Speech at Alexis+Thatcher Wedding

The Wedding Reception Party of my niece Thatcher and new nephew Alexis is one of the coolest parties I’ve attended this year.  And in this gathering held at the Marriott Hotel Manila, I was given the task by the couple to render a speech (me being the representative of the family of the bride).

Before you read my speech here’s the cool pre-nup video of the couple…

Here’s what I said during the grand celebration of love…

Hi! I am Neil and I am one of the loving uncles of Thatcher, tonight’s lovely Bride.

Like what everyone knows, it is unfortunate that Thatcher’s dad (my brother) passed away when she was still a little girl.  I’m pretty sure that my Kuya Iko, Thatch’s dad, would be so happy now that she has grown up to be a fine woman and has finally tied a knot with a gentleman.  Kuya Iko must be smiling and watching up there in Heaven.

Thatcher grew up with her brother Denden who acted as her father figure.  It was always her Kuya Denden and at times Ate Erika whom she can count on.  Kuya Denden and Ate Erika are Thatcher’s significant human beings that made Thatcher the way she is today.  While I, along with my elder brothers Wreigh & Bogis and Ate Raquel’s elder brothers: Larry, Dennis & Nelson were her warriors if need be.

One of the most touching deed that Thatcher has done to me is a note she composed a couple of years back.  The note was part of a gift she gave me that Christmas.  I was touched when I read that note for it indicates how appreciated my being an uncle to her.  That note was one of the best gifts I received that Christmas and up to this day that note is kept in my treasure file.

The first time I met Alexis was in Japan.  Prior to meeting him, I have heard a lot about him from the stories of my Nanay Nengkoy, nieces Erika, KrisMae and Mica and nephews Denden, Luis and Miggy.  One big conclusion was derived from their stories, Alexis is a rich kid who does not seem to know anything about household chores.  Because of this pre-conceived idea, simple tests and challenges were concocted for Alexis during our family’s vacation in Osaka.  These challenges were simple household chores that Alexis needs to undertake, i.e. from fixing the bed, to taking the garbage out, to even washing the soiled dishes.

At the end of that vacation, my family all agreed that Alexis passed these simple challenges.  Though not with flying colors at least Alexis did his very best to get along with a crazy family like ours.  He even passed the test of eating his vegetables as insisted and enforced by his Ninang Gaying.  In my own personal analysis, the most impressive trait of Alexis is his being respectful.  During our first meeting, he automatically addressed me as Tito Neil.

To you Thatcher & Alexis, now that you are married, let me correlate my unsolicited advice with that of your recent pre-nup video.  Your prenup video was shot in Enchanted Kingdom, a theme park with various rides and attractions.  Please be advised that life indeed is like a roller coaster ride.  At times it may be like a happy ferris wheel or a nerve wrecking space shuttle ride.  There would be moments that life’s challenges may seem to be like a trip inside a horror house.  But you should always remember that no matter how hard and difficult trials may be, never stop falling in love with each other.  I’m pretty sure that life will simply be a breeze when you’re together like that of a gentle ride on a Merry Go Round. I hope that you stay together forever and live an enchanted-kingdom-like life ahead!  Congratulations and cheers to Thatcher & Alexis!

Sexy & Romantic Portuguese

There will come a point in our lives that we would fall in love with a song in which the lyrics are written in a foreign language not familiar to us.  I have been feeling this for the past weeks.  I have fallen in love not with one but with three songs.  And what is so consistent with these songs is that these are all sang in Portuguese language.

There must be something special in the Portuguese language when sung.  I don’t understand a single word of Portuguese but the emotion and sentiment of this language evokes something special.  It’s romantic, it’s amorous, it’s passionate!

The expressive phonology, the sensual structure of words, the voluptuous syntaxes and the almost nostalgic vowels accentuates the feelings of passion and romance.  Apaixono, cafune and saudade are examples of quixotic-ly structured kind of Portuguese words!  People say that the unrestrictive airflow of spoken Portuguese words makes it ideal for singing songs of love and longing.  Maybe these are the reasons why I easily fell in love with the following songs…

  • My nephew Luis was dancing to this tune the first time he heard it.  Efemera by Tulipa

  • I first heard this song in a superb Brazilian movie. Vagalumes Cegos by Cicero
  • The 2017 Eurovision winner from Portugal. Amar Pelos Dois by Salvador Sobral

These are the only foreign language songs in my Spotify playlist.  Some say its French, others say its Spanish, but for me Portuguese is the sexiest and most romantic language on the planet. Obrigado!

Bakit kasi walang letrang X sa wikang Pinoy? Ayan tuloy di tayo kaseksihan.

2017 Mudra Day: I Joined PAL’s Moments With Mom Promo

I joined PAL’s Mabuhay Miles Mother’s Day Promo.  Mechanics says that participant needs to post a photo with his/her mom in any memorable Philippine Airlines destination.  Chosen entry will win 10,000 mile-points and an overnight stay for 2 at Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar.

Though it looks like me and Nengkoy is not going to win because I saw the other entries and theirs were so stunning and beautiful, I enjoyed joining.  It’s a way I suppose of expressing how fun to be with her and that I am proud of Nengkoy!  This is my entry…

winning entry! hahaha!

happy mother’s day to all

I actually don’t need to win because having Nengkoy, my Mudra, in my life is the ultimate reward! Happy Mother’s Day Nengkoy!

At sa inyo din, hapi mudra day!

I’d Rather Listen To Elbow

The expensive Coldplay concert was recently concluded in Manila.  It was not surprising that it was jam packed and very successful.  It was Coldplay!  But I did not watch.  The reason is because I would rather see and listen to Elbow than Coldplay.  And like Coldplay, Elbow is a British band.

elbow (filipino translation: siko)

Elbow is one of the most underrated bands on the planet.  The difference between Coldplay songs and Elbow songs is that in the former, the songs would have to grow in you before you start liking it. But for the latter, while listening to their songs, you would instantly fall in love and instantaneously adore their music.

Elbow is the kind of band that sings lyrics and utter phrases that I thought would never be though abd uttered.  The notions of their songs are the type of thoughts that I would like to express that I can’t seem to construct inside my crazy and inadequate brain.  And because Elbow seem to possess such an amazing talent, I therefore like them.

Here’s a couple of songs of Elbow which for sure you would instantly fall in love with…

And while in the middle of the “famousity” of cloudfront.net in Facebook (which everyone seem to have downloaded so as to check who’s their celebrity look-a-like), here’s a hypnotic music video for the song Gentle Storm.  I was entranced watching the video, I thought I saw my face in it!  Hahaha!  And by the way, I so loved the lyrics especially the line,

Gentle Storm,

Range away

And fall in love with me.

Fall in love with me,

Every day

The song is so me!

I hope one day Elbow would be as successful as Coldplay because they indeed deserve it.  And I hope and pray that one day they would perform in Manila.  That would be one show that I would definitely gonna pay for.

Ito ang sikong gusto ko!

Bonggang Bonggambilya

I have always appreciated and been amazed by the blooming of flowers.  This is especially true if I happen to be touring abroad on a spring time.  I never had the appreciation of blooming flowers in the Philippines.  Maybe because we don’t have a spring season (we only have dry and wet seasons) and because flowers seem to bloom here at any time of the year.

But with my recent trip to Bagac Bataan at Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar, I was so amazed by the texture and richness of Boungainvillea (bonggambilya in Filipino), I could not resist myself from not having a photo with it!

bonggambilya ba kamo?

happy… pati tummy!

Kissed a Relic

national shrine of padre pio

One of the highlights of Nengkoy’s birthday celebration last week was my whole family’s visit to the National Shrine of Padre Pio located in Sto. Tomas Batangas (80 km south of Manila).  Except for my younger sister Joie, it was everybody’s first time in the church.

Before proceeding to the main church area all of us took time to roam and check out the grounds of the holy national shrine.  We even lighted a number of votive candles to give thanks and pray for some groovy and awesome intercession.

votive candles…. got myslef a green for health, nengkoy took a brown for birthday while nephew miggy got himself a yellow for money! hahaha!

smiling nengkoy with smiling padre pio

come holy spirit…

few of my monster nephews… denden, luis, kambal, neil and miggy

got to kiss this…

a super blessed day… (nephew alexis: a photo bomber hahaha!)

We failed to attend and listen to a Holy Mass but we were nevertheless lucky and were at the perfect time to have attended an awesome Healing Liturgy.  And part of the blessed ceremony is that people got to kiss a sacred relic of St. Padre Pio followed by an anointment of a fragrant oil on both palms and the forehead.

Though it initially freaked me out, because I thought my lips are gonna burn (hahaha!) when it touches the relic, the experience was something serene, calm and divine.  I definitely felt God’s blessings and Padre Pio’s embrace.

Visiting Padre Pio church in Batangas was one beautiful experience.  It was one blessed experience!

Mwah! Mwah!

Happy 80th Birthday Nengkoy

Theory in quantum mechanics has mathematically proven that an alternate universe subsists.  That similar us’s actually exists in those universes.  And if I would be given the choice, I would still want my mother to be my mother in that alternate universe.  Nengkoy no doubt has been such an awesome mother and she has turned 80 years old last March 3.

I was too happy to write a blog then.  And now that the elation has receded a bit, let me blow a shower of kisses and greet an awesome Happy Birthday to Nengkoy!

Public Charity, Yummy Jollibee & Inspiring Ingenuity

Craving for a Jollibee meal as my dinner, I proceeded to the nearest Jollibee branch, which luckily is just a walking distance from my flat.  Well, with the humongous number of Jollibee branches here in Manila, Jollibee is basically walking distance from where ever you may be in the metro.

While enjoying my burger steak with fries, rice and fried egg, a young, mild and reticent lady approached me and handed me a note.  Written on it says that she is selling Otap (a native flat sugary biscuit) amounting to 150 pesos per pack and pastillas (a Filipino-Spanish soft milk candy) which she sells at 50 pesos a pack. The note further states that she is selling these snacks to help support her studies.  Because the last statement written on the small piece of paper melted my heart, I immediately pulled out my wallet and purchased 2 packs of the Pastillas.

precious pastillas: a damn good buy!

precious pastillas: a damn good buy!

i craved for jollbee, i am so pinoy!

i craved for jollbee, i am so pinoy!

Why am I writing this when according to the Holy Bible under Matthew 6:2: “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, so as to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.” This means my act of simple charity was not impressive to the heavens because I disclosed it through this blog.  It’s even-steven in other words as far as the heavenly saints and divine deities are concerned!

If my writing this simple charity would make me less of a person, then so be it.  I am writing one modest charitable act because I would like to spread love, kindness and benevolence.  And I hope that through my simple act of charity others would somehow be inspired and follow.

I want to let people know that there are still plain and compassionate breathing human beings in public who are willing to help others.  Besides, that young lady was not difficult to be charitable with.  It is because she, in her own little way, is trying and striving to decently finish her studies.  And her impressive diligence and superb ingenuity on how to support her studies is something to be inspired about!

Oh, and by the way, that Jollibee meal was super good!

Dahil sinulat ko, okey lang kung kwits lang sa Langit ang pagtulong kong ‘to!

Three Beautiful Minutes

Have you lately been re-classifying people, re-assessing people or re-uniting with people?  Watch this, it will make you hate people less.

squares: unfortunately, that's were we put people

squares: unknowingly and unfortunately, that’s were we put people

in what other squares do you belong?

in what other squares do you belong?

It’s true and I definitely agree.  There’s more that brings us together than what we think.
