Ditumabo Falls After The Rain

Mountain trekkers know that waterfalls are at their scenic best when there has been rainfall.  That is absolutely what I saw and experienced in Aurora Province on the day I conquered the exhilarating green forest of barrio San Luis which nestles the beautiful Ditumabo Falls.

wow!

wow!

The first gait I made to accomplish this adventure, I simply let my cares drop like fallen trees.  I did not expect anything to gain with this specific venture.  I was merely trying to endure what needs to be endured during the whole time I was walking up the mountain.  Nevertheless, while pacing my initial strides, I was already feeling the freshness of the air kissing my cheeks, similar to how the cool streams of water kiss the thirsty lips of earth.

But as I further my trekking, I eventually felt the flowing of nature’s peace inside my being just like how sunshine flows into the leaves and branches of a tree. And as I further went up the trail, I was feeling the fresh energy of the whole forest.  I felt no pain, I felt no fatigue.  It was sheer delight and pleasantness.

And when we reached our destination, the sight of the dream-like forest mist, the look of the inviting jade-colored pool and the magnificent appearance of the robust stream of the waterfall, resulted to a total feeling of intense joy and happiness!

First Time Surfer

Not in my wildest dreams that I would be one with the waves.  The thrilling waves of Sabang Beach in Baler, Aurora Province is the site where I first learned and experience gliding on water.

While learning the basics on how to position my body and the technique on how to stand on top of the surfboard, I pity my tutor because he will have to squander tons of patience, immeasurable strength and lots of miserable time before I can finally learn to stand and ride a thrilling wave.

At my present age, in which my body is two steps behind my brain, I know that being a beginner sucks! And I have always accepted the fact that the whole Pacific Ocean would first have to dry up before I’d be able to learn how to surf.

And while acting out the necessary moves being taught to me by my tutor, I was also thinking that since it would be impossible for me to attain balance and be able to stand on a moving surf, I might as well enjoy the thrill and the feeling of my body crashing and splashing down the ocean!

But lo and behold, after just few attempts and immeasurable metric tons of salty water that I drank everytime I fell off the moving surf, I was already standing atop a gliding surfboard! I was like floating on air!

I can say that the experience was indeed pure fun!  It’s the ultimate feeling of joy out from accomplishing something that you never dreamed of in the first place.

I was so ecstatic, I even hugged my instructor when he approached me telling me “Good job!”  It’s that happy feeling of accomplishment that gives me a reason to visit back this thrilling side of the Pacific Ocean.

Brewing Excitement on the Next 2015 Adventure

One of the philosophies that I have long been observing is to maximize my existence and celebrate the gift of life no matter how simple life’s circumstances are.  I call it my “glorious ordinary”.

But this maximization and celebration of a simple life should not in any way impede on achieving my big dreams and ambitious aspirations.  No way would I “kick the bucket” and stop realizing my dreams or cease the fulfillment of my bucket list.

In the next couple of weeks, my “glorious ordinary” would have to temporarily be placed on halt because something big is about to happen to my life.  My next adventure would definitely be a fulfillment of one item in my very long and very ambitious bucket list… .

I am actually now excited and is already looking forward to my next adventure… Expect lots of posts about this journey.  For the meantime, here’s an Instagram post to announce where my next big adventure is going to be.

The First Sub-Zero Escapade

Now that 2014 is now officially a memory, my first 2015 out of town adventure is appropriately significant for it is with no other than Nengkoy.  Along with a few members of our family, we decided to have a two-week holiday to our family’s favorite country (next to the Philippines, of course) Japan.

hokkaido adventure starts now!

hokkaido adventure starts now!

This adventure will actually be our first sub-zero winter season adventure.  Being inhabitants of a tropical country with abundant vitamin D, we actually do not know what to expect.  What we know is that this adventure would be a lot of cold and freezing exploits.

The mere thought of mountains of snow already makes me feel so icy!  Hokkaido, here we come!

Rebooted by Pope Francis

A miracle happened in Luneta hours before the Holy Mass was about to be officiated by Pope Francis.  It was a miracle that involved me and my elder sister.  Both of us did not whine nor whimper about going to and from the people-infested Luneta right in the middle of the storm.  In fact, we both actually enjoyed it!

My relatives know that in case I am subjected to any discomfort, I whine and grumble to the highest level.  While my elder sister is the most cautious and the least adventurous in the family.  So if we are together, nothing really happens and everything seem so dull.

thank you santo padre...

thank you santo padre…

But not today.  I would like to claim that I and my sister were rebooted and were recharged by the visit of Pope Francis in Manila.  At exactly 12 noon, I, my sister and her son Luis converged at Vito Cruz.  In our respective jackets and rain coats, we walked our way heading to Luneta to attend a once in a lifetime Holy Mass in Manila by Pope Francis.  Both of us surprisingly did not complain nor felt tired nor whine about the long walk, the drenched feeling, the muddy puddles, the dizzying swarms of people as well as the cold and heavy downpour of typhoon thrashing above us.

And when we were heading back, we were actually caught in a throng of people crammed and tightly squeezed together.  People were so compact, it was like a wave of people.  You cannot just standstill because the wave of people would thrust you in varying directions.

I actually got nervous for my sister and my nephew for it really takes a lot of energy to survive the shoving force of such surfs of moving people.  The three of us got separated along the way after about 25 meters.  But when the crowd got a bit loose and no longer too crammed together, I found a concrete planter box and stood up to look for them.

Luckily, in about five minutes my sister saw me high on the planter box and headed towards me and then suddenly my nephew appeared smiling walking towards us.  My sister told me that she was pressed towards a group of old ladies while my nephew was prodded towards a group of young foreigners also attending the Pope’s pastoral visit in Manila.

At an ordinary occasion, I would have wailed, whined and complained.  While my sister could have simply passed out.  But we kept our composure and actually smiled and congratulated ourselves for surviving such a deadly throng of people.  We headed back home happy and feeling accomplished.

Now that I am writing this, only now that I realized that I would definitely will walk that far or get drenched that drenched or brave a smashing typhoon or subject myself to be crushed by hordes of people if it is in the honor of the Holy Vicar of Christ.

This experience is definitely nothing but a miracle.

Nengkoy Conquering the Rapids

Before Nengkoy and a bunch of her grandchildren headed to Davao (a southern city province of the Philippines) for a short vacay, I and my elder sister particularly told our adventuresome nephews and nieces not to subject their Lola (grandmother) to any hell raising thrill ride that they plan to take during this journey.

This specific order was put in place because every time Nengkoy and her grandchildren convene outside of Metro Manila they would often go for some adrenaline-infused adventure.  One particular exploit was when they went through some limestone caves in Palawan then capped it with a 330-meter zip-line ride.  Nengkoy then was already 74 years old.

And as expected, my adventuresome nephews, nieces and Nengkoy defied such orders.  Nengkoy now 77 years old further pushed the envelope when she conquered the white water rapids of the Davao river.  According to my nephews and nieces, Nengkoy was the oldest female rider who did the water rafting for this particular route.  And the oldest male rider is actually 3 months older than her!

Here’s one of those many scary obstacles during their adventure…

Nengkoy is the one who refuse to raise her paddle after the challenge!! Hahaha!

Taray! Lumelebel ap ang lola nyo!
