Diwata Made Me Smile

Last night, to ease down my post holiday blues, which I think was caused by an awe-inspiring trip to Israel, I opted to switch on my Spotify and searched for a Filipino-Tagalog song.  I supposed a local-flavored tune would in some way ease my sudden drop of mind-set from a consistently exhilarating euphoria during my trip to significantly low levels of despondency upon my return.

While trying to search for some upbeat happy Tagalog tune which would hopefully try to bring me back to my senses, I happen to bump into a very charming and engaging song.  The song is entitled Diwata sung by Chito Miranda (lead singer of Parokya Ni Edgar band) and sizeable portions of the song was rapped by Abra. diwata by abra

I don’t remember when the last time I wrote or reviewed a Tagalog song.  But Diwata (English translation: Fairy) is totally something fresh and easy to the ear.  The message is not too sweet neither too tragic.   The lyrics may be profound and arduous yet the tune and jingle is adoringly unfussy and uncomplicated.

Diwata did not only make me smile.  It actually made me want to listen to it again and write about it!

The Rustic Mornings in Marikina

During my childhood, my perception of Marikina is that of a faraway place from metropolitan Manila.  One of our neighbors in Pasay, Tita Linda and her family, were actually from this bucolic county.  And every time our family is invited by Tita Linda (one Nengkoy’s ‘mejor amiga’) to go to their place in Marikina for some party or gathering, the travel and journey seem so arduous and tiring.  I can still remember the exhausting hours it took for us to reach this green and tree-filled but faraway suburb.

During adulthood, the only time I got to Marikina (now a city and part of metropolitan Manila) was after the deadly flooding and wreckage brought about by the most devastating storm to hit Metro Manila known as tropical storm Ondoy in 2009.  I got the chance to go to Marikina then because the company I am working for did some charitable activity.  Our company prepared and distributed away hundreds of boxes of hot cooked food to the affected residents of Marikina, which was the most hardly hit area of that year’s deadly typhoon.  That memory was not a good one because Marikina that time was all mud, sludge and debris.

But just last Wednesday, I had a beautiful morning in rustic Marikina.  I was actually at awe because my childhood perception that it takes ages to get there has been erased.  It only took us 45 minutes to get there (from Malate in Manila).   And the ugly clutter brought about by the deadly Ondoy of course are all gone.  What’s present is a highly urbanized zone with remarkably clean roads and civilized communities.

The reason this time why I was able to get to Marikina is because of breakfast.  I and my colleagues decided to have breakfast at Rustic Mornings.

This restaurant can be considered one precious gem of Marikina.  The ambience is one-of-a-kind.  It makes you feel like you are not in crazy, hectic and stressful metropolitan Manila.  Once you entered their gate you’ll feel a sudden change in impression.  It’s quiet, calm and relaxed.  The restaurant is actually decorated with beautiful pieces of art and décor.  You would actually feel like being in a vicinity full of stunning and charming clutter.

But what is most important for me that morning was the food.  Rustic Mornings serve heartwarming and mouthwatering breakfast dishes in a suburban-like setting.  And from among the breakfast dishes that we ordered, I had two personal favorites.  The Crispy Waffle Churros and the Banana-flavored Pancakes.  These dishes are simply bliss!  The waffle churros was crispy outside yet heavenly soft inside!  While the pancakes I would say would be one hell of a pancake!  It was insanely delicious!

Because of Rustic Mornings, I can now say that I have a beautiful experience in Marikina.  This restaurant definitely gave me a reason to return back on a rustic morning in this rustic city.

My Proof of Purchase of the Rebel Heart Tour

the "iconic" number the would result to sensory overload!

sensory overload! i was too mesmerized to record this

Now that the Manila and Singapore leg of the Rebel Heart tour has been concluded, Queen Madonna right now must be prepping up for her concert in New Zealand.  But right here in Manila, the vibe and spirit of the concert still reverberates.

Everyone who were able to see the show here in Manila have posted their own video clip of Madonna performing in their respective social media account.  This is their “proof of purchase” for such a spectacular event!  Their video is their tool to prove that they actually have the bragging rights and make those who failed to see it go inanely envious.

Who wouldn’t brag about witnessing this event?  It so far is the most expensive concert ticket sold in the live-entertainment-event history of the Philippines!  Thus, it would be ridiculous not to take a photo or a video!

Now that I am reviewing the video clips that I took during the concert, only now that I realized that my videos were too short.  My video clips were too short because I prefer watching Queen Madonna not from my cellphone screen and I guess I was too mesmerized by her every performance that I was not able to record properly.

Therefore, as my “proof of purchase”, I won’t post a clip of Madonna performing, I would instead publish the most amazing concert interlude that I have seen!

This is what I took… Start to get amazed…

Kakamangha! ‘Yan ang gagawin kong prodaksyon namber sa darating na Krismas Parti…  Hahaha!

It was all exclamation points in my thought bubble from the start to finish!  This is how I would describe my general feelings when I watched the Manila leg of Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour.  It was like a super blessing granted to me by the Supreme Being!

I have been a Madonna fan since the day I first heard the song “Everybody”.  All my classmates, all my friends, my colleagues, my relatives and of course Nengkoy knows this.  And ever since that day, I have been wishing from the heavens to grant me the royal opportunity to see even at least one of her spectacular shows.  I actually thought that this would never be accorded but I guess the Book of Secret is correct all along when it says “Nothing can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts.”

The Rebel Heart tour and finally seeing Madonna performing live would be the apex, the apogee and the culmination of my being diehard fan.

Long live the Queen!!!

Manny Pacquiao Is One Serious Disappointment

With the present psyche of the Philippine society being backed up by extreme and ambiguous religious belief, I have long accepted the fact that legalizing same sex marriage in this country would be so remote.  Thus, asking a famous boxer and part-time politician in a country where the majority of its populace are unfortunately not in the side of reason, if he agrees or disagrees on same sex marriage is nothing but pointless.  The system will not change in case he agrees with same sex-marriage anyway.

There has been a lot of people who opposes same sex marriage but these people were prudent and human enough not to compare LGBT people to being inferior to animals.  And though I disagree with them, I respected these people’s stance. But what broke my heart was Manny Pacquiao’s cruel statement of comparing the LGBT to being worse than animals.

the proof of my being a fan. the personalized shirt i would use during boxing events of manny. i don’t know what to do with it now… its eating some precious space in my cabinet…

Manny Pacquiao uttering this insensitive and idiotic idea made my respect for him simply fade away.  My being a fan simply vanished out into smithereens.  He is definitely awful and is one serious disappointment.  To those who think that what he said was okay, I’m sorry to all of you because Manny himself know that he was mistaken.  He would not apologize if he knows that he was not off beam.

Yeah, he has apologized but sorry the emotionally wounding damage has been done and though it may heal (hopefully soon), forever will remain one ugly scar.

And from the last time I checked prior to Mr. Pacquiao’s atrocious statement, my married LGBT friends who are living in a peaceful and productive lives has not in any way hurt or even negatively affected the boxing and political career of Mr. Pacquiao.  I don’t see the reason why he would disappointingly hurt them then?

Haler Baler…

One measure to prove that a traveler is so fascinated by a holiday destination is when he experienced the wanderlust to come back.  It is the strong desire and the itching feeling of wanting to return and re-experience the stunning sights and striking sounds of such captivating destination.

I have done a lot of returning and re-experiencing of various spellbinding tourist destinations myself both locally and internationally.  And one destination that has recently been added up to this beautiful list is Baler.  In less than a year I am back visiting this countrified town of Aurora Province here in the Philippines.

What I particularly loved about Baler is that there are so much to see, do and explore.  And that every spot is so overwhelmingly beautiful.  Add to that are the surprisingly affordable restaurants and food establishments  that offers fresh, delicious and hearty meals.

To further substantiate that I am truly captivated by this place, I returned back with Nengkoy and my family for them to see and experience for themselves how much fun I had the first time I visited.  And true enough, Baler for the second time around did not fail to amaze the traveler in me.

Swooned & Captivated by the Sunset

After spending the whole afternoon at the mall with Nengkoy and family – watched a Filipino movie and have an early dinner treat – me and my nephew Luis decided to walk the three-and-a-half-kilometer distance from the Mall of Asia to our respective condo units in Vito Cruz.  I was actually in some way thankful that there was a traffic gridlock in our place and that taxi drivers refused to have us as passengers.  It is because on our way to our respective units, we instinctively slowed down, took photos and enjoyed this…

Capticating Manila Bay Sunset!

Captivating Manila Bay Sunset!

While walking the surprisingly breezy streets and intently listening to Luis about his school research/thesis, at the back of my mind I am realizing that appreciation for the beauty of nature is something that is innate and spontaneous.  Since it is instinctual, it is but a natural tendency for a person to stop, stare and be captivated.  It gives human beings a break from fretting over the past and a pause from worrying about the future.  Captivating beauty of nature makes you feel refreshed, relieved and revitalized at that very moment.

And for those who have been overridden by the acquired imperative of the need to be urgent, of the feeling to hurry up and of the thought to get things done immediately, I simply wish that you would someday take it easy and be swooned and captivated by the natural beauty of the sunset.

Have a Haircut or Shoot Your Face

new year 2016

photo not mine…

Call it silly, call it insane.  But it has been my personal belief and tradition to have a haircut on the last day of the year.  I don’t know, but it brings me luck.

Like the Chinese, I believe that having a haircut on the first week of the New Year also cuts off your good luck that you’re supposed to receive throughout the year.  That is also why I have a haircut on the last day of the year.  But since I am thankfully not Chinese, I observe this belief every December 31.

While having my haircut, the TV set is turned on inside the salon.  News about the statistics of stray bullets hitting innocent kids all over the Philippines is rising according to the news flash.

The tradition of igniting firecrackers to welcome the New Year is supposed to be for fun and supposed to drive away the evil spirits according to some baseless belief.

smoking gun

photo not mine…

But a pretty good amount of moronic people would rather fire their guns indiscriminately so as to create a loud sound without knowing the deadly consequence it may result to innocent people who would be hit by the stray bullet.  This thoughtless act is what is silly and what is insane!

While having my haircut, I then thought of the idea that these dim-witted people should instead aim their guns to their very own faces.  This would definitely reduce the number of evil spirits of this planet.

Have a safe and lucky New Year’s Eve celebration everyone!

Itutuk mo sa mukha mo para mabawasan na ang ibil ispirit. Hahaha!

Thanks Pia For Such An Awe Inspiring Gift

thanks pia!

thanks pia!

Christmas 2015 in my country, the Philippines, is merrier than the usual Christmases in the past.  Aside from festive, there is an overwhelming feelings of pride.  This is because, five days prior to the actual Christmas Day, me and my fellow Filipinos received a very special and awe inspiring gift.  It is the gift of being so proud to be a Filipino.

Thanks to the beautiful, witty and very regal Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, the Philippine candidate who won the 64th Miss Universe pageant!  Her winning the coveted crown which the whole country has been wishing, praying and craving for in more than 4 decades has made all Filipinos feel so proud, happy and jubilant.

It’s so awesome to be Pinoy this Christmas.  Thank you Pia for this awesome feeling!

Miss Universe Without Miss Philippines Would Be Like…

Can you just imagine if there would be no Miss Universe pageant in the world?  That world I guess must be simply turning quietly around the sun trying to live a normal planet life.

But can you just imagine if there would be no Miss Philippines candidate in the Miss Universe pageant?  That would be like watching the Super Bowl without the Halftime Show. Or it would be like watching a Floyd Mayweather boxing match.  Or perhaps, it would be like watching hit sitcom Friends without Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) in it.

Though Philippines has never won this pageant in the past 43 years, Miss Universe pageant remains to be the pageant of all pageants in this spot of the planet.  I no longer remember who the past winners were, but I certainly remember these funny reactions by my fellow Pinoys out from viewing their beloved pageant.

No other mega-popular sports event or reality-based contest TV viewers , I guess, have had reactions like these!

Come December 20, all Filipinos around the world will again be glued unto their TV sets with rapidly beating heartbeats hoping that their country’s candidate be finally crowned as the most beautiful woman in the universe.

Geym Na!
