Ramen Zundo Ya: The Best Ramen Ever

One great test to determine if a restaurant and its dishes are truly superb is through the guests’ impression on his or her return visit.  It is very common for a restaurant to receive raving reviews on the first engagement.  But almost often, guest becomes disillusioned on their return because they realize that their ordered food – which they totally enjoyed during their pilot visit – was nothing but a fluke or a strike of luck.  In Tagalog, tsamba!

But with my recent visit and return to Ramen Zundouya located at Shisaibashi in Osaka, I can definitely say that this joint serves the best ramen in the universe.

During my first visit (click: HERE to read my previous post), me and my family were easily led inside and was given a table with such a breeze.  However, on our return, we already have to queue among the long line of patrons waiting for their turn to be assigned with a table.  We were actually listed 13th among those who enlisted to dine that afternoon.

While waiting and drooling on line, my personal claim that this indeed is the best ramen house was actually an understatement.  To prove a point, I in fact noticed one big poster on the wall announcing that they have mushroomed around Japan.  To further prove my point, Ramen Zundouya’s flavor will soon invade America.  It is because a Ramen Zundouya shop is due to open a branch along 10th Street in New York next year!

To check the consistency of this restaurant, I again ordered for the same dish I had during my first visit, the Zenbu-nose Ramen.  When the bowl was served in front of me, I was absolutely surprised because the presentation and the arrangements of all ingredients placed in the massive porcelain was still impeccably beautiful.

And when I had my first sip of the broth/soup, nothing actually changed!  Nothing changed because the world seemed to stop for a moment for me to savor the paradise-like flavor of Zenbu-nose Ramen.  This matchless concoction was without a doubt an invigorating assault in all of the senses!

Nengkoy & I: A First Travel Tandem

Thanks to Muslim’s tradition of observing the Feast of Sacrifice, Monday has been declared a non-working holiday in Manila.  Since it will be a long weekend and we both possess multiple entry visas, I and Nengkoy decided to go on a short trip to Osaka, Japan to visit my dear nephew Denden and pretty nieces Erika and Thatcher.

This is gonna be the fourth time that I will be travelling with Nengkoy in Japan.  However, this will be the first time that only I and my mother will be travelling in tandem, this is because in the past we would usually be accompanied by hordes of members of our family.

I don’t know how things would go out.  I don’t know who between me and Nengkoy will lose patience first.  Members of my family are actually worried.  They think our travel tandem is like mixing Skittles and M&Ms in one bowl.  Same shapes and colors but totally different whiffs and flavors.

Prior to this trip I have been told by my sisters to pack with me oodles of patience, as if I am really to observe the upcoming Muslim’s Feast of Sacrifice.  Likewise, my sisters forewarned Nengkoy to completely observe conduct at all times during the duration of the travel if she don’t want to be left right in the middle of the journey.

Even if both of us have tremendously fierce personalities, one thing is sure though.  This is going to be one fun and memorable voyage.

As of this writing, everything seem to be doing well.  As a proof, here is a photo of our stylish shoe selfie – which by the way has the same color tone – while at the Manila airport waiting to board the plane.

Osaka Food Porn & My First Sazae Experience

Call if favoritism, but I would like to believe that Osaka Prefecture is the culinary capital of Japan.  This is the main reason why I gained so much weight!  When in comes to food,  Osaka has yet to fail me.

With my limited exposure to the dashing and colorful culinary world of Japan, I have been so fascinated by the colors and taste of lovely Osaka.

To prove my point, here are some awesome photos of food taken right at the streets of Osaka.  The mere stunning looks of these digestibles already produces mild sense of euphoria.

To add up to such already fascinating feast for the visual sense, I went further by becoming more adventurous.  This is because I tried for the very first time a Japanese delicacy called Sazae or the Turbo Shell.  At first, I was just fascinated on how plenty it was being sold on the side streets, until I set aside the wussy in me and urge my niece Erika to try it for ourselves.

Sazae is a big sea snail (as big as that of Dyesabel’s “kabibe”) cooked by directly grilling the shell with its meat inside.  A little amount of liquid is poured inside the shell that is why it boils the meat while being grilled.  Sazae is totally different from the usual French escargot, the latter are land snails while the former are deep sea snails.

When I picked the meat out from the shell, I must admit that it was pretty gross looking.  Upon seeing it, I thought of eating and swallowing it quick the Fear Factor way, but I gave Sazae a chance since I planned to blog about it.  I chewed on it and try to savor the palatal treat.

My first Sazae experience  was not something like reaching the pinnacle of pleasure.  It is because its taste was something to be used to.  It is of the salty-bitter kind.  It would be more of an acquired taste that would eventually grow in you.  I guess it would be best if guzzled and washed down with a sparkling wine or an ice cold beer!

Ippudo Ramen: A Very Good Second Best

Though heat is intensely shimmering in Metro Manila, hot ramen eateries and restaurants at the moment are experiencing some renaissance in this mega city.   Like Trader Joe’s Speculoos Cookie Butter spread in the past, ramen dishes today are a craze in this part of the world.

Since I am spending a fab holiday in Osaka, I will definitely not miss the enormous chance to eat ramen in this metropolis (at least twice).  That is why, I coerced my family to eat again in a ramen house.  This time we searched for the ramen joint that is pretty popular in Manila.  It’s the Hakata Ippudo Ramen restaurant located just a few meters away from the Swissotel in Namba, Osaka.

I proved the popularity of this restaurant in the Philippines because when we reached the ramen house, there were considerable number of Filipino tourists queuing waiting for their turn to be seated.  It was further amplified when it was our chance to enter the establishment.  I noticed that about 80% of their guests were Filipinos.

Like what I did in Zondouya Ramen restaurant a couple of days ago (read my post about Zondouya HERE), I settled for the most expensive and biggest photo dish on the menu.  Surprisingly, my order called Akamaru Special is pretty similar to Zembo-no, the ramen I enormously enjoyed in Zondouya.

My ordered Akamaru Special ramen also contains sheets of nori, soft-as-butter pork, freshly cut negi, a soft boiled egg, caramelized onions and garlic, plus a generous amount of “straight” noodles.  (in Zondouya, I went for the “curly” variety.)

The speed and quality of service rendered by the staff in Ippudo is as fast and as charming as that of Zondouya.  However, when my Akamaru Special was placed in front of me, the first thing I noticed was the presentation.  I straightforwardly uttered, “In terms of presentation, one point for Zondouya!”

I could no longer resist my comparing when I started stirring and mixing the ingredients in my bowl.  Before I uttered another word, I internalize and justified that comparison is one of the fundamental processes of the human mind.  And we define things in terms of their similarities and differences.

I then uttered in a pretty loud voice, “In terms of thickness and full-bodied-ness, another point for Zondouya!”  My nieces and nephews indisputably agreed with me.  My niece Erika seated beside me expressed that Zondouya’s Zembo-no looks richer while Ippudo’s Akamaru was runnier in terms of thickness.

Now the taste.  Tactlessly speaking, I articulated saying, “In terms of taste, another point for Zondouya!”  Some Pinoy guests at the waiting area and nearby tables were starting to look at me, as if wondering what ramen was I comparing Ippudo’s version with.  Nevertheless, I voiced out that Ippudo’s slices of pork were smoother and actually melts in the mouth.  I uttered, “one point for Ippudo for the softness of the pork, nonetheless!” The Pinoy guests looked down onto their bowls and resumed their munching.

But the softness of the pork could not counterweight the enormous savory taste of Zondouya’s broth.  Like a lot of ramen experts, I have always believed that the success of a ramen dish all depends on the palatability of the broth.  A lot of ramen connoisseurs would even do massive research and experimentations just to achieve the perfect broth.  For me personally, Zondouya’s broth formula is truly magical.  Ipuddo’s version nonetheless is very good.

To simply conclude my comparison between Ipuddo and Zondouya, I personally requested to meet the chef in the latter while for the former we stepped out of the establishment happy and thought to myself, I should celebrate differences.  That not all things are equal, some things needs to be less pretty so as to further appreciate others beauty.

Since Japan has such an excellent train and subway system, it is always such a breeze to go around. That is why while staying in Osaka, I and my family decided to go to nearby Kyoto for a third visit.

Many bloggers and world travel enthusiasts voted this place as one of the fifty places that a person should go to before dying.  I could not agree more!  I am actually honored and humbled and slightly freaked out when I was given this beautiful opportunity to be in such a breathtaking place.

The Sagano Bamboo Forest in Arashimaya, Kyoto is one breathtaking spot in this planet.  A sense of serene tranquility permeates from this lush bamboo scenery.   While traversing the narrow path, it felt like Mother Nature was giving my whole delicious body a warm comfortable hug.

The enchanting sound of the bamboos swaying back and forth against the light wind is something to behold.  It was like listening to an angel singing while feeding someone else’s soul. I was not surprised to know that as per amazingplaceonearth.com, this enchanting music-like-resonance is a must-be-preserved sound in Japan as declared by the Japanese government.

A Savory Ramen Experience at Ramen Zundo Ya

Flavors were exploding in my mouth and my taste buds were giving a standing ovation shouting, “Bravo!”

These are the general feelings when I had the first bite and first sip of the ramen I tasted at Ramen Zundouya Restaurant located in Shinsaibashi, Osaka.  Since I can’t read kanji, I selected the dish with the biggest photo.  Since it was the biggest picture in the menu as well as the most expensive one, I supposed that Zenbo-no Ramen is this restaurant’s specialty.

True enough, my selection was impeccably right.  The Zenbo-no ramen came with freshly cut negi, some absolutely melt-in-your-mouth pork slices, slips of nori, a full soft boiled egg and a good sized serving of “curly” noodles.  Generous amount of garlic cloves are provided on the table which can be freshly crushed using a unique garlic press. But what is so heavenly about this dish is the magic broth that the restaurant uses.  The rich savory broth flavor simply bursts in your mouth!

The feelings induced by this perfect ramen were excellently joyful and heavenly.  For a moment, I forgot my name and thought that I was having an elated out of body experience.  Zembo-no Ramen in so rich and explosively delicious my taste buds thanked me!

Ramen Zundouya’s website indicates that their first aim is to “captivate the customer with each ramen dish”.  This aim absolutely hit me.  Never in my restaurant-dining experience was I so impressed with the dish that I personally asked to meet the restaurant’s chef.  I was so captivated that I asked for his name and even topped it by asking for a photo with him.  I could not resist to thank him for such an awesome masterpiece.

A lot of friends and colleagues who has been to Japan agrees that the taste of Coca-Cola seem different as compared to other parts of the world.  And I do agree with this observation.  For me regular Coke or Cola in this part of the planet seem lighter to the taste and smoother to the gullet.  It is not disturbingly sweet and not unnerving to the tongue.  I can actually drink a regular coke in this part of the world without the need for ice.

What is even more fun drinking Coke in Japan, particularly in Osaka is that you can actually have your bottle personalized.  Located at Grand Pronto Mall, Osaka’s new mega-shopping town complex is a Coca-Cola store where you can have your name stamped on the bottle label for free.

While my bottle was being stamped, I was imagining on top of a hill and wanted to sing the popular Coca-Cola jingle… I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing (a Perfect Harmony).

My body had changed, my sensibilities changed, though to this day, I still drink Coke.  Admit it or not, but there are lots of chows, cuisines or simple sustenance best consumed with a bottle of Coca-Cola.  I guess, no one is too old to drink this precarious drink.

Charmed Again by Charming Osaka

Being a third timer in Osaka, I can therefore conclude that this charming city never ceases to amaze me.  The place positively radiates character.  Aside from the beautiful weather what I particularly like about Osaka is the almost perfect harmony of old and traditional Japan standing side by side with the contemporary cosmopolitan Japan. On this third journey I finally realize that Osaka people indeed are less busy, more down-to-earth, less starched, more carefree and (as I personally observed) laugh louder compared to the other people of Japan.

And since I work for a group of restaurants and I love eating.  Osaka is heaven for people like me.  Food is always to die for in this part of the world.  Osaka people I guess must have the happiest taste buds in the planet.

Tokyo I know is the front runner of Japan in terms of business, tourism and commerce.  But Osaka is like a younger sibling to Tokyo.  The one who would not boast about his flair and beauty but when opportunity comes to present his, you will simply be enchanted by its gift and endowment. Osaka is the relaxed younger brother who is fresh, cool and hip.

Because of all these, it can be said that this infectious Kansai city is a good representation of Japan to the world.

A Not So Long Letter To Anderson Cooper From A Not So Big Fan

Dear Anderson Cooper,

anderson cooperFirst of all, I would like to welcome you to my dear country, the Philippines.  Secondly, let me tell you that I am a fan.  Not a big fan but still a fan.  I admire your captivating appeal, from your uncontrollable giggles to critical life-threatening reporting on TV.

I know the reason why you’re here is because of your assignment of being a news correspondent sent by TV giant Cable News Network (CNN) to report live from where the heart of devastation of typhoon Haiyan took place.  You obviously have travelled around, but have you ever realized that countries other than yours would not want you stepping on their very soil?  The reason for this is because it blatantly means that there is serious mess in that state.  And because of your unbending guts and gallantry in reporting, CNN has always been assigning you to the most distraught and distressed places and situations.

Though I have always thought that it would be interesting to meet you personally, I personally at the same time would not want seeing you in my country.  It is because if you’re around, that only means my country is fucked-up and there truly is deep trouble around.

But since you’re already here, let me weigh in on what you have recently reported on CNN about your observations about the onslaught brought about by the super typhoon Haiyan.

First, you arrived in Tacloban five days after the devastation and was disappointed and stunned to see that there seem to be no clean-up and relief efforts given to the people of the province.  Second, you compared the Visayas typhoon devastation to that of the Japan tsunami tragedy in which clearing and relief efforts were promptly carried out.  You reported that clearing operation in Japan started right away and on the second day, there was already food feeding program for the victims.  Also, you expressed with so much compassion that my country has long been suffering from corruption as orchestrated by the officials and workers in the government.

Let me just tell you that I wanted to stand and give you a deserving round of applause and shout “Bravo!” when you stressed  the last item I enumerated above.  Thank you for expressing in such a potent fashion what I have been longing to express.

However, it’s too bad to know that you seem to fail to have asked your CNN resident meteorologist on which is more devastating.   Is it the Japanese tsunami or the Philippine typhoon Haiyan?

To put things more in perspective, tsunami is a destruction composed only of strong water element while a storm surge is a mix of intense water and powerful wind elements.  Typhoon compared to tsunami is a totally different animal Mr. Cooper!  To further prove my point, the tsunami in Japan did not flowed crossing the whole nation.   But for super typhoon Haiyan, it first touched down on land then crossed the whole length of the country from end to end.  It is so deadly, that after passing through the whole width of the Philippines, it even crossed the whole width of South China Sea and again wrecked havoc in China and Vietnam.

From this, which do you expect Mr. Cooper suffered harder?  You can ask your networks meteorologist if you’re not satisfied or got confused with my explanation.  Thus, since the latter is more destructive, which do you think is harder to clear and harder to reach?

Another thing to bear in mind is Japan’s devastated area’s accessibility as compared to the problem of accessibility of Tacloban.  First, since Tacloban was harder to clear, therefore its harder to reach.  Just correlate this with the speed of you going to Japan with that of the time it took you to reach Tacloban.  You said that you observed on the second day after tsunami that feeding stations are carried out in devastated areas in Japan, thus, it only took you 2 days to go there but 5 days before reaching Tacloban.

Mr. Cooper, you also failed to review your Google Map.  It was such a waste of time and effort that it was downloaded from your mobile phone if you’re not gonna use it.  If you will check, tsunami did not reach land areas that are further away from the sea, thus, immediate help can come from these unaffected zones.  But mind you, Tacloban is a “peninsula” (a land projecting out into a body of water) in the beautiful island of Leyte.  Google Maps indicate that three fourths of Tacloban is surrounded by water, so just imagine the massiveness of destruction.  And it is not Tacloban that is only affected.  It’s the whole island of Leyte.  No! Not just Leyte but the whole of Visayas region of the country from east to west.  Thus, there is no nearby “unaffected zone” that can provide immediate help and relief to those affected.

Yeah, I know you have the right to get angry, disappointed and frustrated by what you have witnessed.  I’m pretty sure you know that neither the Filipinos did not want what you have seen and witnessed.  You are a superstar guest of this country and we don’t treat our treasured guests that way.  But due to natural geographical make-up and the unfelt-before deadly might of typhoon Haiyan which was attributed to climate changes happening in the planet – whose primary contributors are the powerful countries like your country – our supposed immediate efforts we admit was left to a frustrating slow-phased struggle.

I’m sorry but even though I admire you, I think I believe what the local lady newscaster who said that you actually don’t know what you’re saying.  Lastly, I don’t mean to be rude, but except in case you have plans of great romantic vacation in some of our divine beaches here in my country, I hope your work-related official business of going to the Philippines would be the first and last.  Therefore, you’re welcome to go back to the Philippines not for business but only for leisure.

Mixed Feelings For The Inevitable Fashion Expansions

When Cotton On of Australia and Uniqlo of Japan almost simultaneously opened their respective first branches here in the Philippines, I had mixed feelings.

I was happy that these very affordable clothing lines will now easily be accessible.  And I do not have to go out of the country or ask favor from friends whom I learned will be vacationing abroad to grab me a piece or two of these clothing brands.

But at the same time learning that these retail stores are now in the Philippines, I can’t get over the thought of everybody will now be wearing what I was once uniquely wearing in the past.  Yeah, call me madamot (translation: selfish douchebag) but in the past when only few Pinoys were wearing these brands, it made me feel a bit privileged in the unique yet obtuse sense of it.

That is why when I went to Osaka Japan last spring, the majority of my fashion-acquisition ventures were from clothing stores that are not yet selling and retailing in the Philippines.  I had Bershka, GU and H&M.

However, mixed feelings came over me again when I learned that Bershka of Spain is now here in the Philippines.  I guess, Philippines truly is one massive market that must be tapped by these trendy global retail clothing stores to grow and expand.  It’s the inevitable.  This is even precluding the fact that Pinoys are starting to become trendy, hip and stylish.

Thus, to show my appreciation that Bershka is now in the new Glorietta in Ayala Center Makati, this is where I had my last week’s retail therapy.  Though Bershka is a bit too young for me, I was nevertheless happy with my loot.
