The Wishing Toe of Atlas

I happen to bumped into one quirky superstition while reading articles and editorials online about Russia’s cultural capital, St. Petersburg.  One irrational belief by the locals is about the magical powers of the huge and hard-to-miss Atlas sculptures near the Hermitage, one of the striking and imposing symbols of this lovely city.

The Sculptures of Atlas has been around since 1848 and surprisingly stayed standing even during the bomb-filled events of the Great Patriotic War.  Because of obtaining only minor damage during the war, locals reaffirmed on the unorthodox mystical nature of these sculptures.

super massive sculptures of atlas! look at how small people has become at the lower left portion of this image.

proof! hahaha!

People now would troop to these sculptures to touch the toes of Atlas which is believed to bring protection to those who rub it.  Also, locals and tourists alike come to the area to hold the big toes of Atlas because it is believed that it will bring good luck as well as make their wishes come true.

I actually got the chance to pass by three times in the area.  And three times did I go up so as to touch the wishing toe of Atlas.  One actually already came true prior to touching the wishing toe.  It is the awesome blessing sent by the heavens of seeing, feeling and smelling the charming city of St. Petersburg, Russia!

Here’s a video slideshow of photos & clips I took during my exploit with the Sculptures of Atlas.

Free Entry at the Grand Winter Palace & the Hermitage

Craving, salivating and hankering.  These are the major emotions and sensations that builds up when I had to control myself from entering the Winter Palace and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

Though just a stone throw away from my hotel, I had to postpone my entry into the former winter residence of Catherine the Great as well as the world’s second largest art museum.  I had to wait and properly time myself so that my entry would basically be FREE and complimentary.  Thus, in the first few days of my stay in St. Petersburg, I was left to drool and gaze outside the magnificent palace.

I was lucky enough that my journey to St Petersburg, Russia fell on the 3rd week of the month.  And very few tourists know that on every 3rd Thursday of each month, entrance to the Winter Palace and the Hermitage is free.  Thus, I had to wait and postpone my visit for me to avail of the free entry.

i was one with the locals

grand!!!

majestic!!!

And when the 3rd Thursday of the month arrived, I was one with the multitudes of people who patiently lined up so as to get inside the famous palace.  And what is so amusing and amazing about my queuing and falling in line is that I was with the many locals who well-planned their visit.  I guess only the locals knew about the free entrance.

I was unlike the usual and clueless tourist who paid for their expensive ticket online so as to cut through the queue and enter right away.  Patient and unwearied locals lined-up were actually telling me (in broken English) to simply show my printed online ticket to the guard so that I can pass through and enter the palace right away.  I simply smiled and told them that just like them, I am without a ticket.

regal!!!

imperial!!!

opulent!!!

And upon entry, you would really feel the true sophisticated Russian vibe.  Its aristocracy, its grandness as well as the splendor of Russian elegance indeed resonates within the walls and exhibits of the Winter Palace and the Hermitage.

A Beautiful Place in that Side of the Planet

Di ba nakakatakot? A question if translated in English would be “Isn’t it scary?”  This is the very question I often hear and receive from people and friends who found out that I have recently been to St. Petersburg, Russia.

Well, my usual answer would be… “It is a beautiful place in that side of the planet.

who wouldn’t want to smile with such a blessing?

Here’s a glimpse of my Day 2 at St. Petersburg.

Rebooting My Notion About Russia

I have been watching so much American movies and reading so much American novels that my preconceived idea about Russians is that they were the antagonist.  These has always been the grand old tradition by American movies and novels  that resulted to my brain’s default that Russians are the nemesis, the traitor, the spy and the infuriated.

jet-lagged, tired and hungry (didn’t felt all that after having a glimpse of the St Petersrburg Square)

All these notions and impressions were completely wiped out from my awareness when I got to step and venture into the Russian soil, Saint Petersburg, that is.  Russians from my new appreciation are just quiet, unobtrusive, calm and subdued.  They are not the smiling kind like my people or the gregarious like the Americans, there seem to be calmness in their core that makes you be so intrigued on what they are thinking and what they really feel.

I know I just spent more than a week in St. Petersburg for me to totally dissect and explore the Russian psyche.  I had a limited exposure but at least my initial unfair idea about the Russians has been totally purged and eradicated.  Russia and their people are beautiful.  And because of this new understanding of the Russians, I will definitely be back in this fine-looking country.

Here’s a slideshow video of my first day in St. Petersburg, Russia.

First Post & Last Day at St. Petersburg

If everybody thought that Nengkoy Blog is done, dead and finish, I also thought it was.  But lo and behold! I am still here to plunk excesses in the blogosphere and exploit lots and lots of waste of internet space!

I may have suspended my blogging activity but my world travel continues.  Let me then post a Youtube slideshow video of my last day in amazing St. Petersburg, Russia!

Trip to St. Petersburg was one unforgettable journey.  Expect posts in the coming days about this adventure.

Enjoying the Garden City of Singapore

In each of the time that I visited Singapore in the past, going to the famous and tourist-infested Night Zafari has always been part of the itinerary. And in each time of such visit, this planned route never transpired and took place.

Maybe it is because I am not a fan and not fond of visiting animals in cages. Maybe it has dawned in me somewhere in my nutty unconscious that I really don’t enjoy seeing animals in asylums. Maybe for me, the experience of going to a zoo is like witnessing fauna as refugees. Yeah, I have been fascinated and been to lots of natural history museums around the planet that feature primates and other zoological beings but these I presumed died prior to being preserved or taxidermy-ied.

In my most recent visit to captivating Singapore with Nengkoy and few members of my family, I again failed to visit the Night Zafari (I really don’t know if such a place still runs and exists). And ironically, my foremost reason why I wanted to visit Singapura this time was because I wanted to see not the animals but the P.L.A.N.T.S!

something to marvel about! look at how small those people above!

don’t go chasing waterfalls… 🙂

magnificent dome!

pleasant!

Gardens By The Bay is a 100-hectare botanical garden located right in the heart of the city. It is so huge, we basically stayed in the area to marvel about the beauty of the plant kingdom the whole day yet still (and of course) failed to see and smell the entire nature park. Something awesome about this place is that it is so fresh and modern-day. I guess ultra-modern people of the planet now no longer wants to see creatures of the animal kingdom inside a cage!

I never had appreciated plants this way before! The eco-domes called Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest were like fantastic paradises on earth! Getting around the area was so pleasant. The best part is that there is no guilt feelings building up inside your inner being because there is no person or animal that has been hurt during such a fun and marvelous experience.

Good thing I failed to bring a bowl and a salad dressing during our visit, otherwise, I would have made a scrumptious green & blossom salad out of those plants!

lovely!

Remarkable Fairmont Singapore

While renewing my membership with Accor for another year, I remember that I have yet to blog about the last hotel I stayed at using my Accor membership.  Let me then feature Fairmont Singapore!

Located at the upscale Raffles City complex, Fairmont is so luxuriously impressive.  And like what its website states, “there is no better way to enjoy Singapore than to stay in the heart of it all”.  Location, service and comfort are the three major considerations on my recent trip to Singapore.  Reason behind it is because I am with Nengkoy who at her old age (yet still travels) requires impeccable attention and assistance.

super nice!

luxurious!

super comfy!

nengkoy…

Everything went so well during our stay in Fairmont.  We arrived early in the hotel yet the check-in was quick, friendly and efficient.  The room was really fantastic and its amenities were remarkable!  I particularly love the Le Labo Rose 31 perfume body lotion as well as the soothing bar soap.  The bed was so soft and comfy I actually miss it now.  And by the way, the Nespresso machine inside the room was really a big plus!

The room is huge yet stylish and classy!  We enjoyed and loved everything in Fairmont.  And during our short Singapore stint, we would actually want to go back early to our appointed room after some short sight-seeing adventures of the city so that we can further enjoy the comforts of Fairmont.

Fairmont Singapore is indeed highly recommended!  I love it!

Nag-mamayaman ako dito!

Impressive Singapore

Except for airport layovers for a couple of times, the last time I was in Singapore was more than five (5) years ago. I never had the wanting of getting back because I thought the Singapore I saw was already at its peak in terms of beauty and modernity. I thought that Singapore was so progressive that it can no longer move upward. It seems then that it has nothing to go but down!

beautiful…

gardens by the bay…

magnificent view at night

But my recent visit to the city state with Nengkoy proved me wrong! It is even more beautiful, more modernized and more progressive! This place on earth even made me so sad and so envious for my poor and lagging-so-behind country. I am so surprised and flabbergasted by the astounding features of this modern country that I even went beyond appreciating it. I was so positively impressed that I was literally already uttering something negative like “I-so-hate-Singapore!” Hahaha!

me at chijmes… old yet look so new…

Now, I wonder how Singapore would be like five or ten years from now…
Pucha! Ang ganda talaga! Pinas! Anyare?

Nengkoy: The Unstoppable Traveler

I am old.  But when I grow very old I wanna be just like Nengkoy.  Now at her eighties, Nengkoy can still afford to travel the globe.  Though there are quite a number of things now to consider when she goes out of the country – load of medicines to bring, permit not to undergo x-ray due to her pacemaker, wheelchair access, facilities and services that needs to be coordinated and a lot lot more – Nengkoy still is unstoppable.

Let me post the latest photo of Nengkoy which was taken from her very recent Singapore weekend adventure.

Ibis Styles Singapore on Macpherson

Me and my sisters had a surprise long-weekend getaway for Nengkoy (my mother).  We went to Passion Made Possible, Singapore!  We unfortunately had a red-eye flight that requires us to arrive in Singapore around 1:00 AM.  Considering that it would only be for a short period of time until we check-in in our chosen hotel and me being an Accor member, we prompted to have our first night in an Accor budget hotel.  We decided to head to Ibis Styles Singapore on Macpherson.

usual ibis-style kind of a hotel hallway…

simple yet functional…

super nice… super clean… super comfy…

Our decision to stay at Ibis Styles at Macpherson area of the City State was a surprisingly pleasant experience.  Present Macpherson is like the city center of Singapore ten or fifteen years ago.  With the fast paced development in this part of the planet, I will not be surprised that after another 10 years, the seem-to-be suburb Macpherson section will be like what the city center now.

comfort indeed!

love the orange color…

our room number 2…

This Ibis Hotel branch in this part of commuter-belt-Singapore was exuding with fineness.  The room was surprisingly big for an Ibis-type of a room.  Its impeccable cleanliness, unsullied orderliness and warm service merits above average distinction.  Moreover, considering the bargain price of their rooms, the complimentary buffet breakfast is more than what I and Nengkoy would consider simple.

I have always been a fan of the Ibis hotels’ modern, minimalist and contemporary colors and designs!  Ibis Styles Singapore on Macpherson made my fondness towards Ibis to simply linger on.

Simple pero nays!
