A Failed Ambition to See Jimmy Fallon

One of the few failures I had when I was in New York was my unable to be part of the studio audience at NBC’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.  The awesome show has consistently and continuously been a source of viral videos.  The show which usually features fun celebrity games, hilarious yet witty comedic monologues, fantastic musical renditions and interview of A-list guests is taped and recorded in an NBC studio at the Rockefeller Center in New York City.

felt like an nbc celebrity...

feeling like an nbc celebrity…

It was a long shot of an aim to succeed anyway because I failed to reserve even a single ticket months before my New York arrival.  And I do not have the audacity to queue in line so early in the morning so as to be chosen as a standby audience hoping for the reserved ticket holders to die or meet an accident or catch some communicable disease so that they would not show up.

The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon is not shown in the Philippines, but due to the magic of the internet I got to see lots of clips and episodes of the show via Youtube.  My favorite thing about the show aside from Jimmy Fallon himself is that he gets the celebrities do fun things.  It lets you see celebrities being out of their element and in ways you’ve never usually see them.

And from what I have seen, Jimmy Fallon for me is the coolest breathing human being in America.  His hilarious jokes are spot-on.  He sings well, he acts well, he laughs at his feebleness and is indeed very adorable.    It actually doesn’t hurt that he looks way way better as compared to his late night show host predecessors.  In fact, if I am to marry a dude in America, I want that person to be just like Jimmy Fallon.

And since I obviously am a fan, during my New York journey, the nearest ways for me to get close to the endearing Fallon was this…

1.  I bought myself lots of Jimmy Fallon merchandise…

Stay Weird, Stay Different

Last year it was the Lupita Nyong’o who expressed her confirmation to every little child that no matter where they came from their dreams are valid.

This year my favourite Oscars moment is the speech by Graham Moore, winner of Best Adapted Screenplay for The Imitation Game.  His inspiring message of “stay weird, stay different” resonated to millions around the world!graham moore

After the thought has sunk in to the deepest portals of my brain, I suddenly noticed onions flying around my room!  That was such a powerful message!  I wonder how many young lives were saved that night.

Mary Jean Lastimosa, Philippines!

During the preliminary round of the Miss Universe pageant, MJ Lastimosa delivered very well.  She was a total stand out in both gown and swimsuit rounds.  A lot of fashion and beauty pageant experts say that MJ looks like she is the one to beat.

But what I was particularly impressed about MJ was the way she introduced herself.  She was unlike the other candidates who were looking too nervous or were embarrassingly screaming on the top of their lungs.  MJ was so graceful and sophisticated yet she sounded like she was in high spirits and evidently having so much fun.

Her introduction exudes confidence and was uniquely high class! Call it a new form or a fresh technique, MJ’s flair in her introduction was truly something for the books. I’m pretty sure future beauty pageant introductions will be based or patterned towards this elegant style!

Shifting the Cheering Gear from Pope of the Universe to the Queen of the Universe

Now that the Pope is back in his quarters, still feeling the grand euphoria he felt when he was here in the Philippines, it is time for the Filipino people to cheer again.  This time it’s for Mary Jean Lastimosa, the Philippines’ candidate to the upcoming Miss Universe pageant.

WOW! (photos taken from mj lastimosa fb page)

From the clips that I have seen, MJ Lastimosa no doubt is the embodiment of poise, grace, beauty and fun.  Her communication skills are formidable.  When she speaks, one can’t help but listen.  Her positive aura is like sunshine and delight to all those people around her.  I particularly love her bubbly spirit.  Her megawatt smile, her seductively graceful catwalk and knockout sexy body screams “queen”!

Come pageant day, all Filipinos worldwide will surely be glued on the television and will surely cheer for her.  MJ Lastimosa definitely deserves to bring home the crown!

The Sheer Epic-ness of Jeremy Jordan

This has been one entertaining YouTube video that I have been watching every night for multiple times for the past five days. I instantly became a big fan after watching this.  It’s funny, it’s impressive, it’s adorable and it’s obsessing!

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s give a big round of applause to the sheer epic-ness of Mr. Jeremy Jordan!

Rebooted by Pope Francis

A miracle happened in Luneta hours before the Holy Mass was about to be officiated by Pope Francis.  It was a miracle that involved me and my elder sister.  Both of us did not whine nor whimper about going to and from the people-infested Luneta right in the middle of the storm.  In fact, we both actually enjoyed it!

My relatives know that in case I am subjected to any discomfort, I whine and grumble to the highest level.  While my elder sister is the most cautious and the least adventurous in the family.  So if we are together, nothing really happens and everything seem so dull.

thank you santo padre...

thank you santo padre…

But not today.  I would like to claim that I and my sister were rebooted and were recharged by the visit of Pope Francis in Manila.  At exactly 12 noon, I, my sister and her son Luis converged at Vito Cruz.  In our respective jackets and rain coats, we walked our way heading to Luneta to attend a once in a lifetime Holy Mass in Manila by Pope Francis.  Both of us surprisingly did not complain nor felt tired nor whine about the long walk, the drenched feeling, the muddy puddles, the dizzying swarms of people as well as the cold and heavy downpour of typhoon thrashing above us.

And when we were heading back, we were actually caught in a throng of people crammed and tightly squeezed together.  People were so compact, it was like a wave of people.  You cannot just standstill because the wave of people would thrust you in varying directions.

I actually got nervous for my sister and my nephew for it really takes a lot of energy to survive the shoving force of such surfs of moving people.  The three of us got separated along the way after about 25 meters.  But when the crowd got a bit loose and no longer too crammed together, I found a concrete planter box and stood up to look for them.

Luckily, in about five minutes my sister saw me high on the planter box and headed towards me and then suddenly my nephew appeared smiling walking towards us.  My sister told me that she was pressed towards a group of old ladies while my nephew was prodded towards a group of young foreigners also attending the Pope’s pastoral visit in Manila.

At an ordinary occasion, I would have wailed, whined and complained.  While my sister could have simply passed out.  But we kept our composure and actually smiled and congratulated ourselves for surviving such a deadly throng of people.  We headed back home happy and feeling accomplished.

Now that I am writing this, only now that I realized that I would definitely will walk that far or get drenched that drenched or brave a smashing typhoon or subject myself to be crushed by hordes of people if it is in the honor of the Holy Vicar of Christ.

This experience is definitely nothing but a miracle.

I Think I Like Pope Francis

Because of a couple of hot-button issues that I don’t agree with the Catholic Church, I consider myself a “Catholic in bad standing”.  Though born a Catholic, I don’t even have a friend or even an acquaintance who’s either a Catholic priest or a nun.  Nevertheless, I participated in welcoming with huge open arms His Holiness, Pope Francis to my country, the Philippines.

one cool pope...

one cool pope…

I think I like Pope Francis.  I like him because he has an effective way of changing the public’s perception about Catholicism.  His tone is totally different as compared to a traditional, strict and highly conservative Catholic.

I think like him because he is not out in the world to evangelize the non-Catholics.  He is out of Vatican and visits parts of the world to re-evangelize the Catholics (like me) to reconsider the Catholic virtues of compassion, love and service to fellow human beings.

I think I like him because he is not the usual judgmental type of a Catholic.  He seem to be the type who would just let you be what you be as long as you mean no harm and it is in pursuit of love or of helping the poor.

I like him because he concedes to the idea that God shall be your judge at the end of the day and not those people with ostentatious robes running the Roman Catholic Church.

Lastly, I think I like Pope Francis because he seem to possess the power to warm hearts.  Through the feeling of warm hearts, this opens up people’s appreciation towards the beauty of Catholicism, the strength of Christianity and the love of Jesus Christ.

After seeing Pope Francis in person, I know what the phenomenon dubbed as the “Pope Francis Effect”.  Seeing him was like one of the coolest things.  It seem like an out of body experience!

A Wealthy New Year To All Of Us

I have something in common with Oprah Winfrey, Mark Zuckerberg, Hillary Clinton, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sofia Vergara, Bill Gates and even Kris Aquino not only this coming New Year’s Eve but even in the previous New Year’s Eves.  All of us, have not been lighting firecrackers during New Year’s Eve yet we are the rich, popular and powerful beings of this planet.

wealthy powerful people of planet earth

So if you think that producing deafening noise during New Year’s Eve like lighting a firecracker will bring luck and drive away undesirable spells and bad spirits, you better think again.  I hope you realize that even if you will light a nuclear bomb, no amount of wealth, power and popularity will come to you unless you work hard, persevere hard and stay focused on what you do and what you want.

You should realize that making noises should be made not on a literal sense.  But instead thunderous noise of diligence, progress and optimism should be produced in your heart in an uninterrupted manner all throughout the coming year.

A Wealthy New Year to all of us!!!

Riding The Jeepney: A Fulfilled 2014 New Year’s Resolution

Worthy grade school teachers taught us that precise goals must be SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bounded.  This very principle was one of the backbones when I set my New Year’s resolutions late last year.

And I am glad to convey that I am triumphant in accomplishing one of these resolutions.  That is, to discontinue riding the pricey taxi when going to and from my workplace.  And instead, settle for the more economical Jeepney ride.

Considered a cultural icon, Jeepney is a bus-like mode of public transport uniquely found in the Philippines

Considered a cultural icon, Jeepney is a bus-like mode of public transport uniquely found in the Philippines

It is actually only fifteen to twenty minutes by foot getting to my workplace.   This is why my initial goal/resolution was to walk daily to and from my office daily.  But because of the thick toxic air pollutants in Metro Manila as well as fear from tropical sun’s Vitamin D overdose, I settled on taking the Jeepney ride.

My ceasing to take the taxi this year actually has lots of advantages.  I no longer have to deal with ill-mannered opportunistic taxi drivers and experience those horrible circumstances:  (i) suffering from feelings of rejection after being declined by taxi drivers who refuse to have me as their passenger; (ii) enduring the stench of putrid taxi interiors or the reeking foul body odor of taxi drivers who opted to start their day without initially getting a good shower; and, (iii) feelings of being duped every time the driver would not hand me the exact change but instead compute change based not to the nearest ten but to the ‘next’ ten.

Aside from averting myself to all these stressful hideous encounters, riding the Jeepney gives me the sense of being grounded.  It somewhat makes me feel that my soul is aligned and so incorporated with the Filipino norm and culture.  Others may say that riding a Jeepney is so baduy (tacky) and so masa (for cheap lowly masses).  But for me, these people can have their fake and shallow elitist eccentricity with freaking lavish panache and let me and the rest of the Jeeney riding public have the biggest benefit of all.  That is the astonishing bargain of paying for a Jeepney fare and the savings that we can actually amass.  Tell me who doesn’t like bargain and I will smack the freaking grungy muffler of the Jeepney on his or her face!

To be exact, my taxi fare (on a return basis) would cost me around 140 pesos.  But the Jeepney fare back and forth is only 17 pesos daily (as of this writing has been lowered down to 15 pesos).  Based on simple mathematics, this accomplished New Year’s resolution saved me a staggering 29,520 pesos for the whole year.  This money is actually more than enough for a plane ticket if you’re journeying from Manila to Tokyo and back!  This amount in point of fact is actually more than a two-month-salary of a minimum wage earner in Manila.  And is actually enough to pay for my electric bill for six remarkable months!

To sum it up, my simple yet specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bounded goal and resolution which I triumphantly achieved this year was indeed worth it.  I am not saying that I will no longer be riding the taxi, what I’m simply saying is that my preferred mode of transport when going to and from my office is the Jeepney.  And until major changes happen to the “taxi culture” and improvements be felt regarding the taxi drivers’ urbanity in the Philippines, I plan to continue riding the ever reliable Jeepney in the next years to come.

Real Giving This Christmas by Save the Children UK

According to Mahatma Gandhi, “The simplest act of kindness is by far more powerful than a thousand heads bowing in prayer”.  That is why aside from trying to succeed in the 9-day Misa De Gallo challenge, let me encourage everyone to allot even a small portion of their Christmas blessings to charity.  I suppose you need not be told that even for a small amount, your donation will indeed go far and would help a lot of people.

I am not the best Catholic this Christmas Season so let me make up for my sins by helping others.  This Christmas, my chosen aid organization is Save the Children UK.  I know there is Save the Children Philippines but I chose the UK-based branch because I was so touched and was so moved by their YouTube advert for this Christmas season.  Entitled Real Giving This Christmas, the advert features Gerald a young boy from an impoverished town of my very own country.

What is very moving about Gerald’s story is his ability to give so much despite having so little.  His enthusing narrative along with a touching musical score of the video can indeed inspire and encourage people to share their blessings in whichever form it may be.

Do your soul some favor, you can donate to Save the Children UK by clicking on this LINK:http://www.savethechildren.org.uk
