I’d Rather Listen To Elbow

The expensive Coldplay concert was recently concluded in Manila.  It was not surprising that it was jam packed and very successful.  It was Coldplay!  But I did not watch.  The reason is because I would rather see and listen to Elbow than Coldplay.  And like Coldplay, Elbow is a British band.

elbow (filipino translation: siko)

Elbow is one of the most underrated bands on the planet.  The difference between Coldplay songs and Elbow songs is that in the former, the songs would have to grow in you before you start liking it. But for the latter, while listening to their songs, you would instantly fall in love and instantaneously adore their music.

Elbow is the kind of band that sings lyrics and utter phrases that I thought would never be though abd uttered.  The notions of their songs are the type of thoughts that I would like to express that I can’t seem to construct inside my crazy and inadequate brain.  And because Elbow seem to possess such an amazing talent, I therefore like them.

Here’s a couple of songs of Elbow which for sure you would instantly fall in love with…

And while in the middle of the “famousity” of cloudfront.net in Facebook (which everyone seem to have downloaded so as to check who’s their celebrity look-a-like), here’s a hypnotic music video for the song Gentle Storm.  I was entranced watching the video, I thought I saw my face in it!  Hahaha!  And by the way, I so loved the lyrics especially the line,

Gentle Storm,

Range away

And fall in love with me.

Fall in love with me,

Every day

The song is so me!

I hope one day Elbow would be as successful as Coldplay because they indeed deserve it.  And I hope and pray that one day they would perform in Manila.  That would be one show that I would definitely gonna pay for.

A Deserving Smash Hit of a Song: Bloodstain by Wrabel

Wrabel has yet to reach superstar status in the Philippines.  Only few people I suppose knows about him here at the other part of the planet.  I guess I’m one of the few lucky Pinoy souls who were fortunate to have discovered the poignancy of his songs.

I’m a fan and this dude deserves more.  Here’s his latest…

Impresib!

Katrina Velarde at Wish 107.5

Wish 107.5 is a Filipino radio station with a YouTube channel that features great singing talents among Filipinos.  It is a running proof and an amazing avenue to ascertain that Filipinos are among the most gifted when it comes to singing.

To prove a point here’s Katrina Velarde singing and nailing “Go The Distance” from one of my most favorite Disney movies Hercules.

rare talent, awesome talent

The original song was sung by Michael Bolton, but Katrina’s version is better by a whopping distance!  I actually needed a minute to recover from such an enchanting yet powerful voice. Her talent definitely deserves to leap a very long distance!

Mala-halimaw  sa galling ang babaing ‘to!

Unbelievable Pauline Agupitan Slays “I Believe”

I happen to stumble upon this young talent on YouTube.  And when I started listening to her, I realized that her singing voice is actually the quality of my voice every time I wake up suffering from a severe sore throat!

But seriously, I was stunned by this young Filipina’s amazing voice.  And what adds up to such a surprising rendition is that her singing seem effortless.  I am not a music expert but I know what a remarkable voice is when I hear one.  Her version of Fantasia Barrino’s I Believe is just perfect (or even better than the original, I suppose)!

Goosebumps were actually falling off my skin at the start of the song.  And these goosebumps started growing their own hands so as to give a humongous round of applause to such an amazing talent at the end of the song!

Stupidly Expecting for Dami Im

In my recent journey to New Zealand, I got to spend a very short period of time in Australia.  It is because my flight from Manila to Queenstown was via Sydney.  It was a 3 hour layover at the land down under.

While at the Sydney airport, I was ecstatic because despite the fact that chances of bumping into my favorite Aussie celebrity was like asking for the heavens to give me the greatest love life I don’t deserve, I was still positively expecting some mystic phenomenon to happen.  I was not expecting to bump into Kylie Minogue or Hugh Jackman nor Cate Blanchett or Chris Hemsworth.  I was not expecting Australians to bestow me a red carpet welcome.  I was not expecting the mayor to hand me the key to their city.  I was actually hoping to see Australia’s singing diva, Dami Im!

dami-im

dami was not popular yet during my visits in sydney...

dami was not popular yet during my visits in sydney…

I know it’s stupid but as soon as my feet landed on the grounds of Sydney, my bizarre and inexplicable hope for Dami Im to be at the airport!  And since I don’t have any photos to show, it means this longing did not transpire.  I guess the heavens was smart enough not grant such a wish, otherwise, I would not have left the airport in time for my journey to fresh Queenstown.

Let me just satiate and mollify this stupid wish by posting and listening to Dami Im’s latest single “Fighting for Love”.  I actually prefer Dami’s live performance during the X Factor TV show than the actual music video of the song…

Hey! Look and listen to who I discovered! His name is Wrabel.  I don’t know if he’s an indie or a mainstream artist.  And I have yet to look and listen into his body of work.  But one thing is for sure… I love his single entitled “11 Blocks”

I peeped into Wrabel’s Facebook and found this poignant and soulful expression on his page…

tonite i quite literally set the past on fire.

ready to move on.

ready for change.

ready for new.

ready to leave for this tour and ready to share these songs and these stories and my head and my heart with whoever will listen.

hehe this is a bit dramatic.

Listen to 11 Blocks before everybody is singing it and before this song blows out of proportion.  I really like this and I hope you do too…

Ten Silly Thoughtless Years

Ten years.  That’s how old this bloody blog is gonna be on Monday, June 20.  It’s 3 years that I ran this blog over Friendster (a defunct social media site) and seven years powered by WordPress.  It’s been ten years of silly and imperative writing, meaningful and thoughtless expressions, fun and boring adventures.

cheers!

cheers!

I know that though ten years old, this blog has yet to become massively popular.  But popularity and making me a big time blogger is really not my objective of writing what I write and wrote about.  I am in fact responsible in half of the views of this blog!

Nengkoy, the blog, is simply about who and what I am.  This little space in the worldwide web has actually been an avenue to reveal some senseless, trivial and pointless secrets about me.  Thus, here’s the tenth year anniversary song of this blog.  This song is sooo me…

No I’m not gonna stop blogging yet.  But let me thank all those who find time reading my posts.  And I hope that though you’re not learning anything from it, you nevertheless been enjoying it.  Cheers!

Sampung Taon ng Kalokohan! Salamat sa lahat…

Could Have Been a Magical Damivision

I woke up at three and got my ears pregnant!  That is after watching the intense and high-valued production numbers of 42 countries competing for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016.

Though I am gutted because she did not win, I am very proud of Dami Im for making it to second place.  She actually garnered a landslide of a vote from the international jury, which is 50% of the votes.  How I wish I was at the arena for me to witness how shocked and sputtered the crowd have been after Ukraine was announced the winner.  Ukraine’s entry was neither the top choice of the international jury (which went to Dami) and neither the viewers’ choice (which went to Russia).dami im eurovision 2016

I personally feel that Dami should have been the winner!  She clearly was the one to beat.  For me, close second would be Sweden (super nice song that is easy to the ear) then followed by Lithuania (such a danceable track!).

Dami’s entry was awesome!  The song was great, the production was awesome, the high fashion overall look was impeccable, the megawatt voice was enchanting and Dami’s radiating charm and multi-cultural background is what Europe needs. Eurovision this year could have been a magical Damivision.  And the news headline could have been “Australia Invades Europe!”

Anyhow, Dami clearly won the hearts of Europe!  Massive congratulations Dami Im!  One Pinoy member of the fierce Dami Army here is no doubt so proud of you.

Dami Im’s Sound of Silence Sounded like the Sound of Success

photo grabbed from dami im's fb page

The sixty-year old Eurovision Song Contest is literally an unknown here in the Philippines.  Though it is watched by more than 300 million viewers around the world, news about it here in the Philippines would usually run for a short five to ten seconds.  It is merely just to announce who was declared the winner.  News about Eurovision (if ever it actually post interest among local TV networks) is basically like an entertainment-news-filler so as to stretch the news program here in the Philippines.

But for this year, I am one of the very few Filipinos who is very excited about the upcoming Eurovision Finals this year.  It is because Dami Im, my favorite Aussie singer with a megawatt voice made it to the finals!

I couldn’t contain my happiness when I learned through her Facebook page that she got through the finals.   When I read this news, I dropped everything and started searching for her performance on Youtube.  And when I found the video, I had my phone’s sound on a full blast!

Hear the ear-splitting reaction of the crowd… they were actually singing along… I had goosebumps everywhere while watching this…

While watching her perform, I suddenly wanted to move to Sweden so as to cast my vote!  Dami’s performance during the semi-finals was absolutely amazing!  She slayed it!  Her Sound of Silence song seem to already sound like a sound of success in this year’s Eurovision!

Penomenal ang lola mo!
