A Senseless Airplane Recurrence That Makes Me Want To Pee

feeling excited in one of my travels...

feeling excited in one of my travels…

It’s my nth travel abroad yet my first time to the United Stated of America.  Statistics reveal that travelling through air has been the safest if compared to the number of accidents that has happened on water and on land.

Anyway, the reason I am writing this is because I just wanted to essay a mindless yet constant observation every time I am on an airplane.  Wonder what is it?

Here’s what usually happens…

Inside a commercial flight prior to take off passengers are busy with their own affairs and matters.  Some are saying a prayer, some are reading, some has gone snoring, some are on their phone expressing cheerio to a loved one left behind, some are taking each others photos while others are busy locating a slot where they could place their bulky carry-on luggage.

But what is so consistent as if it is an automatic occurrence every time the plane has actually taken off and the flight captain has turned off the seat belt sign, somebody among these passengers would stand up and proceed to the lavatory.  I don’t know why but this scenario of seat-belt-off-standing-up-proceeding-to-lavatory right after take off no matter if the airplane is full or half-filled has always been a recurrence in all of my flights.

It is so common, predictable and recurring that it actually makes me want to pee in laughter.  It is so common, predictable and recurring that if it does not happen, it worries me that something bad will happen.

Nakakamangha… nakaka-ihi!

My Next Trip: The Nation Of Diversity

Even if I rarely drink it, let this beautiful Coca-Cola ad be the prelude to my first of the many adventures I am looking forward to this year.  A gorgeous video that depicts the diverse faces, lifestyles, origins and colors of the most democratic and strongest nation in the world.  The nation that allows everyone’s voice be spoken and heard no matter what cultural background its inhabitants came from.

I hope my upcoming visit would be as warm and awesome as this video ad…

You must be surprised to hear the Tagalog line in the ad.  Well, here’s the complete song as translated in poetic Tagalog...

Now I am excited…

No Need My Dear HK Legislators

a photo from discoverhongkong.com

a photo from discoverhongkong.com

Legislators in Hong Kong need not put into law their impeding plans of withdrawing the visa-free access of Filipinos in their territory.  It is because I no longer intend to go there anymore.  Yeah, I have been to Hong Kong a couple of times but there seem to be no reason anymore to visit again.

With all the news of HK government being so “asar” (pissed off) with the Manila City government, the Manila police and the Philippine government as a whole due to the unfortunate Luneta shooting incident that killed a number of HK citizens, no Filipino in his right set of mind would want to tour HK.  People would have to slip me in a straight jacket, place me in a box and send me through door to door courier if you would want me to go there.

Last year, I actually declined an offer to go there for free, as in an all expenses-paid travel.  From airline ticket, to land transfers, to food, to hotel accommodation.  I chose to stay in lively Manila, be busy with my job and do something more productive instead.

I do not have the eloquence of an angel when I speak so let me be blunt when I say that Hong Kong lawmakers can keep their Pinoy-visa-free access to themselves.  To prove this further, even my nieces who will be gifted by my elder sister next year with a trip abroad after they have finished their respective college degrees will instead go to Singapore.  They initially planned to go to HK, but upon learning those distressing news, they themselves decided that it would no longer be smart for a Pinoy to go there.  This is apart from the fact that my elder sister no longer wants to spend her hard earned money to any business in HK.  That’s three less tourists for you next year…

People reading this may suppose that I am insensitive to the more than 160,000 Filipino workers in HK.  I guess, they need not worry because if their respective employers truly need them because of their efficiency, diligence, politeness and reliability at work (the typical Overseas Filipino Workers’ traits), these HK employers themselves would of course process and shoulder the expense in the application for Filipino workers’ visa. Besides, initial news points out that the visa-free access withdrawal plans would only be applied to Filipino visitors, meaning tourists (like me), not overseas Filipino workers.  Because if they would include our laudable overseas workers, their houses would turn filthy, their kids would have difficulty learning English and Disney in HK won’t be as lively and fun as it is.

I just hope that lawmakers in the Philippines would not reciprocate by requiring Hong Kong citizens to secure their respective visas prior to enter the Philippines.  That would be such an undiplomatic and childish move.  HK legislators can sulk in hatred and abhorrence all they want but we should let HK citizens enter and be made to realize that Philippines is actually a safe haven for them.  They need to understand that the people of the Philippines have not done wrong to the people of Hong Kong.  What they need is a paradigm shift and that the Luneta incident is a mishap that even Filipinos themselves would not want to happen.

Finally, I’d rather process a visa application going to other more interesting state or country than spend the same precious time, effort and money applying for a visa going to irate and fuming Hong Kong.

Inyo na. As in.

I Must Be A Thai In The Past

If reincarnation is true, I would like to believe that I am a Thai royal in the second to the last life before the one I am in now.  I am saying this because every time I am given the time, money and god-given opportunity to travel to Bangkok, Thailand I would always grab it.

And every time my silky smooth feet would land in Bangkok, I never miss the opportunity to visit the Grand Palace complex.  It is the very palace complex where the Kings of Siam reside in the past.

And every time I visit, The Grand Palace never ceases to amaze me.  Aside from having so much vitamin D because of the blazing heat of the sun, I am always at awe at the beauty, grandeur and magnificence of its colorful history, intricate designs and fabulous architecture.

A Cute Café For Overgrown Children

It was one café in Bangkok that I promised myself to write about when I get back to Manila.  However, it has been more than a week already but the only description that I could think about this café is that it’s cute.  That’s it.

I know “cute” is not an appropriate adjective to describe a café, a restaurant or any dining place.  But that’s the persistent thought that lingers inside my crazy shell.  And ironically, nothing else would crop out of mind to further describe it.

The place is called Mr. Jones Orphanage, a cute café whose theme was like a toy workshop adorned with adorable stuffed toys, miniature toy soldiers, a train track and giant wooden wheel-parts of a wristwatch.

At first glance when we passed through this adorable café, I thought it was a toy store.  But when we passed through again after shopping (inside Siam Center), we were like overgrown kids who could no longer resist to settle our big asses on the available seats.

Their menu was a dessert lover’s paradise.  They have wide selection of cakes, fruit pies, milk shakes and cookies.  I ordered a slice of orange cake plus a cup of cappuccino.  The cake was okay though I tasted better versions of it.  Nevertheless the cappuccino was superb.

All is Well and Swell at Novotel

Aside from the complimentary overnight stay and numerous discounts to various products and services, one distinct advantage of being an Accor member, for me, is that it pressures me to use it.  It compels me to book a room in one of their hotel chains located within Asia-Pacific otherwise my entitlement will be forfeited.

My being an Accor member gives me a reason to go on a holiday.  This is of course aside from my needing to de-stress from a very demanding job and my passionate craving to see and experience other culture.

This year, I decided to use my Accor entitlement in Bangkok, Thailand.  I stayed in Novotel located right at the vibrant city center and known as the laboratory site of modern Thai fashion, Siam Square.

Though Novotel Siam Square is not a new hotel, there is nothing shabby about it.  I was surprised myself that I actually loved this place.

It has an excellent location where restaurants, major shopping malls and modes of transportation are all within short walking distance.  The room with fast and efficient wifi facility was clean and was in good size.  The bathroom was just how I liked it — clean, simple and functioning.  The bed was so super comfy!!!

The staffs were graciously amazing.  I will go back and stay there again in a heartbeat if given the chance.  Novotel Siam Square has definitely gives me the reason to renew my Accor membership next year.

Why Nigh Tagaytay?

It’s an easeful short voyage out of jungle Manila.  I don’t have to purchase plane tickets.  And most of all I love the snuggly weather.

I and a few members of my family did a short getaway to cool breezy Tagaytay.  We were supposed to stay overnight but after a sumptuous buffet lunch at Bags of Beans Café & Restaurant that filled us to our respective alimentary rims… everybody agreed that the money to be spent in a luxurious hotel would be more appropriate to buy miscellany of foodstuffs that can be brought back to Manila.

That is the beauty of charming Tagaytay.  Being so near Manila, you can actually return anytime that you may want or back out from it if your nutty erratic and eclectic judgment wished so.

After lunch we stepped into the coffee shop portion of Bag Of Beans and purchase us bag loads of freshly baked (and still hot) loaves of raisin bread, a box of their special and very popular blueberry cheesecake and packs of buttered biscochos.

negkoy and the raisin breads

nengkoy and her loots!!!

Of course our family’s usual trip to Tagaytay will not be complete without going to Mahogany Market to purchase the most famous and freshest local beef of the province.  The purchases done by Nengkoy is sooo plenty it felt like she bought one whole cow in that meat market!

???????????????????????????????

is it just me??? but there seem some eerie atmosphere inside this church…

Before proceeding with more purchases, my elder sister demanded that we pass by Tierra De Maria Heaven of Meditation and Enrichment.  Though very small for a church, it homes the majestic 50-foot image of Mother Mary.  Surprisingly the small room with low ceiling is filled with devotees and the walls with statues and statuettes of various saints as well as testimonies of Mother Mary’s holy intercessions.  Before I start melting and devotees start exorcism upon me, I demanded that we leave the holy place.

We then head to Rowena’s, one of those famous pasalubong-stop-over-stores in Tagaytay.  I can hardly determine the single English translation for the Filipino word “pasalubong”.  It is because this Filipino norm and convention of buying take home presents and giveaways is so Filipino.

Will definitely be back to scenic Tagaytay…

Ta Prohm: The Jungle Temple

One common observation about the multitude of tourists I saw when touring Siem Reap in Cambodia is that 98% of all of them regardless of their race are very young.  They are the able-bodied, in shape and high spirited types of mortals.   Well I guess possessing these attributes would be an advantage to any tourist who would explore the wondrous sights in Siem Reap.

This is especially true when I and my sister went to the magical temple called Ta Prohm.  After being dropped by our hired driver at the eastern gate who told us that he will be waiting at the western side of the complex, I knew that exploring The Jungle Temple would require a considerable amount of strength.

Upon entering the gate and a 15-minute walk of a dirt road penetrating though the Cambodian jungle, we witnessed our first glimpse of a breathtaking out of this world sight.  Just when we thought we’d seen the best along came Ta Phrom and it blew us away!

It gives you the feeling that after being left to nature for hundreds of years, the jungle decided to take over the temple and make its presence felt by outgrowing the numerous parts of the temple complex with very huge stems, branches and roots gripping and embracing the walls.

Serenity of the Stone Faces

The Bayon Temple located at Angkor Thom, approximately 1.5 kilometers away from Angkor Wat is one of the two wondrous bonus sites I did not expect me and my sister would visit when we toured Siem Reap, Cambodia.

After visiting Angkor Wat, our hired driver cum tour guide drove and brought us to this equally spectacular ancient capital city of Khmer Empire.  The excitement started when our driver suddenly stopped and asked us to get out of the car and told us to walk our way at the south entrance gate of Angkor Thom.  He told us the he would drive ahead and meet us at the other side of the ancient yet massive gate.

Upon approaching the south gate of the walled-city, we were greeted by fascinating giant statues lined up along the both sides of the causeway wearing assorted facial expressions. My sister Joy immediately noticed that the statues at the left side of the land bridge looked more pleasant while at the right side were scary.  Upon my research the left side were considered gods (or devas) while the right side statues were demons (or asuras).

Before entering the massive stone gate in which the peak has four massive faces gazing into four cardinal directions, we could not resist taking our respective photos.  We saw our driver, got in the car and continued our journey inside to see and feel for ourselves the iconic Bayon Temple.

There are diverse versions on why Bayon was built.  Some say that it is because of the overblown ego of the King who ordered that it be built and the massive stone faces with enigmatic smile be based on his own facial features.  Others believe that the King dedicated Bayon to the universal god of compassion Avalokitesvara, thus, a testament of his deep spirituality.  I would like to believe it’s the latter.

Moreover, the sheer scale and intricacy of the bas-reliefs found on the walls of this temple is also something to marvel at.

i actually wanted to bring this home to nengkoy and hang it inside her house!

Whatever the real purpose in the building of this bizarre temple, the fact remains that gazing unto those stone faces some strange serenity, calmness and quietude is emitted beneath my being.

Khmer Cuisine at Café Indochine

When my family tours out of the country, it has been a habit that at least one of the meals to munch must be at a local high-end restaurant.  My family has always been a believer that one of the best ways to see the uniqueness of a country and its citizens are through its food.

In tow with this habit and belief, me and my sister tried Khmer (Cambodian) cuisine as our first adventure lunch in Siem Reap, Cambodia.  We simply found ourselves stepping up the sturdy wooden ladder of Café Indochine which is just across the street where our lovely hotel was located.

The inviting restaurant building actually looks like an old wooden Khmer ancestral house with beautiful Asian settings.  The overall ambience is laidback, relaxing and quite elegant.

Me and my sister ordered the table d’hôte menu at $15 per person.  These multi-course meals included the following…

A beautiful salad…

pomelo salad with crab meat

A soup made in Cambodian heaven…

The hearty main course… Surprisingly, me and Joy actually preferred the Amok Fish than the stir fried chicken considering that both of us are chicken lovers.  The Amok Fish made with aromatic kreoung sauce was light yet very tasty!

The exciting tropical dessert… I have munched on alcoholic cakes and chocolates as desserts in the past.  But this was my first time to try and taste an alcoholic ice cream.  It was such a delightful and unique experience.  Who ever thought of this deserves a medal.

Two more things that pleasantly surprised me was that the portions were excellently sized and the courses were served at an impressive timing.  Overall, everything served to us was beautiful and brilliant.    I and my sister concluded that Khmer cuisine is not intended to be spicy but instead crafted to be fragrant, zesty and flavorful.

May kanin yan, di ko na sinama sa piktyur.  Kakaiba di ba???
