ang apat ng sikat!"

The spectacular sight was one to behold!  Those pillars of stones were like pebbles of Poseidon beautifully scattered along the shore of Australia before sailing to another continent.

We couldn’t get over the spectacular sight and wanted to get closer to those limestone formations and be at the actual stretch of sandy beach that we headed to the actual edge of the cliff and descended the narrow Gibson Steps (a less-than-five-minute drive from the board-walk and viewing areas).

The spectacles of The Great Ocean Road, The Twelve Apostles and the Gibson Steps of Victoria in Australia were truly stunning!  We journey back to Melbourne happy and smiling… : )

Late for Australian Open 2011

Two months!  That is how late I was to witness one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the planet.

While in Sydney, planning our trip to Melbourne, I specifically requested my Pinoy-Aussie friends that I wish to see and visit the arena where the Australian Open is annually being held.  True enough on our second day in Melbourne, my dear friends granted my wish by catching a train and made a short walk along Melbourne Park.  We specifically went to the Rod Laver Arena, the center court of the recently held Australian Open.

obyus ba na atat ako? iniwan ko mga kasama ko ng milya milya

thanks to jerico for these superb photos...

We had the opportunity to enter and feel where the superstar players traverse leading to the court in which the walls are lined with pictures of past winners. I was ecstatic trying to control my happy feelings.  The excitement and thrill was more than the festive Jollibee kiddie party.

While inside the lustrous hallway, I severely focused my senses to verify the wall vibrations if there still subsists the reverberating sound of audience cheer from this year’s men’s finals between Murray and Djokovic.

i've written a lot about this legend in this blog. i'm a fan!

thanks guys... for allowing me to have this wish fulfilled...

Of course, me and my friends did not miss the chance to take souvenir photo shoots of this once in a lifetime experience.  A gazillion thanks to my Pinoy-Aussie friend Jerico for the great photos…  This is one breathtaking realization on my bucket list.

Giordano

Giordano as we all know is a Hong Kong giant retailer of men’s, women’s and kids’ apparel.  Their store is literally everywhere.  But when in Hong Kong, aside from the usual key chains and ref magnets that a typical tourist buys, a trip to a Giordano store is inevitable.

But with my recent trip to Melbourne I found a different Giordano.  Surprisingly, it is not a clothes store located along the sassy streets of Australia’s fashion capital but it was right inside the National Gallery of Victoria.  (Since Melbourne is considered the “cultural capital of Australia” let me be culturally-inclined in this particular writing)

I found a painting that enormously roused the synaptic vessels of my brain.  Executions of the visual elements as well as the symbols for each character portrayed in the painting were just overwhelming.  A great deal of metaphoric stories – may it be compassionate or evil – can be depicted and interpreted from this cunning work of art. It precisely fits its title “Allegory” a genius oil in canvass painting of Italian painter Luca Giordano.

Wow, ang sosyal ko na! Ching!!!

Glittering Gold Coast

A person’s social standing and size of wallet can easily be categorized based on the location of his room accommodation along the four-kilometer stretch of White Beach in Boracay Island, the foremost tourist destination in the Philippines.  It is an open secret that people staying at opulent Station 1 of the island belongs to the well-heeled spectrum of society.  Those staying at intermediary Station 2 are classified as people with middle-of-the-road riches while at Station 3 are those with slender means who went to the island bringing loads of cheap instant noodles.

This is totally different from what I’ve seen and observed during my stay in Gold Coast, Queensland. Australia’s one of the foremost tourist destinations.  Upon my arrival in the area, the first thing that entered my mind was that I was like in Station 1 of Boracay in a gargantuan metropolitan proportion.  The picturesque backdrops were spectacular, the high rise buildings and infrastructures were stunning and the greens were meticulously trimmed.

The more-than-thirty kilometers of holiday resorts and white sand surfing beaches are all Station 1 if to match it with Boracay.  This is not because all its inhabitants are filthy rich but because the place with like-minded people will truly impress any tourist may he be camping in a hinterland park caravan or staying in a beachfront luxury hotel.

Iwas lucky enough to stay in a service apartment in Surfers Paradise, the center of tourist activities in Gold Coast.  The city is so beautiful I was not able to take a short break from drooling.

The level of my amazement on Gold Coast even went colossal when Jesse, one of my Pinoy-Aussie friends, joined me later in the week to show me magnificent places that I never knew existed in this planet – the Main Beach area, the cosmopolitan streets of Broadbeach, the grandiose Palazzo Versace, the Pacific Fair and Oasis commercial centers, the Mariner’s Cove Marina and the long manicured stretch of esplanade from Manly Beach to Surfers Paradise to name a few.

Ibang lebel ang Gold Kowst! Maka-ipon nga ng limpak-limpak ng maka-balik.
