Thanks Pia For Such An Awe Inspiring Gift

thanks pia!

thanks pia!

Christmas 2015 in my country, the Philippines, is merrier than the usual Christmases in the past.  Aside from festive, there is an overwhelming feelings of pride.  This is because, five days prior to the actual Christmas Day, me and my fellow Filipinos received a very special and awe inspiring gift.  It is the gift of being so proud to be a Filipino.

Thanks to the beautiful, witty and very regal Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, the Philippine candidate who won the 64th Miss Universe pageant!  Her winning the coveted crown which the whole country has been wishing, praying and craving for in more than 4 decades has made all Filipinos feel so proud, happy and jubilant.

It’s so awesome to be Pinoy this Christmas.  Thank you Pia for this awesome feeling!

A Michael & Madonna Megamix

beat it, bitch i'm madonnaI’m not a fan of Michael Jackson but watching this remix/mashup music video makes me wish that he was still alive.   This is one superb work by Robin Skouteris.

I never wondered whether these songs would mix so well together.  This is genius!  Seeing the late Michael Jackson and the very much alive and bitching Madonna now could have been one great event that this planet would experience.

Enough with the wishful thinking!  Just beat it bitch and hit the play button!

A Leisurely Walk at Strawberry Fields, Central Park

In my short stay in New York, I can confirm the rich diversity of people and culture that exists in that place.  No need to go to a restaurant or the high–end 5th Avenue or even Broadway to feel this.  By riding the subway you easily could witness the various race, color and ethnicities present in New York.

Because of this assortment and thick individual differences, there is no one common look for a New Yorker.  Everybody looks, sounds and smells different, which is actually refreshing.  The only common character that I observed among all New Yorkers is their “walk”.  New Yorkers walk fast!  Their gait is wide.  Their stomp is strong.  Their pace is fast.  It is so fast I wonder if New Yorkers know the concept of strolling.

But there is a spot in New York where leisurely walkers exist.  These walkers – which includes me – however are not New Yorkers but instead the mesmerized bunch of tourists of the state.  This is at the Strawberry Fields in Central Park.

Considered as Central Park’s “quiet zone” Strawberry Fields is a 2.5 hectares living memorial to singer, songwriter and Beatles member, John Lennon.  The name obviously was derived from the popular Beatles song “Strawberry Fields Forever”.  Also, the spot was chosen because of its proximity to Lennon’s home, the Dakota Apartments (where he was shot and died), which was just across the west side of Central Park.

One focal point of Strawberry Fields is of course the “Imagine” mosaic, which is another tribute to the legend John Lennon.  My slow paced walking in the park even becomes more relaxing, peaceful and meditative when I saw and heard a musician seated on a bench, playing a guitar and was singing a Beatles song “Let It Be”.

I was just but happy to have leisurely walked the grounds of Strawberry Fields.  That part of the park indeed has “nothing to get hung about”.  It was peaceful and very relaxing.  It was one short diversion from the fast paced walking and full packed happenings I was having in New York.

A Failed Ambition to See Jimmy Fallon

One of the few failures I had when I was in New York was my unable to be part of the studio audience at NBC’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.  The awesome show has consistently and continuously been a source of viral videos.  The show which usually features fun celebrity games, hilarious yet witty comedic monologues, fantastic musical renditions and interview of A-list guests is taped and recorded in an NBC studio at the Rockefeller Center in New York City.

felt like an nbc celebrity...

feeling like an nbc celebrity…

It was a long shot of an aim to succeed anyway because I failed to reserve even a single ticket months before my New York arrival.  And I do not have the audacity to queue in line so early in the morning so as to be chosen as a standby audience hoping for the reserved ticket holders to die or meet an accident or catch some communicable disease so that they would not show up.

The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon is not shown in the Philippines, but due to the magic of the internet I got to see lots of clips and episodes of the show via Youtube.  My favorite thing about the show aside from Jimmy Fallon himself is that he gets the celebrities do fun things.  It lets you see celebrities being out of their element and in ways you’ve never usually see them.

And from what I have seen, Jimmy Fallon for me is the coolest breathing human being in America.  His hilarious jokes are spot-on.  He sings well, he acts well, he laughs at his feebleness and is indeed very adorable.    It actually doesn’t hurt that he looks way way better as compared to his late night show host predecessors.  In fact, if I am to marry a dude in America, I want that person to be just like Jimmy Fallon.

And since I obviously am a fan, during my New York journey, the nearest ways for me to get close to the endearing Fallon was this…

1.  I bought myself lots of Jimmy Fallon merchandise…

66 Perry Street, Manhattan

the "now-iconic-apartment" address

the “now-iconic-apartment” address

66 Perry Street, Manhattan is my most desired apartment destination on my on-going New York adventure.  This is because this is the very address where an open-minded and independent New Yorker with unique fashion sense lives.  Her name is Carrie Bradshaw.

66 Perry Street, Manhattan is the very apartment where Carrie would write the various relationship spectrums she would deal with in life.  These relationships would focus on herself, her colleagues, the people of New York and of course her friends.  Their names are Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha.

66 Perry Street, Manhattan is the very apartment where deep contemplations were carried out.  It is also were the moments Carrie’s happiness as well as loneliness were assessed.  This is where the complicated and entangled situations with the love of her life are pondered upon.  His name is Mr. Big.

66 Perry Street, Manhattan is the now-iconic-apartment where I and a young friend Amiel (sweet kikay niece of Jhong) went to so as to take a photo of ourselves to prove that we indeed were big fans of the movie and tv sitcom series Sex And The City.  Other apartments were equally gorgeous (if not more than gorgeous) and were without the restrictions to step on the stairs.  Channeling our inner Sex And The City vibe,  we of course took the chance to pose and take some photos…

Living For Love by Madonna Featuring Ellen

I am a huge fan of both Madonna and Ellen.  These two ladies would definitely be on top of my list for my most favorite Americans.

Here’s one awesome performance by the Queen of Pop featuring Ellen!  The funny intro and the cute ending made me chuckle… I love it!

Stay Weird, Stay Different

Last year it was the Lupita Nyong’o who expressed her confirmation to every little child that no matter where they came from their dreams are valid.

This year my favourite Oscars moment is the speech by Graham Moore, winner of Best Adapted Screenplay for The Imitation Game.  His inspiring message of “stay weird, stay different” resonated to millions around the world!graham moore

After the thought has sunk in to the deepest portals of my brain, I suddenly noticed onions flying around my room!  That was such a powerful message!  I wonder how many young lives were saved that night.

The Amazing NPH Hosting Oscars 2015

I love American TV show awards night.  Aside from awaiting the exciting announcement of winners and listening to heart-melting speeches, what I look forward to American TV show awards night is the opening number.  Opening numbers has always been one highlight dynamite.

This year’s Oscars is no different.  Just look at those visual effects!  It’s freaking amazing!  It actually even became more special because it is hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.  My most favourite awards ceremony show host on the face of the earth.

And here’s the reason why David Burtka is the luckiest man alive!

I Think I Like Pope Francis

Because of a couple of hot-button issues that I don’t agree with the Catholic Church, I consider myself a “Catholic in bad standing”.  Though born a Catholic, I don’t even have a friend or even an acquaintance who’s either a Catholic priest or a nun.  Nevertheless, I participated in welcoming with huge open arms His Holiness, Pope Francis to my country, the Philippines.

one cool pope...

one cool pope…

I think I like Pope Francis.  I like him because he has an effective way of changing the public’s perception about Catholicism.  His tone is totally different as compared to a traditional, strict and highly conservative Catholic.

I think like him because he is not out in the world to evangelize the non-Catholics.  He is out of Vatican and visits parts of the world to re-evangelize the Catholics (like me) to reconsider the Catholic virtues of compassion, love and service to fellow human beings.

I think I like him because he is not the usual judgmental type of a Catholic.  He seem to be the type who would just let you be what you be as long as you mean no harm and it is in pursuit of love or of helping the poor.

I like him because he concedes to the idea that God shall be your judge at the end of the day and not those people with ostentatious robes running the Roman Catholic Church.

Lastly, I think I like Pope Francis because he seem to possess the power to warm hearts.  Through the feeling of warm hearts, this opens up people’s appreciation towards the beauty of Catholicism, the strength of Christianity and the love of Jesus Christ.

After seeing Pope Francis in person, I know what the phenomenon dubbed as the “Pope Francis Effect”.  Seeing him was like one of the coolest things.  It seem like an out of body experience!

Maligayang pagdating po sa inyo…
