Dami Im Sings Classic Carpenters

I can still vividly remember the first time I owned a cassette tape of the Carpenters.  My father during my elementary days brought with him from Saudi Arabia (he was an OFW starting late-70’s) a Sony cassette player.  And along with the small player are cassette tapes of Tom Jones, Dianna Ross, Boney M, Don McLean, The Eagles, Carly Simon and of the Carpenters.  And that was my first exposure to the beautiful songs of the Carpenters.

Three and a half decades later, I am but glad and happy to know that Dami Im, now my favorite Australian singer, has a new album.  And it is her take, tribute and covers of one of everyone’s favorite, the Carpenters.

the next song is dedicated to myself… hahaha!

What I particularly love about the songs of the Carpenters are the tunes and melodies.  Each song are simple and unpretentious.  It’s unlike those grand and complex songs in which only few people could sing.   And though Dami has one magnificent singing voice, her rendition of the Carpenters songs were just lovely and uncomplicated yet very sophisticated.  The melody, the rendition and the tunes are easy and pleasant to the ear, I could listen to Dami Im’s Carpenters version all day.

Diwata Made Me Smile

Last night, to ease down my post holiday blues, which I think was caused by an awe-inspiring trip to Israel, I opted to switch on my Spotify and searched for a Filipino-Tagalog song.  I supposed a local-flavored tune would in some way ease my sudden drop of mind-set from a consistently exhilarating euphoria during my trip to significantly low levels of despondency upon my return.

While trying to search for some upbeat happy Tagalog tune which would hopefully try to bring me back to my senses, I happen to bump into a very charming and engaging song.  The song is entitled Diwata sung by Chito Miranda (lead singer of Parokya Ni Edgar band) and sizeable portions of the song was rapped by Abra. diwata by abra

I don’t remember when the last time I wrote or reviewed a Tagalog song.  But Diwata (English translation: Fairy) is totally something fresh and easy to the ear.  The message is not too sweet neither too tragic.   The lyrics may be profound and arduous yet the tune and jingle is adoringly unfussy and uncomplicated.

Diwata did not only make me smile.  It actually made me want to listen to it again and write about it!

Saang ilalim ba ng bato ako napatira at ngayon ko lang narinig anf kantang ‘to?

Boyfriend by Tegan and Sara

tegan and sara boyfriendThe music of Tegan and Sara has accompanied me for a significant amount of time during exhausting hours of workout in the gym.  This duo’s music is in my playlist blasting through my earpiece when I’m cursing the treadmill or gagging on some heavy weights.

Let me then show a little piece of gratitude by featuring their latest tune entitled Boyfriend from their upcoming album Love You To Death.

I particularly loved the gender twist in the lyrics as well as the dance-y 80’s-like vibe and groove of the tune. The supreme catchiness of the tune is super fun!  This will definitely be an awesome add-on in my gym music playlist.

Parang gusto ko tuloy mag-jim!

The Saddest Eyes of Eli Lieb

the heart-pricking stare of eli lieb

the heart-pricking stare of eli lieb

This is the very heartbreak ballad that I don’t want to sing ever!  But since the exhibited emotions of the singer (Eli Lieb that is) is so raw, this video then deserves to be in my blog.

Those eyes are the saddest.  You can actually see and feel that this guy is going through with something.  Try to notice his subtle sigh at the end of the video.  It happened in a split a second yet you can actually feel the intensity of sadness and sorrow when he blew air out from his mouth.  Such a glum and doleful moment.

I have seen a number of videos of Eli Lieb in the past but I haven’t seen how sad his eyes looks like like the way this beautiful video did.  If indeed his going through with something, I hope him well…

A Pinoy Looking Forward to Eurovision This Year

(photo captured from eurovision website)

Eurovision is a very popular song contest participated mostly by the members of the European Broadcasting Union.  Though it is widely popular even to non-member countries like USA and China, I, being an inhabitant in the southeastern portion of the planet is not keen and familiar about this contest.  News on who won in this prestigious contest would oftentimes be brushed-off in my country.

But for this year, I would have to go off a tangent.  It is because I am very excited to see the talented Dami Im on the stage performing this year’s song entry by Australia.  I am looking forward on seeing the dazed, dumbfounded and bewildered reactions of the audience after watching and hearing Dami sing. And I am most eager to witness how she would blow up the big stage in Stockholm with her amazing set of pipes during the night of the competition.

I have been a member of the Dami Army since day one of X Factor Australia 2013 (press the LINK for proof).  And for this year I would have to admit that I would be cheering for Australia to win.

Though Philippines is not a member and participant in this contest, let me then initiate the casting of the Philippine vote for 12 points to Australia.  Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi,Oi, Oi! Here’s this year’s Aussie entry as performed by the fantastic Dami Im…

Dami por da win… ‘yan na ang panalo!

My Proof of Purchase of the Rebel Heart Tour

the "iconic" number the would result to sensory overload!

sensory overload! i was too mesmerized to record this

Now that the Manila and Singapore leg of the Rebel Heart tour has been concluded, Queen Madonna right now must be prepping up for her concert in New Zealand.  But right here in Manila, the vibe and spirit of the concert still reverberates.

Everyone who were able to see the show here in Manila have posted their own video clip of Madonna performing in their respective social media account.  This is their “proof of purchase” for such a spectacular event!  Their video is their tool to prove that they actually have the bragging rights and make those who failed to see it go inanely envious.

Who wouldn’t brag about witnessing this event?  It so far is the most expensive concert ticket sold in the live-entertainment-event history of the Philippines!  Thus, it would be ridiculous not to take a photo or a video!

Now that I am reviewing the video clips that I took during the concert, only now that I realized that my videos were too short.  My video clips were too short because I prefer watching Queen Madonna not from my cellphone screen and I guess I was too mesmerized by her every performance that I was not able to record properly.

Therefore, as my “proof of purchase”, I won’t post a clip of Madonna performing, I would instead publish the most amazing concert interlude that I have seen!

This is what I took… Start to get amazed…

Kakamangha! ‘Yan ang gagawin kong prodaksyon namber sa darating na Krismas Parti…  Hahaha!

That Liberating Feeling Channeled by Queen Madonna

I may not be aware but as far as I know, I don’t curse.  Uttering expletives and swearwords is really not my cup of tea.  That is why while I was watching the first night of Madonna concert (Rebel Heart Tour) here in Manila I was surprised and was in disbelief by Madonna who generously peppered us with the “Mother F” words.  It initially felt awkward.

What is even more uncomfortable is that Madonna wanted us (the audience) to answer her questions in the affirmative by shouting “F@#k Yeah!” It was indeed super unpleasant at first.  But as the show develops to become more spectacular song after song, answering Madonna with such profanity seem so liberating.

I was like un-caged for a while and did not care who would react to such profanities that I was blaring.  And since everybody was in such a happy mood and because everybody else is doing it, no one cared, no one got offended and no one was hurt.  And that is the beauty of being able to scream out something that is unusual yet astonishingly redemptive and unshackling.

liberating aside from being spectacular!

happy!

happy!

My shouting “F@#k Yeah!” that night actually became a bit of therapeutic.  It is because I was luckily able to channel and vent out all my worries, anxieties and desperations in my screaming!  I did not seem to care what Madonna was asking her audience but when it was time to respond and shriek with the rest of the spectators, I was pouring out all my angsts!

Madonna’s Rebel Heart tour I guess lived up to the title of the concert.  My heart indeed became temporarily rebellious from the norm because my civility would seem fly out the window every time I shout to respond to the Queen.  But the cathartic effect of screaming expletives that night was really comforting in the end.  No, I did not changed by starting to utter expletives from now on,  but that night, I left the concert cheering and ecstatic yet deep within me I was feeling calm, quiet and free.

I don’t know if my troglodyte-like writing and relaying these thoughts makes any sense but my shouting “F@#k Yeah!” that night was indeed one unusual liberating experience!

Pak Ya! Hahaha!

It was all exclamation points in my thought bubble from the start to finish!  This is how I would describe my general feelings when I watched the Manila leg of Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour.  It was like a super blessing granted to me by the Supreme Being!

singing "La Vie En Rose"

singing “La Vie En Rose”

I have been a Madonna fan since the day I first heard the song “Everybody”.  All my classmates, all my friends, my colleagues, my relatives and of course Nengkoy knows this.  And ever since that day, I have been wishing from the heavens to grant me the royal opportunity to see even at least one of her spectacular shows.  I actually thought that this would never be accorded but I guess the Book of Secret is correct all along when it says “Nothing can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts.”

The Rebel Heart tour and finally seeing Madonna performing live would be the apex, the apogee and the culmination of my being diehard fan.

Long live the Queen!!!

A Song For The Person At The Final Gate Of The Last Mushroom Kingdom

It’s eight in the evening on a Thursday.  I am (again) alone with no intentions of doing anything except think of the last couple of decades.  Yeah, in the last couple of decades, I did not seem to have encountered the right timing for me to meet my supposed correct and destined significant other.

It may have been a lifetime, but this will not discourage me from constantly praying and hoping that the right one, in God’s beautiful time will simply arrive. And yes I guess, when it comes to love — same as when buying ice cream — some actually prefer to wait in line even if they can get the same thing from another store without queuing.

But waiting and working on this for the last couple of years seem to become quite more of a difficult task.  Each time I got to meet someone, work on a possible connection and ends up with nothing was like playing Super Mario Brothers all over again.  I was like the Mario (of the Nintendo arcade game) jumping on top of Koopa Troopas, breaking bricks and climbing flag poles, crawling through sewages and kicking Goombas only to be told at the end gate of the Mushroom Kingdom that the person I am looking for is in another castle.

And yet, may I already be on the latest Super Mario Galaxy Deluxe version or not in the stage of my life, I will not stop playing.  I will never stop wishing, I will never cease finding and I will never tire hoping until I meet that partner who is meant for me at the ultimate and final gate of the Mushroom Kingdom.

And when I got to meet that person at the final gate of the last Mushroom Kingdom I will definitely gonna sing this song…

ken ay bi yor…
